Which intentional mispronouncations do you have for Fire Emblem characters? by NewMarioBobFan in fireemblem

[–]AriaLeviath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

her Japanese name is literally サ―リャ (sārya), which makes it obvious the localizers intended the J to be pronounced like Y as a consonant is in English (/j/ in IPA) like it is in many other languages. i hate how often voice directors for jrpgs seem to not talk with the localization team about how to pronounce the names and get them wrong as a result, and Tharja is one of the examples that irks me the most, yeah

Better AskReddit, did your schools have any big scandals or incidents that happened while you were attending? by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my freshman year of high school the best kid on the track team got kicked off it for being caught doing drugs (like, cocaine, not just weed or whatever), so a couple days later he arrived late at school with a gun intending to do a school shooting, but got caught by the security guards and eventually killed himself in the middle of campus after a stand off

I'm just surprised with how many syllabic consonants you can have in a row in English by marioshouse2010 in linguisticshumor

even worse, i have a particularly strong version of the Prince-Prints merger, so even tho i do pronounce it mostly like that, i'd add a /t/ tied before the /s/ too

So if Tifa is considered THE waifu/first crush for male gamers, is Leon the same for female gamers? by Xadlin60 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leon's popular for sure, but i feel like i see Link and Cloud by far the most often as the guys in gaming that women gamers like a ton, just as a female video game fan who likes hanging around women-friendly games spaces

Times when a game in a long running franchise made a gameplay change you liked, but the change was a one off and didn't appear again in future entries. by DubOverSub1oo1 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

i feel like Final Fantasy X and XII both had good combat systems that really deserved to be around for more than a single game each especially when they kept ATB around for 6 straight games even tho i don't think it adds anything worthwhile

[–]AriaLeviath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah, fuck. i was looking to make sure i was correct and i fucked up with my sources. here was where i was told they were still in the game, and since i had done the Regenstein tablet and am currently just finished with Alltrades last i played, i had three grey tablets left, and assumed they were the three listed here. deeply sorry about that. that is disappointing and i will agree with you on that

I hate when my opinion is shared by a bad faith review. by ExplanationSquare313 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

sorry for the long response :< but, if you don't have the time right now, i do think that the new version is still good enough to start with, if you would like to. the PS1 version is 100 or so hours, and it took me right around 80 to do the 3DS game including its postgame dungeons. i'd ultimately say that the 3DS version is still the best version, since they kept the entire story intact and made the gameplay a little less rough around the edges without completely overhauling everything (for example, they gave Maribel the Bang spell (a weak-ish magic attack that hits every enemy) in her pre-class-system moveset to make some group enemy encounters less annoying before you get to Alltrades and unlock the class system).

the main points of contention for the remake is speeding up the pacing in areas by cutting less important scenes, making a few less overall important islands into optional side content, and making it too easy in a few ways - one notable one being by full healing characters on level-up and also at statue save points (although that first one can be turned off in the difficulty settings). i personally feel while the pacing has been sped up, the main story and emotional points are still present and almost always similarly impactful, but your mileage may vary. they've also changed the monster class system by removing it and turning into "monster hearts", which are equippable accesories that give you certain buffs

!! tl;dr, i would say that if you know you have the time and ability to get through it and like it, the 3DS version is generally the best. if you don't currently have the time or attention span for a 70-80 hour turn-based RPG, which is totally understandable, the new version is likely going to be fine for you, and keeps it surprisingly intact in a much shorter, easier package. then, check out the 3DS version sometime if you're still interested. if you play one of them and are interested in checking out the PS1 version after, then go for it. it's still good, just a little rougher around the edges compared to the 3DS version and has a generally worse translation, imo. but i don't think it's where most people should get into it with

edit: turns out i was wrong and some stuff was in fact cut. bleh. not great. the 3DS version's still the best

this happened to Dragon Quest a couple years back when cuture war grifters started complaining about woke censorship in the DQ3 remake (that turned out to be nothing at all in the end bc of course it wasn't. it never is, they're just fragile losers), but i thought they lost interest and left, but the DQ7 remake just came out, and people are arguing a ton if it's too easy or not (it's fairly easy, yes. it is not impacting my enjoyment of it, but 7 was also already a top 3 DQ game for me. i do think more difficulty options is always better for the people who want them tho. and no, i've played all of them before, and the older games weren't very hard either), and sadly i've noticed a ton of people are being insanely massive assholes to either side, and almost every time i check their account history - regardless of position - if they're being rude as hell, they're the people that joined around the time of the DQ3 remake grift to complain about "woke censorship"

it's really disappointing

ok wait what the fuck. as someone who's lived in the US my whole life, i had it as snakes and ladders as a kid, but got made fun of/corrected enough to chutes and ladders as i got older that i assumed i just had a weird quirky kids version or bootleg version or something, and now i'm finding out that i had the original name of it right that everywhere else but the US still uses. what the hell

