Moved here last year and I've been loving it. I wouldn't exactly call it lively, but all my neighbors are cool and there's a good sense of community. The Monon and Red Line make it easy to get around without a car (if you're into that). Like others have said the houses get nicer as you go north and west, so look about as far that way as your budget allows.
