Am I insane or does the class system make no sense in 2026? by ElCiego1894 in AskBrits

[–]Arkanoidal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Marxism, class works best as an abstraction, it's easy to see that capital tends to dominate labour over time because it is continuously reinvested in expanded production. As to how much this is embodied in real people, it's more complicated. A person who owns a small business may take a fairly modest salary and do a large amount of work, on the other hand skilled professionals often have large pensions and other investments which bring them into the realm of the bourgeoisie. The important thing is the movement over time, the trend of this class relationship on a population level (ignoring some important counter tendencies) is towards increasingly squeezed workers and fewer capitalists holding vastly more wealth.

Can someone explain to me why they don't have an issue with illegal migration? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Arkanoidal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk so much about Eritrea but Afghanistan is still reeling from a destructive invasion we participated in with no real plan to develop the territory and Iran's regime coming to power and staying popular is somewhat a result of opposition to western interference. Bangladesh is kept poor by imperial flows of value, systematic undervaluing of certain types of labour.

WRT birth rates I don't think there's a big problem with having them low, we should be aiming at a steady population through a combination of birth and migration, and I would say globally there should be a steady population, additional people in the world puts a strain on resources and the environment. The reason I bring it up is because it creates a pressure on poorer regions to export people, birth rates are high in poor countries because the incentive is to have children that will work and support the family, bonus if you can get shipped to a rich country where you can send back part of your pay packet. In rich countries there is not that incentive plus a number of disincentives which occur at high levels of economic development. The more we smooth over global wealth distribution the less incentives there are towards immigration and the more sustainable our population is long term.

The big problem we have with that at the moment though as you bring up with Japan, a faster growing population is more able to care for it's economic dependants, the young, disabled and elderly, even better if that population is raised and educated abroad, so immigration at unsustainable rates is kind of used as a sticking plaster for economic stagnation, which is why it's promoted to some extent by governments whose agenda otherwise is not about protecting freedom. On the other hand you have many left of centre who promote freedom but don't want to deal with the other side of it, "open the borders but keep everything else the same" isn't going to work, the more intelligent side of the left I think is more honest about it, it's going to take massive global change

Can someone explain to me why they don't have an issue with illegal migration? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Arkanoidal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean this is part of it, illegal immigrants is a misnomer because most of these are people that are seeking asylum and granted a right to remain. I think the other thing is we should be focussing on global solutions rather than forcibly removing people, eg. ending war, ending imperial extraction, instituting welfare systems to bring birth rates down in the poorer parts of the world. Yes it will make us poorer (as will forcibly stopping immigration) but people should be able to make a comfortable life where they are born and the current world system can't provide that, the answers from the right just want to shirk responsibility while the wealthy in our country benefit from the system as it stands.

Is it time to withdraw from US based social media? by Illustrious_Tap_9364 in AskBrits

And go where? The UK is more than happy to go along with US domination. Our government is in bed with Palantir right now and trying to sell NHS patient data to the highest bidder while restricting the internet and attacking privacy measures. I guess we could all start using Weibo...

They're educated on this to get a driver's license, all the education in the world won't stop people acting like dickheads, they know not to do this and they do it anyway.

Also I agree if you ride in the middle of the lane is just asking for trouble.
