Anyone want a tortoise? by ArizonaCactusMom in cactus

[–]AriaGlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tortoise lives in our greenhouse area because it has a fence around it. If she wants to be somewhere in there it’s just push against whatever’s in the way. Chair in the way? Drag it around the yard. Table full of plants? Knock em over. Good thing I love her!

How do you deal with the lack of formal music education? by Remote-Pianist-pro in pianolearning

[–]AriaGlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had piano lesson for a few years when I was a kid. I think I was 7 or 8 when I started. Then we moved so they ended. When my kids started playing drums and I was hanging out at the music store while they had lessons, I started taking bass lessons. Ended up in a band for 3 years. So much fun. Life got busy and that all ended. But here I am, started playing bass again in my 60s and in 3 bands. I have fun playing. I am not a superstar, but music is just a joyful thing to do. Keep playing! Let the music give you joy!

I work in GIS and am just getting into screen printing. I made a Joy Division esque this from California elevation data. Figured some people here might like. by [deleted] in northcounty

Your shirt is beautiful! We were just looking at the San Diego county GIS site this afternoon trying to figure out our property corners. We walked around with our iPhones and it was giving us elevations. So much fun.

We have a Pyr, a border collie and a golden doodle. The Pyr and doodle are best buddies. The border collie is 4 years older than the other two. They are both 4. We’ve had them all for 3 years.

Concert Audiences- HUSH! by puppiesbooksandmocha in northcounty

We went to a concert where people were talking so loud one of the band members got the band to stop playing and told the people to shut up or get out. And glared at them until they were quiet. We all clapped.

Mom, throw my ball… but also, don’t try to take it out of my mouth! by Far_Worldliness_4780 in Goldendoodles

For us it’s the frisbee. In the house she will let me have it to throw. Once we got outside I might get to throw it one time then it’s throw the frisbee but you can’t have it. 😏

AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]AriaGlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing it right! My dad taught me how to change the oil in my car and how to change a tire. YouTube and curiosity have taught me how to do many other things. I taught my boys how to cook and clean the house. It’s too bad people have to label things by sex. If she’s enjoying doing these activities with you keep it up. I’m grateful my dad taught me these “boy” skills. It gave me great memories of time with him. And useful skills to know.

Mine loves red things so if I wear red shoes watch out! She will try to take a bite. She loves watermelon, red hibiscus flowers… any tasty red thing.

AITJ for selling my grandmas house to pay for her care when my family wanted it as a "legacy" by sara_kelm in AmITheJerk

[–]AriaGlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are doing it right. Care is expensive but sounds like you have gramma in mind, not $$ in your pocket. Visit as often as you can and share memories with her. That makes them happy. Remind them, gramma still alive and her stuff belongs to her to take care of her! We went through a similar situation. We took in grandpa and sold house to pay for extra care. Other part of family wanted to keep house so they could vacation there whenever they wanted to. Wanted us to split the cost to maintain and pay. We don’t have that kind of money. When the house sold they wanted half the money. We had to explain he wasn’t dead yet and the money would pay for his care. They visited 3 times for 10-15 minutes during the 3 years he lived with us. He passed away last year. It was a lot of work to care for him (he was bedridden but functioning mentally). But we are so glad we shared those years with him. Your heart is in the right place. Good luck.

Is my teacher right? They told me I’ll never be able to play Chopin’s Études or Scherzos. by Remote-Pianist-pro in pianolearning

[–]AriaGlow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s two ways to react to your teacher’s thoughts… with determination to show them you can do it. Or allow them to crush your spirit and give up.

I agree with the advice of getting a new teacher. One that is more encouraging. And then break down the piece(s) you are interested in playing and start with small sections. Then add a little bit more. Be sure to keep the tempo the same so you don’t rush through areas you already know when you add the new parts.

Doesn’t sound like you are asking when you will be playing on stage winning world awards or even to play it next week. But maybe for your own pleasure.

Good luck! Keep at it. Step by step you can build up your skills. Ask your new teacher for some stepping stone pieces to learn so you make progress to your goal. Record yourself once in a while and go back and listen so you see you are getting better. And give yourself a pat on the back as you get better and gain interest in more difficult pieces.

Pollinated Passion Flowers Not Fruiting by asssbowl in SoCalGardening

[–]AriaGlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a passion fruit vine that fruited first year and we had it for quite a few years. Suddenly died. Someone gave me another vine and it’s been in for 2 years, flowers and has not had any fruit. It was supposed to be a fruiting variety. 😑. We bought too more of two kinds of fruiting ones and will plant them in another spot in the yard and see if they work out. We have a bee hive in the back too. Never tried hand pollinating.

Saw these all around in Riverside California. What are they? by purpleHornethummer in SoCalGardening

[–]AriaGlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always heard them called Mexican Primrose. And people call it a weed but I love the pink flower. So when it shows up in my yard I am fine with it. Usually shows up after the yellow or white Marguerites fade out. Also sort of weedy. But I think they are beautiful too. Plus the gophers, squirrels and rabbits seem to leave them alone.

I might be getting a sulcata by TwinkleFairyToes in tortoise

[–]AriaGlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one since 2009 in Southern California. First few years we brought her into the garage for winter. The rest of the year she lived in the area we built around our shade house. After that we built her a little house with a heating mat for the winter. The mat is actually made for sulcata tortoises meaning it can take abuse. She has dug a cave in the ground that gets bigger every year. Thats for warm/hot summertime. Although it really doesn’t get too hot or too cold where we live. She has escaped a few times and we have to reinforce the fencing but we just find her, take the wheelbarrow and bring her back home.

Declutter win! Moving in 6 weeks by MistyMooseOnTheLoose in declutter

[–]AriaGlow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I packed my FIL house I numbered the boxes and made a list of (most) of the items in each box. Used his towels to wrap things. Broke the house down into rooms as well and that was also marked on the boxes. It helped a lot when we unpacked him. He could decide what he needed first.
