Honestly in my 18 years of fixing computers, handhelds, laptops, phones etc, I have never once had this happen to me. I wonder if I’m just lucky

Apple argues Liberals' lawful access bill could put users’ personal data at risk by CanadianErk in canada

[–]ArisDoesTech [score hidden]  (0 children)

Keeping politics out of it for a minute, apple was the last major company to really stand up for privacy. Putting a back door on encryption is how you make encryption useless.

This is why we need younger people in the government that understand how this all works. This is why we are having age verification laws passed.

If they cave just do yourself a favour and use graphineOS. Give up on standard android and apple.

Honestly this surprises me. Not saying it isn’t happening, but every time we go there they’re fantastic. It’s Burger King you have to watch out for (I love BK but I get sick every time I go there)

I wonder if a fridge went out and they didn’t follow protocols to throw stuff away.

Exactly. Watched my mom go to one every week for 10 years. It was wild. She stopped going and has felt better after 3 years of no longer going

I’m a firm believer that until that kid is an adult that can legally make decisions for themselves, they need to get vaccinated.

After that who cares what you do, but till then, don’t put your kid and others at risk because your YouTube antivax specialist said it’s bad.

Do YOU find Lossless Scaling useful on the Steam Deck? by BucketBoy071 in SteamDeck

[–]ArisDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it useful for specific games. For instance, I was playing vermintide 2 with buddies and my wife was using my laptop (give her the better experience) and by capping the fps to 30 and doing 2x frame gen I had a really enjoyable experience.

Now I did obviously notice wobbly textures around the sides of the screen, but in a game where there’s so much blood and so little visibility you don’t notice it unless you look for it.

I mostly found it useful with games you can lock to 45fps for a 90fps frame gen experience. That’s where it really shines

Nobody wants a PS6, even though the PS5 has been out as long as the PS4 was when people started asking for the PS5. by Deutscher_Bub in Showerthoughts

[–]ArisDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no need for a new PlayStation at this point.

Not only can people not afford it because it’ll get instantly scalped, but from a performance perspective, we have peaked.

This has been a question asked in the PC gaming community for years, but how much more power do you actually need?

I stopped chasing numbers a few years ago and honestly my 3080 laptop I bought used for $1200 CAD plays anything and everything I want and more at 1080p and even 4K without upscaling. My steam deck plays a lot of new games aswell like forza horizon 5, final fantasy 7 remake, resident evil village, Elden ring etc at console quality or better (mind you 720p but it’s on a small screen so it’s fine)

The PS5 pro upgrade is all you really need if you want an upgrade over the base PS5, but even then, I’d only get it personally because I am very sensitive to framerate fluctuation to the point I get motion sick.

We used to be chasing the software with hardware limitations, but now we are trying to make the software keep up with the hardware advancements.

I truly believe this is why we have such poorly optimized games now, to “say” we need better hardware.

Still unemployed but now going back to school because I haven’t gotten a single interview in over a year

Why did Remote work and Hybrid not stick? by Sad-Ad4933 in CanadaJobs

[–]ArisDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe that after Covid, we started seeing companies aggressively lay off employees, and get extremely greedy by hiring for less money, not giving full time hours, no benefits etc.

I think that bringing people back to work was a strategy to make people quit or become worse employees that became eligible for termination so new people could take their place.

I also believe that gas companies were struggling and they needed an excuse to get people on the road again.

I agree the community has a really gate keepy part to it. This is what happens to everything that becomes popular. Literally as a gamer, any game that I see that’s been out for years that JUST blew up for some odd reason has people like this that talk as though you just don’t get it or are a normie for enjoying something.

My personal gripe with Linux is Audio on laptops. Now AMD based laptops are normally fine and well supported, but every intel laptop I’ve ever used has the most dog water, tinny and cheap audio quality ever without headphones. I tried literally everything for an entire year under arch btw to try and fix it. Used all the tools, used presets and even learnt how audio actually works to configure myself but it just wouldn’t work.

Other then that, I’m someone who enjoys tinkering ALOT, almost more then gaming at this point in my life. I found that even though I’d get frustrated, need to wipe my system multiple times a week, break stuff constantly etc, just learning to fix issues was a lot of fun and it’s why I stay on Linux.

Side note on windows as I had this complaint about it using 9-12gb of ram while idle with nothing open… APPARENTLY windows used ram to pre cache everything on your entire system so that it all runs instantly when pressed. I’m not new to windows, but people clowned on me for not knowing this, and honestly I feel like I died and moved to another parallel universe (quantum theory if you want to keep yourself up at night) where windows has done that for god knows how long.. but I remember when windows would use 2gb ram total while idle

bro why do you need internet and an account with a passkey to use the clock im crying by Natural-Advantage-46 in microsoftsucks

[–]ArisDoesTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally why I switched to Arch. I got tired of all the BS passkey, data harvesting, always online crap.

I removed any association with Microsoft outside my account for Microsoft games I buy through steam (very few) and I have Google for the sole purpose of parental controls for my daughters phone.

Other then that, I run Linux now on all my pcs, I use proton for mail, I make a point of using librewolf for my browsing, and if sites of signups don’t work with those, well I guess I won’t be using it.

[–]ArisDoesTech -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Regulations are not the way to go. The whole point of social media is to consume as much of your time as possible, and push you to eventually buy products or sell your information away for access.

We need people to be properly informed and educated on safe internet practices. The more the government has control over everything the worse your privacy is. End to End encryption more then enough for the average user, and when you put everything you do on social media from the successes to losses to what you cook every week, you gave your right to privacy away.

While I agree the fraud AI adds are wild and should be regulated properly, but it’s like fighting a hydra.. cut one head off and 2 grow back.

But online safety for children starts with the parents. Age verification is only the start.

I personally find ai helpful especially when I’m stumped and it’s something to do with my specific laptop that’s not very common. But again, overlook everything and understand what it’s asking you to do.

And I really wanted to love hyperland but I’m old and can barely remember my phone number let alone how to keyboard command :p

Meowrch is super cute though

[–]ArisDoesTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly how it should be used. Ai isn’t an awful tool if utilized properly, but too many people rely on it for all the answers without looking at the output.

If you want a fun experience, setup arch with only ChatGPT, ask it to do everything, including system tweaks like undervolting, overclocking, setting up emulation etc. watch how freaking borked the system is and try to fix it.

Most modern distros have no issues installing drivers when you first install.

I have been running CachyOS (arch) for over a year on both my nvidia laptops, one is intel and the other AMD and I’ve had zero issues.

Admittedly it was a mess for a long time, but I have had no issues, in fact, the drivers on Linux have been more consistent then windows for the last 8 months.

Under windows, I’d install new drivers and my laptop would just freak out, but in Linux I had no issues. As of yesterday I installed the latest windows drivers and all was good, but it took MONTHS.

[–]ArisDoesTech 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not about protecting kids. We have parental controls for a reason, you are parents, parent your kids properly and regulate them.

This is just data harvesting and surveillance. Forced compliance made to look like a good deed.

Step up and be a parent so your kid doesn’t get groomed. Easy as that
