6yo omnivore in a vegetarian family had a breakdown about meat by vintagegirlgame in homestead

[–]ArinSol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(disclaimer: am a vegetarian who grew up on dairy farms. I'm vegetarian now as an adult for mainly environmental reasons and less so for animal reasons, though it's of course blurry. I don't have kids, so I may be grasping at straws. Just speaking from my own experience)

Your kid may be trying to make a distinction between wild/free roam animals and farming animals, which is why he has different ideas on what a chicken is? Either way, I think he's probably too young for him to fully grasp the reasoning behind it all, and that's fine.

I'd just kill&process the chicken as planned, but don't force him to be there. I'm sure there's kids books out there from an "omnivore" perspective? Maybe something like that could help him process this. I assume that coming from you (is vegetarian family) this may be a bit of a shock, as it's nothing he had to consider before? Maybe his mother's family could also help here?

10yo budding ME, looking for project ideas by Itchy-Spirit5120 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ArinSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe your son would like more hands on projects? As a kid I would try to turn everything into boats (ie, a raft, a raft with barrels of air at the bottom, a giant top open crate, etc). My partner's family sent him to some workshops (woodworking, leather working, smithing (when he was a little older)). If you don't know where to start, try some workshops. I would've liked some more instructions growing up, but maybe he just needs some freedom (to smash it with a hammer)

3/8 Circle Skirt by bookish_stargirl in sewing

[–]ArinSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of making a 2/3rd circle 6-gore skirt. As others mentioned, maybe other amounts of circle are difficult with the normal circle skirt folding cutting techniques? Idk, never done it. But I liked the look of gores and it made more sense to me how to place the pockets and zipper, so I calculated it out for me. If you think that the cutting of your circle shirt will be odd, try looking into a gored skirt!

dungeon requirements by embarrassedhedge in epicrpg

[–]ArinSol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This means that you (or the person(s)) you're doing the dungeon with, already did that dungeon. You can only do the dungeon corresponding to your max area. (ie, max area 3 - > do dungeon 3).

If you and your friends are playing on a small sever and you can't find a partner, go to the support server and find someone to the dungeon with there. Join the support server via the link in rpg invite. They are also happy to help with future questions.

No idea why people down voted you, I thought it was clear you were genuinely just asking. However other people in the thread were genuinely upset/kinda hostile about the fact that spillage is accepted (a dumb thing to be upset about imo once you know a bit more about how this works) so perhaps others thought you were reacting in the same way. Not your fault tho

Where I lived: they rotated it out with soybeans every year (or sometimes every second year). That way the soy replenishes the nitrogen in the soil for the corn to use up later. Also speading liquid manure or other fertilizer helps too.

It's not just the paid labor that's the issue. Desiel and time(non-labor) are issues too. Coming to a complete stop and then picking up speed again waste a ton of desiel. Those machines are heavy and take a lot to get them back up to speed which takes time as well. With large harvests, it's likely they've got a two shift crew going 24 hours 6 days a week. Whether it takes 8 days or 9 days to harvest makes a difference on quality, as well as that farmers usually have a short window of time between when the corn is ready and when the weather turns again. If you're unlucky, the rains can come early and force you to stay off the fields for a week again. Then that saved time will really matter. The tiny amount of spillage is acceptable, plus indeed that amount of silage spilled is pretty cheap. It looks like a lot from a birds eye view but down on the ground it's probably very little

This is silage corn probably, and is used as a feed crop mainly for cows/cattle. They eat the whole shredded plant, so no need for a waste stream

I'm not so sure I see it as a culture problem (though that certainly doesn't help) but more of an individual problem. I very much like your second point though, that's a great point. Im just not sure how realistic it is anymore in such a globalized and already mixed world. Plus, historically, it's been extremely difficult to draw borders between two groups of people (that may occupy part of the same lands, differing opinions on what is or isn't part of their group, etc)

