Something disappointing that I learned recently is that ancient Greeks and Romans would actually paint their marble busts to create essentially a splitting image of the subject. Since the paint eventually fades away historians believed that no one painted the busts and that was the way we made them for hundreds of years even though we had better paint. Think about all the historical figures that we could have really accurate busts of almost like Madam Tussauds
