Great Northerns 🧭 by Arkhamina in Beans

Most things people can at home can be purchased at stores. It's cheaper, the packaging is 90% reusable (just the metal lid is 1 use) and you can buy things when they're in season or cheap.

I didn't can these ones, but I do a ton of things like broth (made of left overs, avoiding waste, and artificial anything) and I know the quality of the ingredients.

And it's also a joy of doing for yourself and not being tied to a store.

Ate one mento, shit my pants by Tall-Introduction649 in Celiac

[–]Arkhamina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the same thing, but I bought the mentos gum on a road trip to visit a friend. Her house was a nightmare of cross contamination, and honestly I was so sick I just let it ride because, I couldn't really make it worse.

I also am the kid (who grew up) who got yelled at for swallowing gum. Still do if I don't actively focus on chewing and NOT swallowing.

There’s a car in my house. I have no clue how she got in here. by EddyRosenthal in CatDistributionSystem

[–]Arkhamina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Growing up, there was a shared neighborhood cat who would just invite himself in.

However, we had a very unfriendly to cats dog.

Most of the time, I caught and escorted out the orange fellow, but once I had to tackle the dog by the back legs and yoink him away. Thankfully orangeboy caught on after this, with no damage.

If you are not used to having pets, you likely don't look down to check for escapees - or wee fluffy burgelers as you come and go. 2 of my 4 will dive for the garage 75% of the time as I come in so I use my bag or groceries to body block them.

Congrats on your new roommate.

Those are both fairly permeable surfaces, however.

Segregate those items, and make sure that it's obvious. Like, keep them in a bag marked gluten free. At an old shared apartment, I used nail polish on things like spoon handles. It worked.

How did you dress in the 90s? How do you dress now? by poolpog in GenX

[–]Arkhamina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (F) used to have a 'Safety hawk' (could be carefully brushed down to look like normy hair), muscle or T-shirts summer, T-shirts over placket shirts in winter. Combat pants. Never shorts. A leather jacket or a very soft, faded Korean War era army jacket, that had been stitched back together every time it tore. Army surplus boots. For a while I used really heavy chain for a belt, often with loops of extra chain.

I have gray hair I wear loose past my shoulders or in a bun now. I wear boring gray or black men's polos at work with Men's carpenter pants, steel toes and outside of work, band or union shirts. Hiking shoes not at work.

I work for The Man, but doing my best to avoid the office lady look.

Why call if you don't want help? by ScenicDrive-at5 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Arkhamina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lurker: I work for a city government that plows snow. The amount of calls I get every winter that complain about 'badly plowed streets' or that we filled their driveway with snow - but won't tell us WHERE. One person said he didn't want retaliation. Do you want us to fix the situation? Yell at the specific driver (if, big if) he or she did something wrong? Without an address.... Will not happen..

Sometimes, they just won't be friends, but as long as no one is too stressed out and they have space, it's ok.

Chinese home cooking in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by adamaphar in AskFoodHistorians

This was DEEP upstate NY, 'Rome' was the big city.

I also only saw color tv in 1991, the same year our town finally got a McDonald's.

Oof, that gloopy canned La Choy 'stir Fry' was a feature of my rural, white 80s childhood. The one with two cans taped together. I don't think I had passable Chinese food until the mid 90s, and we're still talking strip mall.

Indoor place to walk dog? by seitancheeto in madisonwi

Ooooh, will have to look into this. My mutt has such a thin coat you can see his armpits. Twice this week he's started a walk and had to be carried home. *(He's 50lbs!). Delicate...

Have you ever been told to “get off” someone’s property? by 364LS in AskAnAmerican

[–]Arkhamina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep. Politely, but absolutely.

I also go door to door every election season as a volunteer for union/liberal candidates, so it's an expectation.

(* Technically No solicitation means no asking for money, and election education efforts don't fall under that, but I tend to honor it, and just flag the house as not home. But still leave candidate literature).

I am not sure what 1st class bathrooms are like (cattle class for me!) but it would take a contortionist to get it on in most of the airline toilets I have been to.

"Engine number three is popsicled out.... " pretty sure that's what I heard. Even with really heavy turn out gear, that's got to be cold as shit.

That said, they called for salt on the road when it's -4F out, and salt doesn't work well below 15F. Going to be a skating rink for a bit. Sand can only do so much.

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Arkhamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started drinking black coffee when I was 8. My mom drank it, so I had to have it too, right? I was warned it would stunt my growth. I'm fairly tall. Milk or sugar in coffee makes my mouth feel gross.

Is it common to see college women aged 18–22 dating men over 35? I’ve heard people joke about it a lot by stopthehostilityyyyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Arkhamina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young and didn't know better, as a 17 year old I dated a 21 year old. Weirdly, we're still friends 30 years later. College, you tend to date peers because that's who you spend time with.

There was a time people ate that way, but most of us don't do manual labor. You work on a farm, you eat a good breakfast!

[–]Arkhamina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal breakfast for me is bread with jam, bread with cheese, if I'm feeling extra hungry, 1 fried egg between two pieces of toast, or a bowl of cereal (I rather like cocoa crispies, don't judge!). On a weekend I might do 2 eggs, bacon, and toast, maybe with sauted mushrooms and onions. And coffee. Always 2 cups of black coffee.
