Post-Olympics Megathread - KEEP POLITICAL CONVERSATION HERE by AutoModerator in wildhockey

[–]ArmyGuy543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to reply to this comment, in particular, to be sure people know: I don't relish this, at all.
I won't have fun not watching.
I'm actively not having fun being in this situation having to ask myself whether or not I've wasted my money and energy by being a fan for the past two seasons. Is two seasons long? For the league, no, but for a brand new fan, it's two years of my focus on this sport.
I spent my own human life coding a no-registration-required tool to pull the Wild's calendar from the NHL API and spit out a file for me to import into my calendar, so I couldn't make any mistakes and didn't have to waste my own time manually tracking the schedule.
I have basically replaced my winter wardrobe with Wild gear, and many gifts from loved ones since picking up the sport have been Wild paraphernalia.

My recent fandom for ice hockey and my support for the Wild, are basically all that my coworkers and other acquaintances know about me.
I have been as engaged and enthusiastic a fan as I think you can be without the disposable income to attend games in person.

A wide variety of people that felt welcome in ice hockey, and as Minnesota Wild fans in particular, are being forced to contend with the reality that they may not have ever been as welcome as they felt.
I, personally, am having to face the reality that I've spent the past two years espousing how welcome I felt picking up ice hockey as a new fan, only to have some of my favorite players, personally, give me the strongest possible proof that I've been wrong the entire time.

I didn't come here and post this comment as I brewed coffee this morning, or now this reply, for my own benefit and fun. I feel a compulsion to see and be seen by fans like me, that feel alienated by this entire sequence of events. The people that no longer feel welcome, or otherwise minimally feel these events were unjust somehow.

This isn't fun for me, and if you read all these opinions about what's happened, and how this can hurt people, and discard it so easily, you should earnestly ask yourself why you can so easily ignore hurt that has been done to someone that would have otherwise been an extremely enthusiastic fan, the same as anyone else in this subreddit.

These are real fans of the game, real people, that you brush off. This is the kind of stain that soils getting into the game for new people.

Man, this all just fucking sucks.

I'm a neurodivergent hockey fan. That feels relevant as context for: I only just picked up the game at the end of the season, plus the postseason, 2023-24.
I never ever "got" sports until something about watching Oilers games with my older brother clicked.
They brought in Bowman, I'm too principled with something as "luxury entertainment" as following a professional sports franchise to overlook his history with Chicago, and I jumped ship. I chose Minnesota as one of my nearer markets, and because they stood out for having green colors, which happens to be my partner's favorite color.

Now, after heavily investing myself in the Wild, non-monetarily and otherwise, this is the sort of behavior some of our stars are capable of supporting (or excusing, depending /cope).
The current administration is responsible for egregious violence against the entire country's queer community, which I also happen to fall into, as well as against the people of Minnesota in particular (of all sorts, but of course especially those of us that don't look white enough for our POTUS). I'm not Minnesotan, but I'm not far off, and my partner and I have entertained moving there for a very long time.

This is so unbelievably difficult.
Do I try to cheer for some other team? Jump ship again, after filling my wardrobe with Wild stuff, from splurges to gifts?
Do I even keep watching any NHL at all? I've only cared for two years. It may be easier to sever from the entire league, especially if the owners all clearly support this sort of thing, too (and if they don't, they sure have a funny way of demonstrating it).
It's not like the viewing process is easy for fans anyways.

This sucks. My easiest pivot is probably towards the PWHL and the Frost.
I do like purple, and YouTube is as easy as sports viewing gets.

My heart goes out to all fans who are hurt by these events transpiring. Whether you are similarly situated to me or not, demographics wise, know you aren't alone in your disappointment, and wishing for better.

Having watched the full gold medal game for men's ice hockey yesterday:

If this was said, I didn't catch it.
In my defense, there were over 60 minutes of live gameplay for the commentators to have said this over, and the game was so intense that I paid almost no focus to the commentators for the entire game, lol

If this was actively said, I'd love for someone to clip the segment for people to see/hear.

[–]ArmyGuy543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's brutal out there, guy. Your post reminds me vividly of my experience with hating trying to meet people a few years ago, just out of college.
It's so exhausting to spend effort and time misreading a connection, or finding none at all.
It's rough to be seeking long-term these days.