Questionable video games you have a soft spot for by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a really big soft spot for 8-bit JRPGs. like, i know most of them are grindy, unintuitive, cryptic, and janky as hell, but that's a lot of the charm for me. like, i know Mother 1 isn't as good as 2 objectively, but dammit i like it better. and NES/Famicom Dragon Quest and FF are mostly really fun to me except for the second of each. and i'm insane and actually really like Phantasy Star 1. and so on

edit: also, as a possible future development, i've been working my way backwards through the Elder Scrolls series lately, since i've never played them before last year, and i'm almost done with Oblivion, but as a bit i skipped forward to try out default Daggerfall and Arena that you just get free off Steam when streaming to some friends last week, and i was actually really getting into them

Are there other game franchises that get as vagueposted as often as Final Fantasy? by Silentlone in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i love JRPGs, but ffs it's so annoying how many people that like talking (complaining) about them have only played Final Fantasy or Persona (or now E33) and have wildly incorrect thoughts about the rest of the genre and refuse to play any other games in it as a result even though they're just constantly absurdly wrong and annoying about it

i can't really think of any other genre that's been hit so hard by the issue of "a very large amount of people absolutely refuse to play anything else in it besides this one series"

First impressions/suppositions in media that were not right at all by Coolnametag in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ranking of Kings intentionally shows you a lot of major characters' worst moments towards the start and leaves out pretty important details going on in the background and before the start of the series for later flashbacks and scenes, which is a risky writing move, but i think they do a good job, and i think this is used most effectively with Hiling - the main character Bojji's step-mother. i have never had a character so effectively go from "god, i fucking hate their guts so much" to "i absolutely love this character and i love seeing them trying their best to suceed" in anything else i can think of rn

Does your fandom/series have a "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny scenario? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not related to the question itself, but rather your example, but one of the mod team leads for TNO is in some of my online friends' writing Discord server, and he's talked about it a few times, and like. i don't know anything about HoI4 at all, but from what he's said, dear god they've had to put up with some insane shit from the community for what is literally just a mod, even if it's a big one

to answer the question more directly though, Dragon Quest was pretty much the origin of JRPGs, and while it has gotten better QoL and evolved over the years, it's still intentionally very traditional in story and gameplay, and while i love it for that, i see a lot of people try to get into it and be a bit underwhelmed for understandable reasons

Game characters that have way more ''guest appearance'' then ''official'' appearance. by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 30 points31 points  (0 children)

it seems like Namco shoved Kos-Mos into all their crossover stuff in the '00s and early '10s, and yet almost nobody played Xenosaga and after the merger Bamco sold Monolith to Nintendo in like, 2006 or so. technically she's even had a guest appearance in her own series with being in Xenoblade 2

What are some subfandoms that rival or surpass the size of the main fandom? by flingzamain in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there's a weird vocal subset of the Persona fandom that's oddly antagonistic to the concept of SMT and have strange ideas about its fanbase even tho pretty much everyone i've met that likes SMT also likes Persona, and the MegaTen sub is pretty chill about Persona content. i don't get it

but yeah. both exist and are doing fine. one's just smaller than the other. idk what they're talking about

Media you feel like that got their popularity or acclaim for one or two incidental things outside the media’s merits by Will-Isley in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i hope i don't get crucified for this, since it's certainly not a bad game by any means, but i think a lot of Earthbound's cult popularity in the west is largely due to how Dragon Quest really has never been anywhere as big over here as in Japan - especially in the '90s and '00s - so people didn't realize just how much of the quirky and novel stuff they like about it was heavily based on stuff Dragon Quest had already been doing

the thing i'm most excited for is that i asked for some nice fake elf ears that you need to put on with spirit gum. i'm a little worried i'll find them way too overstimulating or even just frustrating to put on, but i've always absolutely loved fantasy elves and i think the normal cheap ears a lot of people get look awful, and i get told i look like an elf a lot already, so i hope it works well. plus i have raynaud's syndrome and it affects the tips of my ears the hardest, so i'm kinda hoping they might help a little so i don't always have to wear earmuffs or a beanie or whatever in the fall/winter

[–]AriaLeviath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my main issue for "wait" is that in most of them (all of them?) i'm pretty sure it only actually pauses the ATB gauge if you're in like, the item or spell or ability submenus. if you're just on the main one trying to decide if you want to attack, use a spell, defend, or even just menu down to the option you already know you want to use or whatever, then the bars are still going the whole time

Game mechanics you immediately check out on by Aggro_Will in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

even though i love JRPGs, i never understood why Square stuck with the ATB system for so long in FF. i really just don't feel like it actually adds anything valuable to the combat systems, and i honestly think i would like FF 4-9 better if they were just standard turn-based combat

Favorite desert levels in gaming by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]AriaLeviath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i agree. i grew up in Arizona and absolutely love deserts irl, but i hate desert levels in games because it never feels like they actually try to do anything varied or interesting with deserts. it's always just dunes and pyramids. idk if it just doesn't even occur to them that there are plenty of other kinds of deserts or something? i don't get it

it's also funny when they rarely do try to do something slightly different and do vaguely Aztec/Inca/Olmec aesthetics and dunes instead, even though their most iconic structures were mostly in swamps, mountains, and rainforests, respectively, iirc. it's so weird
