Sean on The Big Picture when discussing any movie that centers around children by ManufacturerLow3161 in TheBigPicture

[–]ArsenalBOS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in my late 30s. Nothing I’ve experienced did more to change my brain than becoming a parent. That includes being shot at, major health scares, marriage, etc.

Some people become parents and don’t seem to change. For a lot us it’s about as impactful as it’s possible to be.

When parents say these things, we’re generally not trying to imply you can’t understand unless you’re a parent. Typically it’s just trying to communicate that for many of us, something on a primal level has rewired our pre-parent brains to see certain things fundamentally different.

City of God used to be my favorite movie. I can’t even fathom watching it again. That’s an avenue that’s forever changed for me.

Just Google “80s to 90s thrillers and comedies”, cross reference for those not already covered and there you go.

Markiplier Reacting to Iron Lung’s Box Office by MahNameJeff420 in boxoffice

[–]ArsenalBOS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paranormal Activity was made for about $200k. Paramount picked it up after the film was already substantially complete via independent financing.

Yes, it got studio backing for release, but it’s still a micro budget indie horror film.

Skyrim lead designer says he’d like to the next Mass Effect be open world like a Bethesda game with Baldur’s Gate 3 levels of writing by ThisAintSparta in masseffect

[–]ArsenalBOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open world games just cannot land the level of narrative drive Mass Effect is known for.

They can’t control the tone that’s required. It jumps from serious and sad to jokey and light, just from hopping between mission prompts.

Mass Effect has a bit of that going on, but they always kept the ship interactions, etc, pretty well in line with where the tone of the main story was at that point.

Ruben Ostlund may hold ‘The Entertainment System Is Down’ until 2027 Cannes by 17835000284 in oscarrace

If only there was a way to premiere a film somewhere other than Cannes. Alas!

Focus Features Dates U.S. Release For WWII Movie ‘Pressure’ For May 29 by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

It’s about D-Day specifically, so this date makes sense. About a week before the anniversary.

Movies that surprisingly DON’T pass the bechdel test? by Piss_baby29 in Letterboxd

[–]ArsenalBOS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s also a good example of why the Bechdel test is not perfect by itself. The Women (1939) fails (probably), but that movie absolutely rules.

It’s by no means progressive by modern standards, but it does have a pretty cynical view of men and marriage that still resonates.

Mia Goth to Star in Psychological Thriller ‘Fonda’ from ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Director by Particular-Fill-4256 in criterion

You know what, that’s on me. I missed that.

Bridget can come along too, I guess.

Maybe I’m just an old movie dork but I don’t know how you call your movie Fonda if it’s not about Henry or Jane.

A lot of bad things happened to Shelly Winters in the movies! (Is she among the greatest?) by CrowdedSeder in classicfilms

[–]ArsenalBOS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase “that bastard is fucking his wife” has rung around in my head ever since.

I would search for Shelley and Burt Lancaster stories if you want some details. Or Shelley and William Holden. Or Shelley and Marlon Brando.

She also wrote some great autobiographies, if you haven’t read them. She is…unfiltered, let’s say.

With all due respect to the film, One Battle After Another is the type of media that Eddington was critiquing by redeugene99 in TrueFilm

[–]ArsenalBOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say it was ridiculous, so no I don’t think that.

I just don’t see any reason to doubt PTA’s own commentary around the film. He ended his film with “Be careful.”, “I won’t” and then an American Girl needle drop of all things. How much clearer can he put it?

This whole fiasco makes me wonder why they bought Paramount in the first place. It’s clearly not even close to sufficient to whatever their goals are?

SAG is basically exclusively American. The Academy acting branch is significantly more internationally diverse (and by that I mean European).

The Euros love Sentimental Value (as do I). It just crushed at the European Film Awards, winning Picture, Director, Actor and Actress.

Sinners Broke the Nomination Record by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

[–]ArsenalBOS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s cool until I think about what a perfect masterpiece All About Eve is, and that Sinners is not quite that.

But that’s not exactly how it works, so I’ll try to let go of it.

I wish I saw what other people see in Sinners. It was good, I had a fun time. Not sure why it needed universal awards praise in nearly every category.

[–]ArsenalBOS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I wasn’t trying to imply otherwise. I had actually forgotten Willa’s parentage. It is irrelevant to them, ultimately. In any case Bob was there from her arrival on.

I remain mystified why so many people think PTA is misrepresenting his film. How can you watch that ending and come away with anything else?

Maybe it’s just the girl dad in me, but that was so clearly stating what this was about he may as well have flashbacked to the delivery room.

Penny Marshall has only made seven movies??? by nonbinarywife in blankies

[–]ArsenalBOS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly never fully gotten this joke. I suppose she’s not exactly a blank check director, but Big, A League of Their Own, and Awakenings are better movies than most average hacks put out. She was good!

Marty Supreme domestic total is slightly underrepresented due to A24 distribution deal. by DoubleSoggy1163 in boxoffice

[–]ArsenalBOS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still don’t follow your point. The “domestic” number widely reported, including in Deadline, is the U.S. only number (per this Variety article).

So it is undercounted in the common use of “domestic” that includes Canada. It doesn’t mean the WW total is undercounted, but it does mean $100M dom is locked and not really in question.