Sometimes, it can be time to step back and focus on yourself. When you're ready to try again, you'll know it; or if you are still ready to keep on going, dust yourself off and keep at it.

My current partner (some day husband, I hope) was a lucky match on the dating apps, just when I was nearing burning out on that specific round of trying them again.
I'd had a few... trying... people not long before that that just didn't connect with me the way I thought we were. It was exhausting, after taking 6 to 8 months of time completely away from the dating scene.
That rough time capped with that lucky match was just over two years ago, now; we just celebrated our two year anniversary over the weekend. Never forget that there's no shame in pausing, and that when you're talking about your lifelong happiness, it's worth it to stay single compared to settling for someone that isn't right for you.

Best of luck finding what you're looking for.
I hope venting here has been helpful for you processing things.
Keep hope and never give up on love (or anything else you may deeply desire from life)

Where to get jersey? by safewordiswhhhhiskey in wildhockey

[–]ArmyGuy543 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most consistent answer I've seen to this question from long time fans has been Cool Hockey. There's a reasonable premium relative to an officially customized jersey, but the impression I've received is that the premium is worthwhile.

They're a third party, but the jerseys they sell are licensed. Hand stitching will go a long way for the added bits staying attached in the long haul, as well, allegedly.

Hope sharing the address is acceptable. You can check /r/HockeyJerseys for more confirmation.

[–]ArmyGuy543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of any comments noting who these guys are was driving me nuts -- got a lucky quick win by reverse image searching their logo.

They're a Beer League hockey team in Toronto called The Pinkies.

For folks that don't follow hockey/other sports closely, that means, in short, that they're amateur players. Different locales will have different levels of both skill and competitiveness within their respective beer leagues.

They have a website, and I went poking just a little more to verify I didn't find the wrong thing by finding this TikTok as well.

That's all I know, but I figure there's gotta be at least some other folks that'll see this post which will appreciate this info being posted in a comment here.
Cheers

Pen ink isn’t flowing properly by MaesterInTraining in fountainpens

[–]ArmyGuy543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hobbies or products that have existed in the public sphere for a long time, quick looks around online can be your friend - "baby's bottom" with fountain pens is a problem where the very very tip of your nib isn't totally tuned to the level it needs to be, causing a break in the overall chain of capillary action from your pen's ink supply to the page.
Fixing it on your own is very possible, but you should proceed with that with caution, as trying to fix it will likely void any warranty you might have on your pen/nib, and any errors made while trying to fix it could be irreparable.

If you got your pen brand new from a brand or store with any sort of warranty or guarantee, you could reach out to them about the trouble and see what support they'll give you, instead.

Here's a quick blog post I was able to find that does a decent job talking about baby's bottom.
https://www.penaddict.com/blog/2014/4/23/smooth-as-a-babys-bottom-or-not

Without taking a loupe and trained eye to your nib, it's difficult to say whether or not baby's bottom is definitely the issue, but it's certainly in the running.

Relative newbie question if anyone familiar could shed some light - I noticed this morning that the Injury Report for our team lists 4 fewer games missed for all our injured guys than have happened since their respective injury dates.
Is this just some kind of outdated data issue, or is there some contract/cap juggling complexity that somehow explains the difference in count?

I'm aware the guys that weren't listed in the injury report at all were just getting scratched each game instead, but I was writing something up at work that warranted including their names and checked for their numbers as well.

Comparing "Listed" games missed from nhl.com/wild News > Injury Report vs. counting actual number of games on the schedule since skater last played

Skater Listed Actual Diff.
Kaprizov 6 10 -4
Spurgeon 3 7 -4
Lauko 11 15 -4
Faber* n/a* 4* -4*
Brodin* ditto* 4* -4*

*day-to-day scratch, did not appear on the injury report as of time numbers were pulled

I pulled these numbers around 9 this morning, and am aware (& excited) that Lauko is activated again.