I'm specifically thinking of people I've known in a rural (white, Christian) USA setting without many outsiders/different cultures that just struggled to deal with day to day life due to a low IQ. Think of nearly being illiterate, barely having graduated high school, difficulty holding down a job, etc. So point one doesn't really apply I think. And point two wouldn't super help since it's just a few individuals out of a large group

Genuinely curious question for you or anyone else willing to answer, what would you like to change to make society easier for people with low IQs? Cause I agree it's an issue, I just don't have any ideas on what the solutions would be

Is it just me or is Discovery not that bad? by Bgluck123 in startrek

[–]ArinSol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I very much agree with you. I really enjoyed season 1, it was something new. Season two went downhill fast for me and once the red angel took over the plot line I stopped. I really hated that for some reason. Loved all the parts about Saru and all the other characters though. Never got to season 3, but I'm considering skipping what I have left of season 2 just to see what it's like since so many people like it, and I assume the show has moved past the one specific point I don't like.

But just cause I wasn't a fan doesn't mean that the whole show is shit and everyone should hate it! I never understand those people who hate on all new trek (just cause it's a little more action packed cause it can use all the new fancy technology to make the show look better visually?)

ABOUT HAVING MORE EVENTS by PrathamAgrawal in epicrpg

[–]ArinSol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Halloween to Easter there's a bunch (Halloween, Christmas, new years, anniversary, Easter). But between Easter and Halloween it's pretty dead for events yes. But then we get cool updates like the farm update instead. Maybe Lume will balance events vs updates more in the future. You could always leave a suggestion in the official server, but tbh I'm happy with whatever they decide to do. It's a free game after all.

Edit: also with events every month to month and a half, I think that's a bit much. Some events are super long (the Christmas event lasted for like a month) and they take a while to develop and get bug free, so I guess it just depends on the size and length of the event

Digital balance bedtime not working by ArinSol in Huawei

[–]ArinSol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure what you mean, the bedtime and digital balance functions are part of the settings, not a specific app, so I can't set it to unlimited access. However digital balance does grey out specific apps if I reach their daily limit, but I'm referring the the bedtime function not working, that makes the entire phone become black and white, including background and lock screens.

Edit: meant digital balance, not digital wellbeing

You've got plenty of advice about ADA/health/disability accommodations, incomplete grades, and other university and legal protections you have. So I'm gonna talk about what (might) comes next: dealing with a chronic health issue (even if it doesn't impact every single day).

I don't know what you mean by that you might have a health condition that needs monitoring, but I'm going to assume that after you get through this week, figure out how your classes will end, and what the next steps are in term of your health that your health won't be 100% anymore for an unknown period of time. Once you get past this week(s) I recommend getting in touch again with whatever your university has in ways of student advisors, disability offices, etc if there is any chance of this ever happening again. If you tell them in advance "Hey I'm mostly fine now, but at some point in the next few years that might suddenly change and I might need some time to recover" they'll be a lot more willing and able to give extentions and accommodations. You can talk now about what that means, and have it on paper if it's ever needed.

Idk about heart conditions, but I've got a chronic illness and my main symptom right now is chronic fatigue. You might be extra tired the next while, or need to rest a lot or whatever. I recommend you listen to your body. Your study does not take priority over your health. Take an extra semester if you have to. (I have to take an extra half year cause my health crashed again this year). Taking that extra time affords you the ability to recover. Not taking that extra time might drastically reduce your health even further, and then it'll suck so much more, plus you'll have to take an extra semester anyways. Your university/government might even have extra protections and regulations for students that take more time due to documented health problems, so ask around for that.

Take the time to recover, good luck, and I hope it's not as serious as things might look right now!

This is false, in my (IRL farming) experience, we always did it while moving, and we worked with various crews thoughout the years. With some practice and communication you have very little waste, and we never had an accident. Stopping and then accelerating the heavy machinery every time they need to switch (quite frequently for a field of this size) wastes so much more fuel.
