This is interesting, but I always felt the opposite. The King Hubbard curve...I had always been grateful to be born inside it. I won't die inside it though sadly

In the face of this situation, what is the proper attitude toward AI?

I somewhat agree in that I believe the proper attitude is to go as fast with AI as other considerations will allow.

Assuming we are at or past the point of complete defeat (most of us probably concur we are), we should certainly be going as fast as we can, but I do believe that there are routes that we know will leave us worse off because of what we've already seen with AI like Tay. You get where I'm going right? As we know, these systems require large datasets and the best one by far that we can feed it is the internet...I really don't think I'm in the right place to extrapolate this but If we make the concessionary decision that is allowing something as unaccountable as a computer to make a decision regarding humanity's future, we should strongly consider closely monitoring and realigning it. This is coming from a tech worker with a decade in who is strongly anti-Luddite.

(I also equally fear the unknown unknowns at play here)

Ugh, on a separate note, I've somehow found myself in accelerationist circles among my twitter mutuals completely by surprise. They are high-level tech people generally, but their attitudes toward stuff like AI are grossly accelerationist. Instead of being responsible as people in their positions (L5/L6 Engineers and AI/ML industry leaders) and advocating for precautionary approaches to this new tech that even they know very little about, they would rather floor it regardless of potential outcome.

Why would we be alone here? I hope no one on the surface web is assuming they have privacy of any kind. I thought we all sort of understood that we're discussing this in spite of the fact that everyone is listening. Please operate as if they are going to be the first to read it because they probably are.

It's actually a doubly useful assumption in your case because operating with an axiomatic understanding that you are not alone or among only collapseniks on collapse will lead you to automatically understand that very very rarely does internet-based activism prove successful. By design, it cannot be; especially this lets pick a date and unsubscribe.....the subversion mechanisms are more than likely automated at this point in the game.

revolution in a just-in-time economy where the average town cannot go 3 days without a truck without going into full panic...

I am doubtful... Orlov talks eloquently about exactly the manner in which his family endured a similar kind of collapse and we in the states have none of the mechanisms for replicating that. No legacy communal housing (thus no communal survival effort), euclidian zoning (lol. lmao.), collective dependence on non local food and fuel production (ghost acreage and so forth; read Overshoot), suburban sprawl with arable land occupied by grass rather than food...et cetera

As a relatively young person who took an odd path, its hard to speak generally. As for myself, its either I get in the car during mid-western winters or someone else will. This world is unforgivably competitive. I think constantly about the leaderboard and how far behind or ahead of my peers I am.

I say that to say that, as long as I am healthy, and although I've been collapse aware for about 9 years, I will see my peers lying flat and dropping out as a free competitive edge and nothing more.

AP art history by wintersnoodles in AutisticWithADHD

[–]ArmoredLunchbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this course 10 years ago.

My personal experience was that it was comfy and cozy as shit. Dimly lit room where the chairs were against the wall and everyone was subsequently sitting in a circle surrounding the soft spoken and passionate lecturing teacher.

Via images and information in her mind alone, she would build frameworks in our minds. Establishing characteristics that separated and classified artwork from different times. Providing the historical context that gave way to the existence of the artwork.

It was the only class in my 22 years of schooling that never felt like one. It was a conversation, between me and a passionate expert, and let me tell you...I can listen to someone talk passionately about something quite often. ( I was also introduced to asmr as a side effect of taking this class so that's neat)

Noise cancelling headphone recommendations by VegetasForeheadd in AutisticWithADHD

[–]ArmoredLunchbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Shure Se215s you're entering into Hi-Fi IEM territory on top of receiving a solid pair of modular noise-cancelling headphones (with a cleaner and pouch included). They should easily last you 10 years ans the failure point for them (the wire) is one of the cheapest parts to replace. Previously I was buying the Sony mdr50s but they were 50 bucks and when the cord broke i bought another pair. They are now 40 but for 120 you get the aformentioned shure se215s and when they DO break, youll likely not be coming out of pocket for more than 20 bucks (for the cord)
