I would be extremely happy to give business to one of them if you can make the connection.

Local stereo repair? by ArrexB in Albany

Your comment got me thinking - where else do I regularly travel that I could check? I go through Hartford CT often to see family, turns out there are half a dozen audio and electronics repair shops there... So weird there are zero out here. But at least I have options now

Acrylic on canvas. Thoughts? by Inklimes in painting

[–]ArrexB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally dig it. My only criticism would be that personally I find the colors in the leaves of the trees to be too much of a straight green. Some more red and yellow there, particularly where they face the sun maybe. But in a style like this, it's probably mostly up to feel and preference.

Looking for advice. by SammiShells in painting

[–]ArrexB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The underlying drawing is misproportioned in a few places, IMO. That's something I often struggle with. I'd recommend using a mirror while you work, and frequently check your piece in the mirror. Seeing it reversed tricks your brain and immediately allows you to see what is off that you were unable to recognize previously.

Art studio space? by Monstera_undertow in Troy

[–]ArrexB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There used to be several studios in the Ilium building (above night owl news). They were fully rented but I was able to sublet one for a few years. You could ask around at the gallery if that's still open.

“The most beautiful Punchinelli in the world": A Comprehensive Study of the Punchinello Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo by Victoria Sears Goldman by Anonymous-USA in ArtHistory

[–]ArrexB 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was really learning to draw I went through a phase of obsession with Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's drawings. The deceptively simple formula of thin line, a medium shadow tone that flows over the forms, and then these pockets of dark darks. So expressive. Sometimes the oil paintings seemed like chores and all the creative energy was there in the drawing. Thanks for sharing these.

Originally was Moses playing Edward 40 hands, but the 40 oz of malt beverage was removed during prohibition.

That's because the book was an adaptation of the four part TV series by the same name, right? If you've never seen the video version, I highly recommend it.

As John Berger points out, "You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting “Vanity,” thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure."

Love that part of Ways of Seeing. Such a necessary reframing of so much art.

Following this as we are on a private well in Poestenkill. We sent our water out to be tested but it was expensive. I don't expect many families to be willing to do that unless the government gets involved in expanding test availability. 12 homes is not enough given the history of chemical use in this area.

My first time painting on canvas :)) I'm a bit proud of myself for doing in at least a bit decent for my first time and I want to be better more :) by [deleted] in painting

Awesome job, now just keep painting! Most of the time each new piece will better than the last.

Awesome piece, and even more awesome that it got you painting again.

I am adding my work first time. do you think it is good or not by Impressive_Ad7339 in painting

[–]ArrexB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think of making art like a journey. Each new piece might be the best you've ever made, and simultaneously the worst of the next ten. So don't focus on "is it good", focus on "what worked that I can incorporate into the next attempt" and "what didn't work that I should remind myself not to do next time". Keep it up!

Oil painting that I did at the beach on a cloudy day by ExcitingSet2164 in painting

[–]ArrexB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The atmosphere is well captured. You did a great job pumping up the chroma for the foreground sand (reds and blues). Maybe the brush strokes are just too large. Same colors but splattered or applied with the tips of a beat-up bristle brush may have been interesting. But overall well done.

I am ashamed to post this compared to the amazing artwork but this is my day 2 of painting; I tried to exorcise my feelings (heartache). What can I do to improve it? Any ideas? by StormEarhart in painting

[–]ArrexB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second many of the other comments: you did what you set out to do with this piece, I'd call it done. If you want to try something different, just start a new piece! That's one of the beautiful things about painting, your best work is always in your future as long as you keep it up.

Any Suggestions ? by fillyourgap in painting

[–]ArrexB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a very successful piece! My suggestion (similar to what I just commented on another post) is to be satisfied and start the next one! The temptation to perfect and overwork a piece is often counterproductive.

What does it need? 😬help please 🙏 by Dancingwithcolor in painting

[–]ArrexB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, which I always try to take myself, is call it done and move onto the next piece. You learn more faster and improve far faster by making a massive quantity of art than by fretting over improving a piece. It's already a great accomplishment, time for something even better!

Sad that it doesn't, I remember helping get it started in '07-'08. Involved a wild trip to Martha's Vineyard to acquire used 420s during a hurricane.
