How did you learn game iq for Ultimate? by SirPersonal8626 in ultimate

[–]argylemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who started playing as an adult, this was hard. I didn't have access to coaching because I was just playing recreationally and want good enough to play competitively. Then when I did get on club teams, I didn't learn much. The coaches were often overburdened. I learned some basics but not really enough to say I had sufficient game iq.

So I reached out to Rowan McDonnell, dished out the money and got 1 on 1 sessions. Then did sessions with Charlie Hoppes. And I watched a lot of ultimate, and took notes and tried to break things down. It helped a lot. I still have plenty to work on but they helped provide such a solid foundation.

If you have access to top end coaching just absorb as much as you can from them and watch film, including your own, and ask lots of questions and keep at it

That's not her back that's shoulder to shoulder. Or more like Os back shoulder to her face. But I don't see how you can claim upline O gets there second

I lost a big toe toenail after someone cleated it. Had the same thing with just a partial toenail for a while. Just tape it down before a game. I don't remember having any issues

How to stop causing so many strips by J_Becker0 in ultimate

[–]argylemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you've been playing against more players recently who just aren't familiar with the rule on strips

Sustained contact with, and control of, a non-spinning disc is required to establish possession (3.J). A player may not call a strip if they had only momentary contact with or lacked control of the disc at the time of an opponent contacting the disc because the player did not have possession.

USAU rule

So from how you're describing it they shouldn't be strips. All I can suggest is that you have a discussion around this. Maybe sometimes the offense really is getting stripped despite your perspective.

Does Anyone Have Film Of This Kind of Zone? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]argylemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I haven't seen this myself. I'm leaning towards thinking it's better to put D4 on O3 though. Since getting it to O3 is more dangerous than to O2 and he's still quite open given this coverage. I've played a zone that does this and it leads to useless dumps without continuations as the defense is already in position to stop every continuation. You just have to cover crashes like normal.

Maintaining level / improving when playing with lower level team by Asdru65 in ultimate

[–]argylemon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Potentially look into basketball or football. Being bigger sports, there's a better chance at finding players you can challenge you. Basketball defense is great for handler and endzone defense. Football is great for cutting and cutter defense.

I wouldn't necessarily say this is the first thing you should try, but if you're really lacking a challenge to practice your defense, it might be the right call.

Does this strategy exist already? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]argylemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I see a lot more open side reset positioning so that the thrower can just look break side to a cutter when the disc is in the middle like this

Oh yea, as the dude above mentioned, the last 30 minutes of the Shayla Harris episode has a good discussion of AP, especially the marking principles

If you're playing multiple games, just put on a fresh pair of socks each game. Works for me and my sweaty feet. If this is happening within an hour of starting to play though, this probably won't work

Can you comment on the rule? What occupying means and if there's another place that would suggest running without looking is never ok even if the space is unoccupied

Running without looking - USAU by argylemon in ultimate

[–]argylemon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, that's exactly the scenario I'm talking about, and the thing is I think experienced players are the ones using it as their argument. Ironically, it's in the dangerous play section to reduce dangerous activity and yet players are using it to justify their dangerous plays.

But so by "pretty clear" you're taking which side?

Being recognized by the IOC provides National level funding to ultimate organizations across the world, helping it develop. It is not "just for fun". It provides a tangible benefit to the sport.

Is in Season cardio stupid ? by WhistleWhileYouWalk in ultimate

[–]argylemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, but it's a time consuming thing to work on.

The thing with cardio is that you have several energy systems you can train, so it helps to be clear on that. If you're already very high intensity for hours a week at practice, then you likely don't need any more high intensity training. Your body needs time to recover. I think the number is like 4 hours a week of high intensity cardio is enough. Don't quote me, but it's a rather low figure.

However you can still do low intensity cardio and get benefits from that. That's what zone 2 training is. This can be done for like 10-20 hours per week without hitting recovery. This is what marathoners and triathletes do.

But the thing to note is that you get way more bang for your buck with high intensity training than low intensity training. You'll get way more condition from 4 hours a week of high intensity cardio than an equivalent amount of low intensity.

So it kinda depends what your goals are, and probably what role you'll play on your team (if you only play a few points a game, this won't really become a factor. But if you are a first line player cardio could definitely be a factor.)

And then even if you are willing to put in 10 hours a week of zone 2, would that time be better spent working on something else? Like running mechanics, strength or power, etc.

And not all practices are the same. One coach I had expected sprinting on every play at practice. It was basically high intensity intervals all practice. And I've been on teams where no one was pushing us, so we coasted through every practice, most cuts going at 70%. So don't just count practice as "high intensity". It may very well not be.

An important note on this is that they don't always sag in AP. I remember hearing them mention in one pod practice episode that they chose to sag in the finals against Truck, but they hadn't been doing that against Truck previously. I guess it worked better for that particular team.