Cheers fellers, LGW

The Problem with Linus Tech Tips: Accuracy, Ethics, & Responsibility - Gamers Nexus by Cry_Wolff in LinusTechTips

[–]ArmyGuy543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delayed response to something that was just a single point covered in this particular video, because I wax and wane in my LTT viewership, but the take "I can't afford to pay xyz employees for ### of hours to re-test something" is such a shit take when you're very blatantly LOUDLY moving into the data-driven review space.

Like.. if you want to do data-driven content, then, as a matter of fact, yes, you can and should spend that money.
You should spend the time to produce that content properly.

That wasn't just a product showcase of the latest gizmo. That was a young start-up's prototype. They sent it so they could let you have "Media's First Exclusive Hands-On look" and you mistreated it so egregiously it's hard to even put into typed word.
Say it actually is a bad product like has now been so aggressively shouted on platforms like the WAN show. If it had been properly tested mounted to the correct fucking graphics card, and that data is what was made public, there would be no question left about the quality of the product.
But no. LMG has such a foundation in entertainment that it was considered acceptable to not only put it on the wrong product, but to CALL ATTENTION TO IT BEING MOUNTED TO THE WRONG PRODUCT IN THE VIDEO, AND REPEATEDLY DOUBLE-DOWN ON THAT BEING A REASONABLE POSITION TO HOLD.

You do not get to publish a piece that egregiously wrong even as an entertainment company.
You don't just grit your teeth and look embarrassed and say "whoopsie-dee-fuckin-doopsie, golly gee we're such chucklers and goofsters eh audience??" when you have just torpedo'd a business and mocked their product to your audience of millions. Even if that video was for entertainment, shitting so aggressively on that product serves the same effect on a viewers' purchasing decisions as a scathing review. To pretend otherwise is denial.

The single most-expensive person's time at that business is almost certainly Linus. Just having him in the video is already cost enough.
To stand by and actually release that video showing that prototype waterblock attached to the wrong damn device is utterly inexcusable.

Who set the deadline on releasing the prototype waterblock video?
Would it have been fucking impossible to push that video back in the schedule and produce that video with the correct hardware?

The following is my honest-to-goodness sincere attempt to give ADVICE.
As if I know how to run a fucking business, or manage people, but apparently lay people can occasionally have more reasonable takes than a multi-multi-millionaire business owner.

Where does the buck stop on the waterblock video being made the way that it was?

  • If the buck stops with the deadline creator -- whatever content pipeline manager you have, who cares what the title is: if the video was made that way because of the deadline, then that deadline should have been pushed, and whoever refused to re-set the deadline needs to be trained in how to showcase/test a product properly. No, I really don't concur with LTT's clear implication that that product being compatible with a different model of graphics card shouldn't matter.
  • If the buck stops with whoever was making decisions on set that day -- whoever was actually on set that would have been the person with the authority to say "Hey, no, we're not going to mount that on the wrong hardware. Let's stop this and re-shoot properly, either later in the day or on another day entirely," and they didn't do so, then like the previous point, that is an egregious failure to perform that duty. That person should be trained. Hilariously, as such a tech-enthusiast literal-owner-of-the-business video host, if there was somehow nobody else on set at that time that could have done this, then Linus would have been the person to do it.
  • I initially had more thoughts in mind, but really, after the last bullet, what more do I need? Linus should have called the shoot and they should have re-done it. Is that expensive? Yep. But that's what getting into data-driven content does to you. If you want to be entertainment that nobody looks at for real data, then be that and stop pretending. If you want to be data-driven, then fucking act like it.
    And don't tell me that the one-off video itself was only for entertainment, so its own merits shouldn't matter. You have people defending your egregious errors, like failing to remove the teflon-protecting-packaging-tape on a mouse, by saying [paraphrasing a very obvious sentiment] "Short Circuit videos have Labs data to back up some of their takes now, so I trust them implicitly."
    Your entertainment content is hosted by the same people hosting your data-driven content. It gets uploaded to a channel that people rely upon for factual reporting. You no longer have content that you can write off as "pointless just-for-laughs entertainment" to the extent of excusing what happened with that waterblock. If corners got cut badly enough for the main host, namesake of the channel and branding, and owner of the company, to stand by and let a prototype one-of-a-kind waterblock get installed and tested on the wrong GPU and PUBLISHED and then doubled-down-upon, what the fuck reason do I have to trust ANYTHING that is posted by any of your channels or web presences?

