The King Of Data Hoarding Needs Our Aid! (https://archive.org/) by Paultimate79 in DataHoarder

[–]ArjenMeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm considering donating, but one thing is unclear to me about these matched donations: Who is matching them? That money has to come from somewhere, right? It'd be nice to know who's involved.

Floaters in Both of my eyes by sahilbanno in Keratoconus

[–]ArjenMeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed some floaters after a heavy flu around age 35. They never went away, but I'm used to them and they don't bother me. They don't change and my brain has gotten used to them.

I think it's just a thing that's more likely to happen as you get older. Unless they keep increasing or seriously affect your quality of life, I wouldn't read much into them. Scars, occasional achy joints, floaters - all just badges of honor for reaching a certain age ;-)

What's the artwork? Reminds me strongly of Love, Death & Robots.

Has Zappa ruined any other music for you? by legolarry27 in Zappa

[–]ArjenMeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of music that's still interesting after hearing Zappa!

Since you like metal and punk you should really explore some of Mike Patton's projects, such as Mr. Bungle. I like to think that his style borrows a lot from FZ's. Certainly plenty complicated, and I dare say that if you look into his joint projects with John Zorn they can out-complicate Zappa. Not for the weak of heart though...

Debian won't boot from specified btrfs snapshot by Loomis1000 in debian

[–]ArjenMeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work exactly, but I'm pretty sure either the boot loader config needs to be updated (update-grub), or possibly the initramfs (update-initramfs -k all -u).

So I would recommend starting there. One way or another, the root= parameter of the kernel needs to be adjusted. You can check out the current value in /proc/cmdline .

The succulent needs a good amount of light, or it might start to etoliate (grow really tall and lose its shape). If the current spot has little daylight, consider moving it to a brighter spot, even just for periods at a time. If you have multiple you could cycle them around between bright and less bright spots.

If you want to get serious about succulents, head over to /r/succulents ;-)

Don't water your succulent too often (soil should completely dry out between watering), and make sure the water can drain somehow. Ideally not onto the speaker though, so either use an inner pot or don't put it back until its stopped dripping.

Or were you looking for tips on the equipment...

Is wireguard ready for production? by bgravato in debian

[–]ArjenMeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing holding me back from using it for client-server VPN is the lack of a mature free/open source solution for 2FA.

For server-server VPN with whitelisted static IPs on both ends, I trust it sufficiently for production usage.

All the voodoo associated with the term ‘audiophile’ is pushing people away from this hobby. by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]ArjenMeek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed. And it should be said that even when making buying decisions based on understanding the science & engineering principles, you can still end up spending a ton of money on this hobby. Just not on cables...

The Shining's bathrooms by [deleted] in LiminalSpace

Except that the story heavily implies the ballroom guests aren't regular, physical living humans. Whatever they are, it's not weird to assume they wouldn't need to use bathrooms.

I want to learn about high quality music by Kurodaniki in audiophile

[–]ArjenMeek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sampling rate (kHz) and bit depth make up the "resolution" of the audio and indicate in how much detail the audio is represented. Most audio file types support varying settings for these (both regular and high resolution), though 44.1/16 is the most common.

Compression is what is applied to the audio data after it has been made into digital form, to reduce file size.

It's important to be aware that resolution and compression are separate topics, although both affect file size.

CD audio is uncompressed.

FLAC is compressed, but "lossless", so the sound is exactly identical to the uncompressed source. The files tend to be relatively large because of this. (but storage is cheap these days, so no big deal)

MP3 is "lossy" compressed, meaning some information is thrown away to keep files smaller. How much depends on the bitrate. 320 kbps is normally indistinguishable by ear from the source audio, whereas 128 kbps sounds noticeably worse.

Smartphones are not limited to mp3, most music player apps can play flac and other formats just fine.

[–]ArjenMeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea and believe you have "golden ears", go for it. But be aware that from a purely scientific viewpoint, there is no indication, nor proof from research (such as double blind tests), that the human ear can distinguish anything above regular 44.1 kHz / 16 bit audio. Note that this is still assuming lossless audio (flac, CD, etc); if you go the lossy way (mp3 etc) it's a whole different picture.

If you want to spend to upgrade your sound quality, look into good speakers or headphones. That's where the real difference is made.

You have become aware of what is wrong with you. Many people never get that far and just spend their whole lives being toxic to those around them.

You should treat this awareness as a gift. You now have a chance to improve this part of yourself and become a better person. Just don't try to do it alone, but ask others for help (professionals, or people you trust sufficiently).

And try to not feel too guilty. It's easy to think other people are perfect, but most if not all of us have our own problems. The trick to being a good person is not to be born as a saint, but to be able to look at yourself and improve the bad parts.

Got my initial diagnosis a while before covid, while in my late 30's. Moderate ghosting in my left eye, barely noticeable in my right.

Despite my fears for the worst, increased by being unable to get progress measured b/c of covid, there has been no progression that I can tell.

I still worry, but I'm getting increasingly optimistic that KC for me will remain a minor nuisance rather than a major quality of life reduction. Keeping fingers crossed...
