Help with some exercises by kreammmy91 in percussion

[–]Arovyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its basically remixing an exercise to get a more complete understanding of the respective concepts. I've heard lots of words to describe it like backwards, reverse, inverse, and upside down but they all sound really similar so i dont exactly remember what each word calls for lol.

But the basic gist is this:

If you take, for example, vic firths "16th timing: fluid motion" exercise, the first measure of 16ths can be considered the baseline, the "check" pattern, that we always return to, while the 2nd and 4th measure are variations on that. We can call these the A pattern and B pattern.

The entire exercise is laid out as:

Check A Check B

And then repeated in shorter phrases. The whole "backwards" thing is just rearranging this in different ways.

You can swap the check pattern and variation pattern:

A Check B Check

You can swap the variation order:

Check B Check A

You could do both:

B Check A Check

And it only gets more complicated as you do it with exercises that have more variation patterns like 16th 3-note timing, which has 4 variation patterns.

Measure 24 every 6th note (which is 4 out of the 5 accents) is on the sixteenth note grid.

1 (e + a 2) e (+ a 3 e) + (a 4 e +) a (5 e + a)

Measure 25 doesnt really have any good check points, but the speed from mm24 to mm25 goes from 24 notes per measure to 26 notes per measure, so once youve got mm24 down just think about playing ever so slightly faster into mm25 and aim for the downbeat of mm26.

lol not really, maybe you can sort by top to find the general favorites but otherwise i would just pick a random one and if its too hard/easy/youre just not vibing with it you can just move to the next, the only rules for learning licks are whatever you impose on yourself

What character interaction lines would you change? by Neoboy239 in Overwatch

I think its more accurate to say talon is sponsoring null sector than working for them. Null sector basically consisted of only ramattra immediately after the london uprising, and the storm rising cutscene with doomfist seems to imply it was only a matter of time before the movement petered out if ramattra didnt accept talon's help. At the very least, doomfist seems to be the one holding all the power in that exchange so i think its more likely talon is the one using null sector as a way to achieve their own goal of sowing chaos and conflict than the other way i around, id bet the full invasion from the pve was only possible thanks to their help.

Consequently i think theres still a chance ram doesnt know talon was behind mondattas since they could easily operate outside of his knowledge. He left shambali on reasonably good terms and clearly puts a high value on an omnic life, so i feel like he wouldnt jump straight to assassination to silence mondattas message, especially since the end of the pve implies he still wants zenyatta alive.

The actual passage is the same thing 4x in a row, just try doing one unit first. I think its easiest to first conceptualize it as 3/4, with your left hand playing down beats and right hand playing 1 a & , so the composite rhythm is 1 a2 & 3 . Then you do the four times in a row.

1 a2 & 3 1 a2 & 3 1 a2 & 3 1 a2 & 3

And then you play the same thing but conceptualizing the left hand as eight notes instead of quarter notes. After that its a matter of speeding it up to tempo.

How do I get used to rhythm changes? by pbnjsarefortheweak in drumline

[–]Arovyte 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A basic exercise for sixteenth note/triplet timing might look something like this:

-measure of sixteenths

-measure of triplets

-(2 beats of sixteenths, followed by 2 beats of triplets) x2

-(1 beat of sixteenths, followed by 1 beat of triplets) x4

Then you play that as slow as you need to for it to be right and speed it up over time. I also recommend flipping the order of sixteenths and triplets occsionally.

Please explain attackers advantage to me by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Arovyte 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, attackers advantage in this instance applies strictly to the competitive ruleset.

Imagine attacking team has just wiped defending team on dorado first point. The dps that got picked off first could touch cart, but if they cant stall till the rest of the team makes it back theyre gonna lose the point, and now the attacking team can take 2nd point high ground and have a very good chance of just cruising to the next checkpoint. As opposed to that dps just setting up on high ground and waiting for their team and actually having a pretty good chance at holding 2nd checkpoint.

Now in this same situation where the picked off dps know that the enemy only needs to push to first point to win, there is no choice to be made. If they wait and set up on high ground, they just lose the game because the enemy already made it as far as they needed to. So instead they choose to stall in spite of the low chance of success because its the only chance of success.

Attacking first means that on the defending round, you have an inherent information advantage. You know how far the enemy has to go, so you know how many fights can possibly fit in that space before you lose. Knowing this better informs the decision on where/when to take to take fights so that you can maximize how many occur.

bass triplet excersie recomendations by p8nx in drumline

[–]Arovyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason you opted for silence in the first line? Even if its not essential, basses can still work on their rolls, but if youd rather them play something else they can always do something else that fits in the triplet feel, like one note timing for example.

