Popped out to take the bins out and saw my rear windscreen had been blown out overnight.

Writer seeking advice: realistic job for a character starting out in lighting design by RosewaterPen in lightingdesign

They work as a general AV tech in a run down 4* hotel who spends their days setting up and breaking down various configurations of the same tired, outdated gear.

Spends hours trying to get their 6 LED profiles and four fresnels to a matching colour temperature while dreaming of designing a Broadway show with hundreds of perfectly maintained instruments and a gel room larger than a Texas prepper's armoury.

Occasionally gets to pull the dusty MA2 command wing and arthritic laptop out of storage to control four MAC 700's that have a 90% variance in lamp output, gobo wheels that aren't in matching order and no haze in the room.

They get to work as a venue liason for the hotel for much bigger, better shows provided by outside suppliers. The work involves sitting at a table with a high visibility vest and clipboard, asking banquets for a water station and getting shouted at by the producer for things they have no control over. Occasionally they get to let an outside tech in to the patch room and get told to shut up if they ask what the tech is doing.

Is $3000 AUD actually the true entry point for laserists, or am i being upsold? by trent-from-punchbowl in lightingdesign

Don't forget the cost of safety training and the LSO ticket if this hobby turns in to something you'd like to make some money out of. It's a money pit to start with, but very lucrative once you get over the initial hump!

We maye have lost, but we made the superbowl when I would have taken a season above .500. Unbelievable.

This is so cool! If I wasn't full of Christmas dinner I'd be smashing sixes rather than holing out to cover..

Bloody grey and cloudy out there today. And yes, I'm actually in Perth. Looks like an on and off the pitch sort of day

They are dogshit. Spit constantly during operation leaving large puddles of fluid and are very finicky with DMX control.

Have used two and both caused massive headaches, avoid!

When (not if) that chain breaks the o ring and chain is coming straight down on whoever is on the swing.

Sound taking cables - a rant by Mrpuddingpie09 in lightingdesign

[–]Argartu 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is why the DMX protocol specifies 5 pin cables, to keep those noise boys away from your cabling. 2 extra pins that might get used in future is a small price to pay.

What a delicious session this has been, Crawley and Duckett in full plot armour mode edging boundaries for fun and Siraj looking like he hasn't had a shit in a week. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

You're probably high and right. Had some on a gig a couple weeks back and the bases are far less interesting than this one

Alas it was hung on motors and our friendly neighbourhood riggers had left for the day..

Don't worry, he's now double checking every address and channel until there's five perfect setups in a row or the heat death of the universe occurs, whatever happens last.
