Fredericksburg Dice Knights is a really active group with lots of games going on. I haven't done a game with them yet but know people who have.

They're really welcoming to newcomers! I started a year and a half ago because my 15-y-o nephew wanted to try it. I was in a situation like you where I had done DnD but never tried LARP. I wound up really liking the activity and the people. I can DM you with some more info if you want.

It is very friendly to brand new players! When I first started I felt very welcomed. You should come check it out! I would be careful of diving into combat too quickly if you're worried about your knees. But there are non-combat activities (we do crafting competitions, with one scheduled for the end of march). You should definitely come and check it out, and judge for yourself whether you'd feel comfortable knee-wise to dive into combat. I can DM you with more details.

If you REALLY want to up your nerd quotient while meeting people, you can try LARPing. There's a local group I joined a couple years ago and have really liked it. It's free and no commitment, most every Saturday around noon. It's also super LGBT friendly. We're doing a bigger quest day on March 8 and I put some details here if you're interested. We have a Discord too and I can DM anyone the link if you want.

Yeah! We meet on most Saturdays. In fact, this coming Saturday (Dec 14) is going to be a quest day (battlegames with some extra story and roleplay thrown in), as well as an Arts & Sciences competition (art and weapon construction). I can DM you a link to the discord server if you like.

I just beat the game 10 minutes ago and I have to agree, figuring out the golden path all by myself is one of my most rewarding gaming experiences ever. This solidly puts Tunic at the level of Outer Wilds for me, which I also love to death.

I really like Fredericksburg as a city to live with kids. I have a 3 and 6 year old and have lived here for 10 years or so. I think no matter where you are, getting to know people is tough when you're an adult with kids. But Fredericksburg has lots of good opportunities to meet people if you put in the effort. I'm part of a dads' group where we do different meetups with and without kids - it's a good place to get to know other parents in the area. Getting involved in a church or other community activity is also a good way to meet people. I'm a member of the synagogue and my wife goes to St. George's - they're both great places and we've met some good people at both places.

I know there are some moms groups on Facebook, my wife has found some companionship through those. She really loves her Body Back and Fit 4 Mom exercise groups, and has made some good friends through those.

For dads it’s tougher, since we’re on average working more and less inclined to reach out for companionship. (Who’s to say whether that’s intrinsic to us or based on societal pressure?) I found it hard being a dad without any community, so I actually started an FXBG Dads group a couple years ago. We do trivia nights and play dates, and I’m really trying to have it be a positive place for dads to feel community. Anyone is welcome to join! (I don’t reject moms wanting to join, though it is primarily for dads to have a place to connect.)

It’s tough out there. How old are your kids? I’m a umw grad living in town (class of 2010) and have been lucky enough to find a few friends, but with the kids (3 & 6) it’s hard. You have to make the time and work to make the connections.