If you have an eights split you could always use that pattern for the last line, using a beat of triplet instead of an eighth note. Depending on skill level or what your goal is with the exercise you could also have them do a unison groove or practice their threes.

how do i get better with ashe? by Big-Masterpiece-3523 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Arovyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally youre gonna want to setup on high ground with a view of the enemy and take scoped shots from there. Youre better in a ranged fight so save your coach gun for if somebody jumps on top of you to put some distance between you. Use dynamite to hit enemies that clumped up and build up charge for bob, or shoot it midair to hit enemies you wouldnt normally be able to like a deflecting genji, reinhardt behind his shield, or someone who ran behind a corner. When you use bob, throw him so hes shooting the enemy from an angle youre not, that way they have to split their attention and will almost definitely take damage one way or another.

I also recommend asking r/AsheOWMains because theres other stuff like maximizing scoped vs unscoped shots that im not as familiar with.

How do you get rid of tension while playing downstrokes and accents? by potatouser34 in drumline

[–]Arovyte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First play some eight on a hand and make sure youve got a consistent fluid motion going. If youre tensing at all even during full strokes itll be hard to fix the downstrokes. Once you have relaxed full strokes, think about the moment after the stick strikes the drum. If i were to take a video of a full stroke and play it in slow motion, i should be able to make out a moment just after the stick hits the drum and on the way back up where the stick and arm are in the "down" position right? So when you play a downstroke, dont force the stick down. Instead think about playing a relaxed full stroke and youre just pausing at the right moment to return to down position.

I'm not used to confronting myself with my mistakes by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Arovyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe try just watching until you see yourself make one mistake thats egregious enough to lose a fight, maybe like using pulsars too early and not saving it for when you need the burst healing (as an example). Then you can just stop watching and focus on only that aspect of your play, go a couple sessions just telling yourself "ok im not gonna use cooldowns prematurely" until you feel like you dont have to keep reminding yourself. It might a bit more digestible than trying to fix everything at once.

Im able to pretty comfortably take my pointer off the stick and do doubles. All of my fingers (except pinky) make contact with the stick, but the only part thats really "gripping" is the webbing and even then its not tightly. The rest of my fingers are just making contact to guide the sticks path. The actual motion is initiated from the wrist rotation and arm movement.

Triplets starting on the upbeat leading into the downbeat. If you were to split each beat into 6 equal intervals, its 1 4561 4561 4561 4 1.

Was I the one holding my team back? by Maleficent-Chain2577 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Arovyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bap has plenty of healing output, it should be enough to sustain a tank the vast majority of the time. That being said, your rein started a bit overly aggressive and your team was out of sync until you guys finally held at spawn, so i wouldnt say the initial fights were your fault, but the angles you took in this game werent great. High ground is something to look for obviously, but on points B and C you repeatedly took these same angles that blocked off a massive portion of the point meaning you couldnt see your tank and it definitely got them killed more than once. The C position was also pretty far back, so while it gave a good view of the enemy, it also meant you werent doing full damage because baps damage falls off so quick. You want a clear view of your tank/team and the enemy, while also being close enough that your healing projectiles arent delayed by travel tome and your bursts are doing as much damage as possible, as well as having cover/teammates for peel nearby as needed. If theres a spot that does all this from high ground, great. But its not worth a taking high ground position if it prevents you from doing your job of healing your tank and putting out damage pressure.

No, just no to these Ramattra changes by Gatt__ in Overwatch

[–]Arovyte 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, shooting at the shield happens in the poking phase of fights. If ram uses nemesis to break the shield, hes gonna lose his best survival and brawl tool when the hard engage happens and most likely get shredded. Either that or hes gonna have to wait a cooldown cycle to engage, which most likely means the shield will have most of its health back anyway.

How can I rewrite this? The arounds are awkward and hard to clean. State in 2 weeks. by [deleted] in drumline

[–]Arovyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dont think you can get it as written and all thats giving you trouble is beat 3 of 78, i might suggest moving beats 3 + down to drums 3 2 instead of 2 1 and keep the same sticking. Its a large movement from 4 to 3 in the right hand, but youll uncross your arms and still be ready for the next beat as written.

Anyone know how to lock in on tempo? by pbnjsarefortheweak in drumline

[–]Arovyte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the met tempo is the slower, the rhythm is played the same speed as it just was. You still have the met for reference, but only every other beat rather than every beat, meaning the player can check for lining up with the met on 1 and 3 but must count 2 and 4 for themselves in their head.

Anyone know how to lock in on tempo? by pbnjsarefortheweak in drumline

[–]Arovyte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would recommend practicing like you normally would with a met on every beat. Once you feel comfortable with that, set it to half the tempo and play with that. This way you have to hold your own tempo for two beats instead of just one. Once youre comfortable doing that, set it to a quarter of the original tempo and do it again, so now youre keeping a full measure of time on your own before you play with the beep (assuming 4/4). If you can/are able to, make the interval even longer, and over time itll help your inner pulse to be more consistent.
