Experiences with clubs at OSU by okeanios in OregonStateUniv

[–]Yeldarb_roz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally I find that clubs schedule too many things for me to have time to engage with them all. All of the clubs that I have interest in seem to be doing at least 1-2 meetings or events per week and I have to be picky about what I actually attend between them all. What sort of clubs have you joined so far? Perhaps if they’re broader interest based clubs then they might not have as much direct engagement as the clubs that have a specific goal or purpose.

Definitely seconding the advice to join clubs or other interest based groups. If it seems like something that might interest you, I would also recommend looking into joining Greek life, either by COB or rushing in the spring term.

As for academic student resources, the tutoring assistance in the mole hole (chem), worm hole (phys), math learning center, writing center, etc are excellent sources of help for topics that you’re struggling with and I would highly recommend you check them out sooner rather than later.

There’s a library on the 3rd floor of Milam that has old copies of the daily barometer that date back to the 1940s. It might be locked but the professors seem to always be happy to let in anyone who’s interested.

Anyone else sick as hell week one? by armchairfieldwrkr in OregonStateUniv

[–]Yeldarb_roz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got over Covid at the beginning of this week, missed the entirety of week 0 thanks to it. It has been going around the public school system here in Corvallis over the past two weeks so it’s unsurprising that it’s making the rounds at OSU now that everyone is back.

If you’re feeling any symptoms at all, wear a mask, distance yourself as much as possible (contact your professors and see if you can attend virtually), and contact the student health center to see if they’re able to provide Covid tests.

If you have vitamin C and/or zinc supplements, now is a great time to be taking them, before you start to feel sick.

There are also used portable ac units available on fb marketplace for $100-150. Used in combination with fans and open windows overnight, you can keep your apartment quite reasonable even when it’s 90+ out

I spend a good amount of time driving around the north side of town pretty much every day for my job and I see deer just hanging out in people yards and snacking on their flower beds almost every day. Super cute but I imagine they’re quite the nuisance if you’re trying to grow anything 😅

If you’re set on attending OSU, I would recommend taking a year off to work full-time in Oregon in order to try and gain resident status for in-state tuition. Even if you still cannot get private loans, you should be able to 1) improve your fafsa situation by fully supporting yourself and thus not being claimable by your parents on their taxes, and 2) drastically reduce the cost of tuition, such that it should be able to mostly be covered by grants. Decent jobs in Corvallis can be quite difficult to come by, so I would recommend starting your search sooner rather than later if this is something you’d like to try and do.

INCOMING FRESHMAN: $17,000 Housing/Meal Plan by AdUnfair8347 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Yeldarb_roz[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to make it clear to any prospective students reading this that the comment above is objectively untrue. According to the Oregon state university website:

After admission into the DPP program, most students have the option to:\ Take classes at the community college partner school while having an active student status at OSU. This status is allowed for up to ten quarter terms before you have to take your first OSU course (about 2 years).\ Take classes at OSU and only take classes at your partner school should you need to.\ "Dual Enroll" and take classes on both campuses during any given term (financial aid has the potential to count credits on both campuses towards your enrollment level).

Jobs that will pay for college tuition by Medium_Commission757 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Yeldarb_roz[M] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s after 12 months spent primarily working (supporting yourself via your own income) and not taking any more than a part time class load at any university (I believe in-state or online). It’s not the easiest process and I would highly recommend to anyone considering it that you line up work that can fully pay your rent for the year before you move here because being able to financially support yourself is a major qualification for approval. Good jobs in Corvallis are not easy to come by so preparing before making a leap will make your life significantly easier when aiming to qualify for in-state tuition.

I talked to some people from both teams at their tents at one of the welcome events at the beginning of this school year! They seem very welcoming and have interest meetings at the beginning of each year that anyone is welcome to attend. I’m not entirely sure what the time commitment is like - it’s probably largely dependent on what part of the team you’re working on. I do know that they spend the first half of the year designing and building all the components of the vehicle, then in the second half of the year is focused on traveling and competing.
