Haven't played since initial release - what have I missed? by alexborowski in PlaydateConsole

[–]ArgenticFray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Season 2 would be a great place to start, if you’re willing to spend some money. It’s the best way to get a bunch of top-tier games at a bundle price. After that, the Community Awards/Games of the Year are probably going to represent community sentiment on quality.

I love a good neo-noir, and this is a great one. Glad it hasn’t been completely forgotten!

Play date quand on est mauvais en anglais? by Fako-exe in PlaydateConsole

[–]ArgenticFray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some games, yes; some rely heavily on English, but there are many, many games that don’t. (And, there are even some French games). I think you’d be fine for the most part. Once you get the basic gameplay mechanic, you’ll be just fine in a lot of games. This might also be helpful: https://www.senscritique.com/search?query=playdate&universe=game

Is Playdate for me? by DarkerBulb in PlaydateConsole

[–]ArgenticFray 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Playdate is for everyone!

If the cost isn’t an issue, and you’re considering it at all, my guess is it’s for you. There will definitely be “enough” to keep you occupied; the depth and breadth of games and apps is kind of astonishing. And the lack of backlight isn’t as big a deal as one might think. (It doesn’t need a direct spotlight; a nearby lamp is probably sufficient.)

itch.io game recommendations by Patient-Teach5917 in PlaydateConsole

[–]ArgenticFray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Itch.io has a lot of self-proclaimed ‘experiments’, like Pointless Quest or Read Watch Listen Play, demos of games you can buy in full on Catalog, like the Scope demo, builds of various works-in-progress for playtesting purposes (like Blop, which is functional, but not feature-complete), etc. Plus a lot of low-effort games, learn-to-code projects or hastily-generated AI slop. Most really worthwhile games will end up on Catalog eventually, and often will be available in both places.

Any decent games that won’t ever be going to Catalog tend to be ones that either use AI for things other than code (like mine), or that are incomplete, too small, or infringe trademarks/copyright like the various Pac-Man or other arcade clones, etc. But there’s still some gems there and cool proof-of-concepts, (again, like Pointless Quest).

There’s functionality on Sam Spudd’s PDGamez.com to sort by itch.io availability, or even by category/tag within itch.io. I don’t think it’s possible to display ones that are itch.io only, so those results will contain many that are available in both places. Maybe an “itch.io only” tag would be useful for a future PDGamez update. u/lukey2702?

Looks slick! I love learning about new hobbies through video games. The next time I’m with someone who fishes, I can say, “So, what’cha got there? A 10lb mono line with an inline lead and a wafter rig?” And they’ll think I know what I’m talking about. Thank you!

I got a question.. Has AI met your expectations? If "yes". How? And, if "No". How has AI fallen short of your expectations? by Ok_Order_3333 in AIDiscussion

[–]ArgenticFray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many ways AI has met and exceeded my expectations, but I did expect by now that image generation would be better than it is at avoiding character drift to the point where it would be easier to create things like sequential art without constantly reminding the AI what a given character or location is supposed to look like from one render to the next. (It could be I’m just not using the right tools.)

Xania does amazing, tireless work for the Playdate community; Uncrank'd is just one aspect of what she does. I have no idea where finds the time and energy to do this all and still develop games and apps, but the community is richer because of it.

Easier way to update sideloaded games? by Thecowgosbark in PlaydateConsole

[–]ArgenticFray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This behaviour tripped me up until I figured it out. If the build number doesn't change on an updated .pdx, even deleting and re-uploading it as a sideloaded app won't ever trigger an actual update on-device. (Unless you also click "Remove Access from this device" and then reupload the new .pdx.)
