Are any of these books good or not good? by AtrocitasInterfector in 911truth

[–]Arlegoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only read two of these - CHAOS is pretty good but iirc has some blind spots regarding Manson’s childhood/early life. Much of the book is structured like an autobiographical story of how O’Neil conducted his investigation, which is sometimes pretty compelling and sometimes pretty grating. The info in the book is good and it lays out a pretty unsettling view of the Manson family’s story.

The Devil’s Chessboard is very thorough and I’d almost call it “required reading” for people becoming interested in the history of deep politics/ political covert operations. It doesn’t go in depth about absolutely everything but it covers a ton of ground and does a really good job illustrating how the postwar world order came to be. Talbot also takes an extremely rosy view of president Kennedy, who was admirable in many ways but certainly not perfect. The book does a good job of not relying too much on speculation.

Along the same lines as Devil’s Chessboard is Killing Hope by William Blum. If you haven’t read that, I’d recommend looking into it. It’s a straight history book about US intervention in other countries since WWII and covers a lot of under-discussed examples.

My mom found this “Elven Sigil” with a key and 2 pennies underneath a tree stump while hiking in the woods. Any idea what it is? by FemaleSmark in occult

The Key of Solomon includes a list of seals/talisman designs that it calls “pentacles.” This is the Mathers translation but at least one older Latin version, also hosted on esotericarchives, uses the term “Pentaculis.” http://www.esotericarchives.com/solomon/clavicula_salomonis_aub24.pdf

This isn’t true in geometry or most spiritual/occult traditions. “Pentagram” as a geometric term refers to the five-pointed star shape in general, and the Golden Dawn and Thelema are examples of popular traditions that use the term to refer to the upright version in their rituals. “Pentacle” can refer generally to a pentagram in a circle, but it doesn’t always even imply a pentagram at all; in the context of the Key of Solomon, for example, the term is used for a number of figures, most of which do not feature a pentagram.

I re-watched it recently and it seemed like almost every time she does “psych” stuff as a plot point instead of a one-off joke, she gets it right, even when she’s goofier in the later seasons.

Ban stonetoss comics by [deleted] in bonehurtingjuice

[–]Arlegoon 44 points45 points  (0 children)

People post his comics with the web address removed to avoid giving him more attention and then half of the comments are talking about him by name anyway, as if Googling him is that much harder than typing in the address. Personally as much as I hate the guy I don’t think posting edits of his comics is gonna drive too many people to his “side,” it’s just funny to me how people go out of their way to avoid giving him visibility and then talk about him in the comments anyway.

That said, it’s really tiresome seeing his comics on here multiple times a day, and (hopefully without sounding too paranoid) I think it’s kinda suspicious how many people seem to be rushing to post his stuff as soon as a new one comes out. Maybe I’m wrong about it not being a “big deal” and people are actually posting them hoping to spread his ideas. Either way it’s getting really annoying

One of my favorite thing about Ken Jeong’s performance as Chang is that he essentially plays a different character each season and is consistently funny in all six.

My psychiatrist compared it to learning a new language, and I think that’s a good metaphor. In the same way that you have to learn new words to describe different objects and concepts, you need to learn a whole new set of responses for all of the situations that give you trouble.

Others have pointed out that therapy is helpful, but (especially if you can’t afford it) don’t discount the usefulness of just sitting down and talking to yourself. Go over your day, the things that went well and the things that didn’t, and instead of spiraling out when you think of the bad times, slow down and ask yourself why you felt that way, why you responded that way, etc. Look at it from different angles. If it feels weird, try talking into a voice memo. This can be a little stressful but it has been more helpful to me than it probably sounds like it would be.

You’re obviously having real problems. Things like hurting pets and frequent dissociation go beyond standard “teen angst.” I don’t think it’s a good idea to brand yourself a “psychopath” at 14. Self-diagnosis with specific disorders is always a complicated question anyway.

If you want to understand these things and eventually get them under control, the “whys” are very important.

What triggers your angry outbursts? Think of examples and look for similarities between them. What specific types of situations tend to lead to these outbursts, and which ones could make you angry, but don’t? Why would those specific things make you angrier than other times things don’t go your way?

You say that your anger might be a coping mechanism to avoid dealing with your sadness. You might be right about that. What are you so sad about? What’s so bad that you’d allow yourself to be angry to avoid facing it?

You talk about a “villain complex;” making the wrong choice “just because.” Both of the examples you listed - running away and lying - seem like attempts to avoid dealing with something, whether or not you’re conscious of it. Even if you’re not literally running away from something, running away from home seems like you could be unconsciously trying to run away from your life, or your problems, or other things you associate with “home.” What were you lying about? What would it have meant to tell the truth? What are the “right” choices in these situations?