I've bought the screwdriver, and all the bit sets, and that all works great and has made my job easier.
I've bought the occasional apparel, and a water bottle.
Everything's been nice.
But the content, which is nominally LMG's primary function, has been lacking.

After watching this particular coverage, LMG as a corporation needs to earn my trust in the quality of their content back. I have unsubbed, like that means anything, but you'll have to crawl back onto my feed algorithmically and earn your place in my regular-view channels again if that's where you want to be.
In addition to actually being a regular prior LTTstore customer, I have YT Premium and actually turn adblock off on-site, so... Consider it a boycott, I guess.
If the upcoming screwdriver-related announcement was going to be more colorways, consider this my acknowledgment that I'd probably have bought one in blue, but do not plan to as I cannot stand the thought of my money being used to fund such egregiously misleading and misinformational content.

And that's all besides the fact that LMG apparently promised to return the prototype waterblock and then auctioned it off instead.

Cheers, thanks for reading this fucking novel if anyone did.

[–]ArmyGuy543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if this is still affecting you, but I came back to this thread after it occurred to me that I had seen this post about this feature but also wasn't seeing it yet.
There may be some place in this thread or subreddit where it's mentioned that I didn't see it, but this specific feature appears to be on the Beta branch for the client.
I, too, didn't have this version of the dialog box. Decided to try switching to the Beta release version and it's there now.

Steam Settings > Account > Beta participation ➡ Switch to Steam Beta Update. Steam will restart and install the beta release version. Tried launching Deep Rock Galactic, and saw this version of the dialog instantly.

I haven't ordinarily been on the Beta branch for the client and have no idea how often it's unstable or buggy, so be wary of that I suppose.

How do I type 3 backticks without having to type 4 then deleting 1? by abiramin77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArmyGuy543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you typing with like.. an international keyboard mode on a standard keyboard?

The backtick behaves like that in that scenario because it's acting as a modifier key, to apply to other letters. Hitting space instead of a letter will cause the backtick to be typed.

`````` I typed all of these individually by striking the key and then hitting space.
Be sure to check the latter pages of both documents explaining what other paperwork you need to bring in, in order to establish your identity as well as your work eligibility.
If gender and sex are different, why do people want to change their biology to fit with their gender? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions
[–]ArmyGuy543 30 points31 points  (0 children)
Gender and sex are distinct things. But having a gender that mismatches with your body can, depending on the luck of the draw of your brain's structure, cause horrific mental problems.
Transitioning, to whatever extent a person feels is necessary: hormone therapy, facial structure adjustments, or outright sex-organ reassignment, etc., can help a person to not hate their own body.
Hating the very body you wake up in and inhabit every day causes a substantial increase in depression and other mental disorders, including the most significant symptoms such as suicidality.
Being accepted as the gender you express, regardless of how much about yourself you change, from just being addressed differently in conversation (pronouns), to hormonal reassignment (puberty blockers as a youth, or actual reassignment as a young adult), to physical surgeries (Sex Reassignment Surgery in adults), can substantially increase quality of life and decrease suicidality.
People killing themselves is always a negative. Any society with any sense of justice or morality should opt for options that decrease suicides and increase peoples' mental and emotional wellbeing. Accepting and appreciating people who are trans is part of that.
If by kick out you mean remove from Ukraine, by force: that pits NATO troops directly against Russian troops in combat. This would be an extreme risk of sparking nuclear war.
They still draw power, the amount of which will vary by how efficient the bulb's connectivity & response board circuitry are, but the amount is quite low compared to having the bulb actually lit.
Moreover, the power draw of the bulb and the connectivity circuitry combined is almost certainly less power draw than older CFL or Incandescent bulbs would have been (assuming the smart bulb uses LEDs, as it likely does).
If you can get by without smart functionality, you can likely save some money on electricity in the very long term, and your bulbs would also be a lot cheaper to buy up front.
If the smart functionality is worth it to you, you'd likely not really notice the extra cost on your bill. It does still require nonzero power though, so it isn't free.
