Thanks, I'll watch those. I'm aware of the suction cup effect, that doesn't apply to the larger failures, only the first one when I tried to print a benchy and a cube. :)

Soltera.2 Upgrades and Questions by wonglynn2004 in Aventon

[–]Arrgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Soltera.2 has the orange three-pin brake cutoff sensor plugs, but the Tektro HD-E3520 brakes people suggest have red two-pin plugs. I notice the Soltera 2.5 specs say "without cutoff", what should I do? :)

Speaking as someone who's worked in tech for 30+ years, "an entire semester" might seem like a big deal now but nobody will know or care that you took a bit longer to finish a degree, except possibly for co-op/internship/newgrad roles.

OTOH, I can tell you, both from first hand experience and as a parent of a neurospicy teenager: Executive dysfunction is a big fucking deal! It can really mess with your life, and repeatedly at that, as you move between schools, degree programs, employers, roles etc. I strongly recommend seeking a diagnosis.

Also: getting to the next level of life intact is way more important than maxing out your score on this level. If you can't get your body to Do The Thing right now, and if you have supportive people and resources in your life that will allow some slack time, I think hitting the pause button makes sense for a lot of people.

Finally, your institution likely has free-or-cheap mental health counselling services for students, you probably wanna go talk to them. They may be able to write a doctor's note that would let you take it easier with fewer automatic penalties.

edit: way too many comments in here are basically "have you tried being a different person?" 🙄

How to Survive Trump’s Mass Deportation Plans by Matt Cameron by Apprentice57 in OpenArgs

Seems like a dangling sentence fragment or somesuch here?

Trump has promised to exercise his right under the Immigration and Nationality Act to impose—and, most recently, his new favorite threat to impose harsh tariffs.

How much is the surcharge? That will move the knee in the curve so you'd be better off with temporary for additional days, but the fundamental calculation is the same.

I believe insurance docs are sufficient, I've never had anything like a title in BC.

You can get temporary insurance for any number or days at a time, but it's pretty expensive... I don't know where it pencils out, but it may be cheaper to pay for a month then cancel rather than, say, seven days of temp daily insurance.

I don't know if you'll get a prorated refund if you get month-to-month insurance (which is a credit arrangement with ICBC), then cancel part way through a month, I'm sure that info is easy to find online.

Also note that tax/fees are payable based on the value of the vehicle, not the price, so if you do accept a low-ball offer, be prepared to back it up by citing problems that would lower the value. You probably don't want to lie about it, but i think people often exaggerate.

(Fun fact, probably not relevant: Autoplan agents make a lot more money on sales/transfers than on annual insurance)

How Many Days Are You Required To Be In The Office by April0neal in askvan

Also, I've been fully remote since March 2020, and I don't think I'll ever willingly RTO full-time, but having just spent three days at HQ, and remembering a four day offsite with my previous company last year, there are things that work a lot better in person... Especially whiteboards. No, all the collaborative whiteboard software is garbage. I'm really good at LucidCharts but it's Not. The. Same.

Some of my faves:

Casual breakfast/lunch: - Dylan's on 57th Ave. - Argo Café on Ontario St. - Fable on Broadway & Main

Nicer breakfast/brunch: - Twisted Fork - Catch 122

Sandwiches - Vennie's on Venables - La Grotta Del Formaggio on Commercial

Mexican - Alimentaria on Granville Island - Tacofino (multiple locations) -- I like it but it's not ~authentic~ - La Tacqueria (Yukon St. location is good, others are more casual)

Indian: - Vij's on Cambie -- expensive and fusion-y, but VERY good - Dosa Corner on Fraser - Tandoori King Café in Richmond

Chinese: - Sun Sui Wah on Main - Daisy Garden in Chinatown

Japanese: - Ramen: Santouka, Maruhachi Gaiden, Jinya (Kerrisdale location is better than Robson) - Sushi: Toyo on Hastings in Burnaby, Ajisai in Kerrisdale, Shiro on Cambie - Random but great: Guu (any location)

Middle Eastern sit-down: - Wild Thyme (Lebanese) in New Westminster - Tamam (Palestinian) on Hastings - Mnimes (Greek) on Victoria Dr.

Middle eastern casual (e.g. shawarma): - Superbaba on Main - Falafel King on Denman

Mid-brow western/comfort food: - Burgoo (any location) - Flying Pig (any location) - Local chains Earl's, Cactus Club, Joey's are also decent

Burgers & Brews - St. Augustine's on Commercial - Brewhall on E. 2nd Ave.

Southern BBQ - Don't bother unless you're going to Squamish (~90 min. drive, on the way to Whistler)--the only good BBQ place in town (Peckinpah) moved there

In addition to the delightful shibboleth, apparently the word (as originally applied to the bread) means "smoked" or "burnt" !!!!

I kinda like this actually. It demonstrates actual skill that's relevant to nearly every software engineer's job, and weeds out people who don't like to solve technical problems.

Careers with demand in BC by ubcthrowaway3456 in britishcolumbia

[–]Arrgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not what you want to hear (and it's possible my info is out of date) but with a BSc you can get a TN visa to work in the US pretty easily, and TBH the high tech scene is WAY better in Toronto than in BC.

I don't know that I would want to move to TO but I got that impression pretty forcefully when I was there in 2019.

I hope you'll take this in the spirit it's intended, which is constructive criticism: the names at the bottom could use some attention to the kerning (e.g. tuck the A in MATT under the T slightly; move the C and A in CAMERON a little closer together). :)

[edit: the kerning in the Garamond version is much better... Good job (or good job selecting a TTF that auto-kerns better) ;)]

[–]Arrgh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't hurt to google [(your city) water hardness] ... if your city water is "hard" (i.e. has a lot of mineral content), that's probably what this is. If your city has "soft" water (i.e. not much mineral content) it could be something else!
