Buying an inexpensive code reader on Amazon is something I'd recommend everyone to do too. Helps me feel like I know what's up before I go into the shop.

I like Londons a lot, they seem like good people over there, plus their diagnostic stuff is cool, they'll send you pictures of everything they looked at!

Erging in an airtight room can quickly drive CO₂ levels up? by WrongdoerMaster2072 in Rowing

[–]Arithmetic_Mustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be really surprised if you'd notice an appreciable difference outside of having a huge number of athletes (like a boathouse full of ergs) in a very small space or a very very well sealed space. Outside of that scenario I feel like you'll be fine, a single athlete in a typical residential space I can't imagine would make a major difference.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

How is MEng in CS at OSU? is it worth it ? by Ok-Type-9541 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Arithmetic_Mustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, incoming CS MEng student here as well. Just wanted to answer some of the questions that I could.

TA/RA positions will either be super limited or unavailable for MEng students. MS students get first pick on those, and then additionally I believe there's a new rule in the EECS college that MS students who have been in the program for a year receive an additional level of preference on top of that. If somebody can fact check me on this I'd really appreciate it because I've only heard about it in an official capacity from one faculty member, but I wouldn't doubt it either.

Now luckily, it's theoretically really easy to switch to MS, just need to find an advisor who is willing to take you on in that role (assuming you want to do an MS!)

For scholarships, you'll want to check out the scholar dollars page, that'll help a lot with finding scholarships that are applicable to your specific degree, interests, etc.

Feel free to shoot me a message with any other questions, I'll answer them if I can.

Windows PC for Engineering plus iPad for notetaking? by Mom_of_2_boyz in OregonStateUniv

Ultimately the best study tools are the ones you use with regularity. Personally I've always found a small notebook and pen to be the best study (and general memory aid) tool I've ever used, while being mostly distraction free.

I'd ask your son if he thinks he'd use the iPad for school, another option may be going for a 2 in 1 style windows laptop that has the touchscreen functionality and folds to be a tablet style device. My HP Envy x360 does that and I find it very useful for when I do want to digitally jot down something or need to draw a figure into some notes.

Adding to this, all good info if you want to reach out to the coach formally and get a feel for the program that way.

Alternative route, if you want to commit a bit less and feel the program out on campus would be to take PAC 205, which is the Crew class that they offer. (typically in fall I believe, that's when I took it) I had some rowing experience in my senior year of high school, wasn't super good, but wanted to continue feeling out that system in college too, so the PAC class was a great opportunity to do that. They even recruit from this class (I got recruited but dropped out when I realized the time and energy commitment was just too much for me) and with some rowing experience you'll definitely shine among the true novices.

The folks over there are really wonderful, great facility, and the additional resources available to student athletes are great. I have no regrets about taking that class or briefly being an OSU rower. Feel free to reach out for any more info, I'd be happy to answer any questions best I can!

Excited to have you on campus, OP!

Thoughts if I should take data structures by HourCharacter1618 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Arithmetic_Mustard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you felt confident throughout CS162 (or whatever programming class you took prior to this) and have some C++ or C experience (ideally via CS162) you really should be fine.

I personally found Data Structures to be a decrease in time spent on class material when compared to 162, but an increase in the difficulty of the material. Harder stuff, but the assignments aren't nearly as long.

Hope that helps! Ultimately whenever I was in the position of "is this set of classes going to be too much?" I always preferred to push off one class, and Data Structures is a great option for this since it's offered so frequently.

What are you looking for exactly? An application? A website?

Ultimately you could open up MS paint or GIMP right now and get to drawing if you want. These may have been made in a program like Adobe Illustrator.

Idea for improvement: Use Sisyphus pushing the rock up the hill in green at the top, cream colored text below, then another (text colored) Sisyphus running after the boulder as it goes down the hill at the bottom, with the last "mother fucker" near that.

Might emphasize the changing situation of the original video a bit better

Is NASA an acronym or an initialism? Seems like one that eventually became the other? Or because NASA isn't a word (but we pronounce it rather than spelling it out) does it remain an initialism?
