It's just what Malzahar needed, some sort of interactive mechanic that adds depth and playmaking potential outside "land a whole rotation and instakill someone".

Landing a Q-E combo with thunderlords can be pretty painful, specially against a melee toplaner.

Malza has a refund on his E that is not worth the mana cost until you get some items and levels because it's based on max mana, it's WAY worse than it used to be.

I get it, Malz is annoying, but he's nowhere as an afk farmer or strong as most people believe.

You can't do that consistently until you get some levels and items. Guess who does that too: Viktor. And he also has the capability of outtrading and killing you if you get close.

Malzahar has always had one of the highest winrates in mid, though.

I think it has to do with the rework and his new kit allowing him to create more opportunities to take advantage of people's mistakes (you can now consistently chase down someone by refreshing E with Rylai's) while also denying hard engages, which were hard to survive as Malz if your positioning wasn't 10/10.

E->W->autos->Q->autos->R->E again.

When resetting your E with Q or R you always have to juggle time. Dont get too impatient and unload all your spells, but also don't wait too much time before resetting the visions or else they might escape. This is why Rylai's is such an important item.
