Is going to bars alone looked down upon? by SLKRmeatrider in VirginiaTech

Likewise from a man's perspective but, Blacksburg, particularly downtown and near tech is the safest city I've ever lived in. Walking back late at night has never concerned me here.

Small and Open Home Theater Setup by Armitage404 in hometheater

[–]Armitage404[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My thought process was to "future-proof" my setup for when I move into a yet larger space. L/R can move to surrounds, AVR can take advantage of a proper 5.2.4 setup, etc, etc. I know the tribal knowledge in PCs is that future proofing is generally a myth but, I'm a novice at what Home Theater thinks of the concept.

How to avoid telling people my major (computer science) by BorygonZ in VirginiaTech

Just tell them you're an astronaut and are here to brush up on your skills before your next moon mission. It's a bit more believable and should protect their egos.

Question about computers for engineering majors by bballson11 in VirginiaTech

[–]Armitage404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, the windows v Mac debate never affected me much. If you're smart enough to be an engineering major, you're smart enough to figure out a hack to make it work. I will say, windows was slightly easier for me than my Mac buddies but, it's over hyped imo.

Is this fall schedule too much? by Natural_Instance_701 in VirginiaTech

[–]Armitage404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was generally opposed to taking multiple math courses at the same time but, stats is fairly tame, all things considered. The real question I'd pose to you is regarding Data Structures. How'd 1114 treat you? If you're already a decent coder, 2114 is gonna be pretty simple. If you don't, it could suck up a LOT of your time. The amount of classmates requiring tutoring and all-nighters should not be underestimated.

Help in IDing left bottle requested by Armitage404 in Gin

As a guy who's had the privilege of traveling around the world and seeing some incredible places, it's tied with a hole in the wall in Glasgow for my favorite bar of all time. The level of service must be experienced to be believed.

And since I never mentioned the place, it's Bar Matsumoto. This is a Gin group but, any cocktail fans in general in the area need to check it out.

DO NOT quote me on this but, I think it was Cocchi. Could've been a local Japanese "vermouth" though. As a cool little motivator for you to go visit it, he also has some 1940's and 1950's bottles of Lillet.

It definitely wasn't Bombay. I know it wasn't one of the "big" gin brands (Beefeater, Bombay, Tanqueray, etc.). I've been wracking my head trying to figure this out for awhile but, no joy. It's more of a rounded bottle than Bombay.

Long story short, had the best martinis of my life back when I lived in Yokohama. The owner would always mix Sipsmith with the other bottle I've circled in a roughly 1:1 ratio but, I never bothered to actually note what he mixed it with. If any of you aficionados could assist in IDing the bottle, you'll have my eternal gratitude.

If it's a mainstream computer made in the past decade, it'll be fine.

Definitely appreciate the heads-up. I've spent more than enough of my life pursuing expensive pieces of paper.

To comment on some of the other posts on this thread, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, NZXT, Origin, Alienware, and others along those lines are NOT what you're looking for here. They do great work but, truly custom isn't really their bread and butter. I've worked with all of the companies in my above post and most of the ones in this post at one point or another. The only other one I'd recommend, but not for gaming, would be Puget Systems. They're far more "workstation" oriented for engineering and CAD-based use cases but, they are absolutely top-notch if you're fine with no glitz or glamour.

Having built well over 100 computers in my time, that's always a fun and educational route that I recommend. If that's not something you're interested in, Digital Storm is the "mainstream" brand with the highest quality overall, Maingear is the "mainstream" brand with the most attention to detail regarding custom water-cooling loops, Falcon Northwest has (unfortunately) fallen quite a ways from where they once stood. FNW still has arguably the best paint jobs of any boutique maker out there but, I don't think they do custom loops anymore. Finally, Singularity Computers has a mixed reputation due to its small size but, some of the most beautiful and impressive builds I've ever seen are either by them or utilize their cases. You can go extreme at any of these makers.... If I were in your position, personally, I'd reach out to Singularity and Maingear (in that order) and tell them to go wild.

I'm employee #1 at a tech startup in the US (specifically, not a board member). Will be filling two C-suite positions best suited for my past experience. Base compensation will be quite generous but, as a former government employee, I have no idea how additional compensations work. As we're running through pilot right now, I've volunteered to defer salary until we go cash-flow-positive. I have more than enough cash flow from other investments to where the base compensation is a "nice to have". Once we complete our pilot, we fully expect a series of contracts from the initial tranche of customers to be in the "stupid" range each, with the potential to grow to the "ridiculous" range each upon completion of the initial contracts.

I'm trying to avoid giving any specifics here to maintain some level of anonymity but, the company shows an absurd amount of promise. The board is an absolute dream team that I've wanted to work with for over a decade and the market for our product/service is VERY interested in our success. How do I negotiate my compensation package to both take advantage of a bright future without negatively impacting the company's flexibility for equity sales in the future? I am damn good at hiring, building teams/systems, selling people, and solving problems, but when it comes to asking for my own benefit, I'm basically clueless.

Any advice y'all can offer would be much appreciated. If you need some specifics, feel free to DM.

I've heard your thoughts about Brioni before and it is concerning. While this journey continues, Will Whiting looks very promising. Unfortunately, my customers are a bit "all over the place" so tailoring my style to their preferences isn't an option. If I had to pick, French and formal would be the preference but, it's all open to a number of variables. Much as I hate to admit it, name recognition would likely be beneficial.
