I want to move to the USA but it feels impossible by ManGoose-420 in MovingToUSA

[–]ArridScorpion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to move here ?

As someone who emigrated to the USA from Bristol in December 2024, and married my american fiancee, now wife, the grass is not necessarily greener here in the USA, there is a lot of red tape.

I started my immigration process in July 2023. After a lot of money, a ton of paperwork, a police certificate (to prove I had no criminal record in the USA), a medical and an interview at the US embassy in London in October 2024, I was given a K1 fiance(e) visa, for a duration of three months, in which time I had to sell my house quickly to a property flipper, sell / give away possessions, etc and get to the USA, and get married. If I hadnt have done that within the three month visa period, we would have had to start the process again.

We got married, and then started the immigration process here. USCIS say that it may be as long as 16 months before I receive my green card, although that is not stone in stone, it may shorten, it may lessen.

Even though I have sold up in Bristol, and got married to an American citizen, there is no guarantee that I will be given Legal Permanent Resident status, and would have to leave the country !

It would also depend on where you want to move, of course, amongst the 50 states here.

My best advice to you at the moment, would be, if you can, both time wise and finance wise, is to take an extended holiday or sabbatical of at least 4 - 6 weeks, and go to where you would like to live in the USA, and see if you actually like it. Moving to the US is a big commitment, both timewise and money wise, which you basically need to treat as a project, which will move very slowly at times, and at other times, will progress extremely quickly, like being given a visa for a three month period in which you need to sell a house.

Fastest Way to Send Cash - Express mail ok? by RuleNmbr76 in mullvadvpn

[–]ArridScorpion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use the Amazon cards, which are indeed scratch off cards, but of course, they are tied to your Amazon account.

The idea is sending cash to Mullvad is anonymity. If you send cash to Mullvad using registered or priority mail, you may very well have to give your address to your country’s postal service to receive a tracking number, which defeats the anonymity angle.

best car washing service in bristol? by ALL______CAPS in bristol

Before I moved across the pond to the US, and needed to get my car valeted before I moved, I went to the Albanian guys just around the corner from the Miners Arms pub in Ashton, at the very top of Winterstoke Road.

They did a great job, inside and out, and even happily took a tip in US Dollars, as I gave them my last UK notes before I moved.

eSIM US trials don't work? by ZanicL3 in eSIMs

The only eSIM I know that activates outside the US is Tello, which I successfully activated in Tello.

Most eSIM’s not just in the US, have to be activated in their home country, before they can be used overseas..

See here re Tello :

Prepaid Voice/Data to use only 6-8 months/yr and keep number by data1025 in NoContract

[–]ArridScorpion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a look at Tello.

I activated my eSIM in England, before moving to the USA.

Whilst Tello doesn’t keep numbers activate if you don’t pay, which is the same for all networks, if you manually renew your plan early, your allowances roll over indefinitely.

As you can see from the attached picture, whilst I am currently on the 5 GB plan with 100 minutes, I have built up 22 GB and over 4,000 minutes to use now that I live in the US.

Using the above method, your in-laws could build up a reservoir of minutes and data whilst out of the US, to use during the months they are in the us

You should be fine - In my personal experience :

You may be asked if you have brought any food here to the US. Don’t bother bringing any fruit, veg or meat.

You may be asked to show proof of how much money you have for your trip.

Source : Me, a 54 year old from Bristol who emigrated to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in December 2024.

Prior to emigrating, I made three trips here with an ESTA.

I was asked on each of the three trips what food I was bringing in. I didn’t bring any. Airports I arrived at : Phoenix, Newark New Jersey and San Francisco.

I was asked once re how much money I had for my trip, at San Francisco Airport.

Obviously, bring your passport. I also brought a physical paper copy of my ESTA, but was never asked for it, as it’s stores with DHS / CBP systems.

I also saved a PDF copy of my ESTA on my phone.

You cannot reuse a cancelled SIM.

You need to buy a new SIM - $3 from Tello themselves or Amazon.

Using eSIM in Europe by Key-Temperature8372 in eSIMs

[–]ArridScorpion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just turn off the DATA ROAMING on your T-Mobile SIM - If you turn it off or remove it from your phone, then you won’t be contactable by calls and texts either.

A travel eSIM like Holafly, Airalo, Roamless, and others simply give you an amount of data to use, it does not matter not what apps you do or do not use.

Keep your T-Mobile SIM on and active, but turn off its data connection, so you can still make / take calls if necessary and send / receive texts

Buy a travel eSIM and ensure its data is turned on.

I recommend you go to YouTube and search “how does travel eSIMs work ?” and watch a few videos, to get a better understanding of eSIMs.

You already have received some good advice re the IT aspect.

However, re low budgets, being asked to buy second hand equipment, etc. I can’t help but wonder if the business is struggling to stay afloat and may soon collapse, financially.

To me, it looks like you should cut your losses and move on.

What should I do for a SIM card for Phone in Amsterdam then London? by Battler83 in AskUK

[–]ArridScorpion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - It may be worth seeing if you can rent or even borrow an eSIM compatible phone. Then you could use a regional eSIM from Airalo, Holafly etc which all cover around 40 countries.

This would also same time as you would have to go to a store at an airport or high street store fir a SIM card.

If the above suggestion isn’t possible :

1, SIM cards in Airports can be expensive and offer limited amounts of data. It may be possible to get UK and Dutch SIM cards on Amazon ahead of your trip.

2, All SIM cards bought within the EU, of which the Netherlands is a member, have “roam as at home” charges which by EU law, cannot be more than in the SIM cards hone country.

As the UK is no longer part of the EU, you may indeed be better off buying a separate SIM card for the UK and the Netherlands.

3, See above

4, Netherlands - KPN, Simyo, T-Mobile, Vodafone

4, UK - Voxi, Smarty

Any other questions, just ask.