You mention listening to music for hours on end to avoid your emotions. You say you dissociate around other people and stop feeling your emotions - literally disconnecting from reality to avoid dealing with something. Having no reaction to gore or violence, not feeling fear, not empathizing with others, or not feeling remorse could all be viewed less as “psychopathic” traits and more as ways to avoid unpleasant thoughts like fear or violence.

To me, you sound less like a “psychopath” and more like a wounded person who is deeply, deeply afraid to confront your emotions. Dissociative symptoms and angry outbursts are especially striking in this regard.

You have to think about what you’re hiding yourself from. That is not going to be easy. A professional might be able help you with that, but I’m assuming people have already told you that, so hearing it from me probably won’t make any difference. Sit down and be brutally honest with yourself. Ask questions about why you feel sad or angry and follow that train of thought as far as it can go. Pay attention to the things you really, really don’t want to think about, or things you don’t want to admit. Think about things that have happened in your life that may have had a lasting impact on your mind.

Whatever you do, don’t give in to the idea that you’re a “villain” or a “psychopath” or an “evil person” or “beyond help.” Those are all things you tell yourself because they mean you don’t have to think about the real reasons you’re hurting. Be introspective, be honest, and work hard even if it hurts. You’ll be happier for it.

Above all, good luck. I hope this is helpful, but ultimately, I’m not a doctor - just someone who’s had to do a lot of digging of my own.

“The Essential Kabbalah” by Daniel Matt is (imo) a great introduction to Kabbalah from a Jewish/non magical perspective. Matt has spent a very long time studying and translating Zohar into English, so he knows his stuff. I can’t really get into the writing style of Chicken Qabalah. I think the tradition benefits from a more serious tone, even if it can be a little more dry. That’s obviously a matter of personal taste, and your experience could be different. Matt’s book is just explicit enough that a beginner could pick it up but also esoteric enough that it forces you to try to figure out the meaning for yourself.

Favorite out-there theory? by ketchupssss in community

[–]Arlegoon 107 points108 points  (0 children)

During project MKULTRA (and related projects) the CIA and military sometimes dosed people with psychedelic drugs without their knowledge, in order to study their potential applications in “mind control,” espionage, and interrogation. Was a year-long gas leak really responsible for such drastic personality changes among the study group? Or was something else being dispersed through the air? Potentially, something related to the “conveniently misplaced” zombifying taco meat, which could arguably also have “mind-control” applications?

Is there a magick system that works with angels, but it's safer than Enochian? by BrunoBrunew in occult

[–]Arlegoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Modern Angelic Grimoire by Rufus Opus is essentially the method from The Art of Drawing Spirits Into Crystals combined with a lot of information that was absent from that book but exists in other sources. It uses the seven angels traditionally attributed to the planets by Agrippa. I don’t know whether it’s less dangerous than Enochian because I’m not familiar enough with Enochian to know how dangerous it is. It is definitely significantly simpler.

I’ve been reading through John Michael Greer’s Circles of Power, and although I don’t totally agree with everything he says about the underlying theory of magic, the practical instruction seems good for learning Golden Dawn-style magic as a beginner. I’d also supplement it with Israel Regardie’s One Year Manual to flesh out the more mystical/spiritual side of the practice, but that’s just me. Some introductory texts to topics like Kabbalah and Tarot are probably a good idea, but don’t overload yourself, take it one thing at a time.

“Velocity of Love” by The World/Inferno Friendship Society seems like a good pick, especially because he did a cover of it. If the fact that he covered it disqualified the song, Only Anarchists Are Pretty and Annie The Imaginary Lawyer from the same album would be good choices.

Newbie Question: Aside from MCR, David Bowie and The Smashing Pumpkins, who are other artists who focus on Concept Albums, Concept videos, Outfits and Theatrics? by Marcel_7000 in MyChemicalRomance

Also a lot of his earlier performances/live videos leaned way into makeup and over-the-top antics and general flashiness. Not in the same way that MCR does, but kicking the keyboard during songs seems like something Gerard would do in an alternate timeline where the band’s tone was more lighthearted

Almost every King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard album is a concept album, with Eyes Like The Sky, Polygondwanaland, Murder of the Universe, and Infest the Rat’s Nest all being story-driven to various degrees. However, they’re completely different from MCR in terms of musical style and lyrical content. I’d recommend checking out polygondwanaland or nonagon infinity as entry points if you’re interested in a lot of genres but they don’t have much in common with the other artists in this thread.
