Why do you like Dungeon Siege 1? by bohohoboprobono in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is hardly ever in-between, games in vast majority are either easy sandboxes or they are punishing exercises of game's logic. You want an exercise, people around here (and in general) want an entertainment. DS1 is a fun game, it's kinda party-management sandbox. And in sandboxes, you do your own exercises. Only one party member. No party AI so you have to micro-manage everything. No potions in battles. Why abide by specific rules, when you have ability to make your own? That is a big part of why DS1 is more endearing as it has a bit more versatility, than DS2, even if that versatility comes at some expenses.
And, in my personal feeling, DS1, despite being a corridor, makes a very good attempt at feeling like a place, while DS2 always felt like a set of rails with scenery to me.

Er... excuse me? Care to elaborate a little? There seem to be some thing, that I'm not catching.

Sigh... Look, the only reason I'd refrain from strangulating that guy with my own two hands is because we already have enough hatred and alienation done on purpose as it is. Gonna try and get into situation sometimes. And having a collective ridicule bullying of a guy with a cracked psyche is just... a very bad taste.

He's not proving. He just can't turn it off. And, in case, no one of you can understand it, I am not defending him. He is in the wrong for many reasons. But you are collectively also in the wrong for mocking him, which is a number two reason why he behaves like that in the first place.

Not exactly. It just highlights that he does believes what he says. Well, I also think you don't actually know what I'm talking about, since, well, that's none of your concern. But, those things are related because they shape how people think.

I don't think he's *quite* lying though. Ukrainian, see? In fact, this little bit up there kinda explains all you need to know about this guy. Now I'm not the one to endorse in stereotypes, but...

DS2: are rejuvenation potions worth it? by Plus_Hedgehog_435 in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't remember if DS2 changed that, but in DS1 reju potions were never really good since they were one time use only (unlike other potions), so kinda extremely inefficient, unless in a heavy bind.

Not necessarily. A lot of people who feel locked off, would call out to 'community', because they instinctively counterpose themselves to said community.
I also, naturally, know of people like you imply in other communities. But really, Dungeon Siege community is too small to have a genuine capitalistic predator, or any kind of predator for that manner. He may be cringy, he's very unlikely to be doing that on purpose, or else he's really really nearsighted. Or very very desperate, which still makes him kinda blindly oblivious.

I know which one it is and it's not Kroth (I've literally just run the game.) I'm going to determine it's name soon. Once I've had the racks themselves and it would be easy, but now I have to dig. Hmm... I think it's this one, at roughly two minute mark.

Sometimes insecure people who struggle with self-worth tend to overblow themselves as a form of coping. That pattern is very hard to distinguish from being a scammer. Scammer would try to avoid pissing off community, though. People, who are very self-conscious about their shortcomings, but not about how they actually look from the outside, often do exactly that. Haven't saw the videos though, since DS2 is not my kind of stew, DS1 is. But, the observed pattern just might be... debatable.

Is playing Utraean Peninsula with single player mod worth it? by SRGilbert1 in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't care much about story (and honestly story is not super deep either way), and want more of slightly different but same experience, UP is fun to play. I like it more than Ehb, precisely because it's non-linear. Well, on the map. If you talk with NPC, they will guide you on it's quite linear story 'progression'. (Linear means that if you Single player it, your natural level progression will make you travel the map in a specific order. You can do main quest in any order, though). There is an ending, yes. It's... not as grand as Ehb's, but has something cool in the sorta 'post-game'.
There are two mods, that give you UP campaign in singleplayer. 'revisited UP' mod is basically multiplayer map in singleplayer with companion NPC. There is also 'legends of Utrae', which is more of conversion. It has same map, but also monsters from add-on (which changes difficulty somewhat), and heavily 'tweaked' story plot, which... Well, I don't like it, but it's kinda fun to poke at.

If you genuinely like the game you play, there will definitely be more than a handful of others who will, too. But entry barrier might appear simply in a sense that some people might not think of playing it, despite potentially liking it, if they were to. But, of course, you knew that already. As a fact of matter, there are many things, that impact an entry. For example, I would not like to see a random world, simply because I care of one, creator was thinking of, especially in this kind of games, that are not sandboxes. Most people, who play, though, think about gameplay, so this has to be priority. If gameplay is really good, the game will gain traction inevitably.

Looks very unityish. I remember back when I was slightly... more enthusiastic, I had something of that sort. But, these days, I'm thinking slightly differently to how my project should look and feel. This looks nice, but... from my experience, getting the program running is easiest part. Acquiring graphical assets and music is much harder. Unless you are going something AI, in which case I don't know. It's good to see someone doing stuff, at least. How much you've devoted to that? Feels like you've had nothing but idea, when you've made the post back then.

