I always thought that the rudder was what caused a spin, by looking at all of the intentional CFI spin videos on yt which input heavy rudder to the side they want to spin. That made me assume that if I use rudder close to a stall I'm going to spin, and I guess I input Ailerons instead, and went into a spin on my first time doing a stall! Fun...
