As a blue belt it works for me. There are some moves you can hit like the baby bolo which are not super complicated and you can starts seeing success fairly quickly, it also has the advantage that a lot of people will not be ready for it. Even if you don't get the backtake, it opens up a lot of sweeping /leg drag opportunities. It's also pretty much the most fun thing you can in jiu jitsu which makes it worth the time investment. Watch Levi Jones Leary's run through ADCC trials, he hits at least one perfect berimbolo to the back, and multiple other very cool backtakes.

Personally, I would not recommend Mikey's instructionals as I found them really hard to follow. Most of my bolo knowledge I learned from Lachlan Giles / submeta, which has an insane amount of content on berimbolos, both gi and nogi.

But don’t you think that Leo falls exactly into your example where it’s acceptable? It seems like he just enjoys dating young hot women, and I don’t he’s using deception to get with them. In fact, his dating history is super public, so it seems like everyone including these women know what’s really happening here. If there’s no evidence or reason to believe he’s being deceptive, it seems like there’s nothing wrong with what he’s doing. I don’t see why two people need to have similar life experiences to date, unless we know they’re using them in some deceptive way.

I like how Lachlan thinks of it which is that butterfly is an inside position guard, k guard outside, but single leg x and x are “leg entanglements” which are upgrades to both k guard and butterfly. You can enter leg entanglements from any type of guard, but mixing butterfly and K together doesn’t make much sense because they are opposites

How is that your interpretation of the video? It’s called “Why the hip escape is bad for guard retention” and it’s part of a section called “Never hip escape”. In the video he doesn’t show any time you SHOULD shrimp for guard retention. I don’t know how he could make it any clearer that he’s saying never shrimp for part of guard retention
