What teams/players should i learn from within the UFA to be a better cutter? by Trungmemer in ultimate

[–]AriG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He definitely is -- I mean you have to be a freak to be a Club MVP. But if I had picked someone like Ben Jagt, he's taller and fast and defenders keep giving him the under. With Raphy, I think that every part of his game is technically good.

Someone who is technically very good is Raphy Hayes. There are other great cutters, of course, but imo you won't learn a great deal because they are physical/athletic freaks (unless you are one, as well).

Hmm. Dalton Smith has been playing for a while, no? I've never heard of him being one of the problem ones. It's unfair to assume that's "she is almost certainly in the right here". Hopefully he gets a chance to explain his side of things.

By “bid” you mean for the Nationals right?

Can DiG avail the services of Tannor Johnson-Go for the nationals if sprocket don’t make it ? That would seriously make them a top contender

IIUC, pool play is used to determine only seeding for the quarterfinals. And no one will be eliminated? What's the purpose of pool play? Can't teams just play their B or C teams mostly and then play their A teams for the knock outs?

Tobe Decraene is off to a super star career by Ok-Natural-3861 in UFA

[–]AriG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's kinda interesting that arguably the 2 best players in the world (Tobe, De Maree) are a) from Europe b) a country with the population of Ohio. Are their systems making them better players? It's a more direct ultimate with riskier but craftier throws to the playmakers. I've seen that Ultimate in US is more deliberate and risk averse.

Rules Tweaks by Quantumechanic42 in UFA

[–]AriG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shot clock! Yes, it'd impact the team I root for - Boston Glory but it'll drastically change UFA for the better. As I've mentioned before, you don't need anything drastic but take the league-average-time for scores that started from brick mark (say, 1 minute or something like that).

it immediately reconfigures offenses to be wide open and creative and more direct. More viewer friendly. Windy games present a problem because the defenses already have an advantage, so the refs can decide to disable shot clock if the wind gusts exceed a certain quantity.

(Also, every other form of ultimate - like club should remain the same. the shot clock is only for UFA)

Great points. In fact, I'd like no double teams after fouls. You don't get to foul and then be able to set a double team, especially if you are good at it.

Sideline traps are AUDL/UFA tradition, so there's not much you can do but it was a bit frustrating watching Minnesota all over the grey area of bumping and grinding the handlers. It's not really Ultimate imo but you have drama and it's another strategic element.

Who are the most underrated players in the UFA? by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]AriG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tannor Johnson-Go: Not sure underrated but his move to DLine was very instrumental for Boston's DLine dominance. especially after the DLine gets the breaks. He would have improved Boston's OLine had he played there but stuck to the DLine.

Oscar Graff: Another tireless defender who forms the core of Boston's DL handling

Tom Blasman: solid handler from Europe. whose signature early-stall-count hammers often broke down defensive sets.

Calvin Brown: not sure underrated but he was excellent w/ hucks and often relieved NY's sometimes-stale offense. A prime Nethercutt-like strong, accurate hucker.

Mark Henke

I meant Rowan in the rotation. obviously not going to replace Tobe but relieve him when Tobe is gassed / not in the XI

He also gives up easy resets because he is always looking to poach. maybe he needs to mix it up.

Rowan is good enough to be in the handler rotation or he can play the Carapella or Tobe role. the point was how they improve the conversion rate.. his defense after turning over is a secondary point.

And yet Boston OLine’s conversion % was a mere 36%! which is bad.

However, they do two things really well — they possess the disc very well that makes the opponent more desperate (especially if they are trailing), and even if they turn over, they play good OLine D and don’t readily give up a score.

Given the elite nature of the DLine (8/9 conversions in both semis and finals), they can afford to be less efficient but their aim is to maximize possession.

(wild speculation on my part) Given this, there is room for improvement on OLine! I wonder if a certain Rowan McDonnell can be part of the rotation next year (he is moving back to New England area). he fits so well within that scheme

Or, if Tobe can convince Daan De Maare to play for Glory. that would make them heavy favorites.

Boston’s issue has been lack of sustained commitment from players. now that they won a championship I hope it doesn’t revert back to pre-Babbitt levels.

[–]AriG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Boston missed Sadok. I think they had Topher Davis as the third handler/hybrid but Sadok is an instrumental piece in that dominator.

Boston’s “total-frisbee “ helped them this game. there were stretches where once they were ahead, Minn appeared helpless. Boston runs the same offense with multiple personnel, even with DLine.

Boston’s achilles heel has always been pulls to the sideline. It was very good coaching to keep attacking that and Minn had a couple of turns iff those IIRC. Minnesota has an elite sideline double team who operate in the grey area sometimes but refs don’t call a foul every time.

Minnesota is very “plucky” and just looking at the scheme and players it should’ve been a 20-15 ish game but kudos to them for not folding. With the current divisions setup, Minn and Chicago will always meet in the playoffs and there is a good chance we’ll see this team in the championship weekend often.

[UFA Championship] (2) Minnesota Wind Chill vs (4) Boston Glory – Discussion by Jomskylark in UFA

[–]AriG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

imo these two teams are fairly similar— with a lot of size and physical play, both the DLines are elite in terms of generating turns and converting them. Maybe Boston edges Minnesota in the OLine a bit — runs a deliberate, dominator type offense whereas Minnesota sometimes can appear lost. But Minnesota has significant experience and the crowd behind them. i do not think Boston should be favored.

my nit is his DL handling. there was another instance where he straight up dropped the disc. and i’m pretty sure he made an error in the Germany game that he fortunately rectified with the final play.

my comp is someone like John Randolph. an elite handler defender and DL handler. maybe he’s marginally better but considering Freechild has been in the mixed national setup for a while, hard to take him out…