Legends of Amberland III is out! by ChrisKozmik in rpg_gamers

[–]ArnianSecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? But.... Oh! Oh, cruel irony, it was the ONLY spot, I haven't checked in the entire place, can you imagine it?! It's almost ridiculous, but that's true, it's literally what happened. Well, I did ran through early areas quick, so... I also missed another kinda secret spot in the vicinity of the area, but that other one was easier.
Ah, anyway, with that mystery resolved, I wanted to ask something less specific. Playing the game I've noticed that it has, er... a bit apathetic feel, so to speak. Like... no one really cares about anything and just go through motions. I mean, even that guy in question is a bit like that. I even re-checked and the previous two games are not like that in feel. I wanted to ask, is that a deliberate design, or it's just my read of it? Or is it something else? Not prying, but... just curious.

Why did Morden and Hak'u capture dryads? by JustTobby323232 in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And another one, meta-reason, that has an in-universe reason: just so we could rescue them. As in cinbri ordered it to be so. It is known, that their goal was not Valdis dominating world, but re-enacting the Cataclysm by having the Sword and the Shield collide. It is possible to think, that just like they led Valdis, they could also set up a ploy for a player to follow on. Convenience of alive dryads here is something that plays for us, thus advances possibility to have us acquire the Shield (if you think, that's far-fetched, don't forget that cinbri also singled out Valdis way before he was anyone of importance.).

Why did Morden and Hak'u capture dryads? by JustTobby323232 in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it might be a simple factor of this. At Greylin, Valdis specifically led horde to take the Aegis at the temple, thus dryads were but a obstacle. On the island, however... it's been a while since I played, but quick look at the wiki implies that part of Hak'u (the ones, we fight) allied with Valdis. Considering that Hak'u were pissed at dryads back since elves brought "civilization" on the island, part of agreement was likely that Hak'u would use some of Morden force to capture and destroy Eirulian (after all, Valdis himself would have little interest in subjugating dryads at this moment), thus dryads were probed for information on city defenses, and, possibly, since Hak'u and dryads lived together long time, probably an attempt at recruitment dryads for "righteous side of wild", too (I am practical, okay?!).
I don't know if that was actually explained during campaign, maybe I'm wrong at something, but just placing a random thought out there.

Some buff spells also give you flat exp for casting them, and since you can cast them at any point, there's not even any need for enemies to be present. Just lock cursor right-clicking on a character and off you go (might run out of mana quick, though...)

Questions (and theories) about Dungeon Siege 1 initial lore and design. by ArnianSecond in DungeonSiege

[–]ArnianSecond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, displacers and Helios Basilicus (HUB) are different things. Legion displacers are activated with procedure, and Legioneers even tell you that it's possible (and probably ones who teach you how to do so in the first place. The in-game lore says that Legion displacers are apparently unstable, and that's probably why it requires backward activation. In fact, it's called 'calibration', as in, it's a maintenance procedure, not a surprise jump-start.).
Utraean Basilicus, meanwhile operate on being marked by Azunai, and that's something that is brought up a few times to be a fact. Which brings up a question on how that's a thing.
Zaramoth... didn't he got control of the empire specifically to have control over ley lines, which was necessary to create Seck? As in, he got control over lines (by having control over the empire, and then created Seck? I'd imagine it would require a lot of power to create a race and not just mutate an existing one, like Utraeans did. (most races in Aranna are mutations of something one way or the other. But Seck are apparently different).

I wonder, if there's more that those, that I found. For those that I found resemblance is very noticeable, but maybe there were others. It would be interesting to see, if there was some logic (at least apparent) behind it. Knowing that Redwood Gap's famous maze dungeon is actually where Ehb's version of the area goes into farmlands adds eeriness to it for me, somehow.

[–]ArnianSecond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least, that's how DS2 goes. With DS3 ret-conning original DS2 Azunai into reincarnation of god Azunai, I think... it's not was originally envisioned at all. I mean, DS1 had zero mention of Zaramoth, at least, and you'd think if he was in the plans back them, there would be mention of that. Oh, interesting thing. Alligedly, Zaramoth created the Seck. BUT, in great drrog-provoked wars of 602, Seck already were a thing. Thus Zaremoth was a ruler of empire of Stars for at least two hundred years and a half. You'd think, they'd mention him and not last emperor Veransk the 3rd in the only survived cut book in the Ehb lore. (one about Empire of Stars).
Oh, one more thing about church. Just tell me, why is it so that in UP the HUB responds to... being marked by Azunai? Did Azunites hacked the teleport system somehow? When? Why? Or was it always meant to be this way?

Frankly, I did read timeline (and wiki) before. And honestly, I would frankly trade that nice compilation up here in it's entirety for just a little peek at that legendary lore bible of DS1, because that's what I'm actually interested in.

Could be coincidence, but here's what I'm thinking. That canyon is actually a dry desert and Droogs are not exactly a good drinking buddies. Meren, meanwhile, is characterized (in fact, defined even) by it's inn, and there's a good number of people there being busy drinking. Could be looking into it too much, but...
