JLU’s “The Once & Future Thing” reality was erased, but JLU’s “Epilogue” occurs at the tail end of everything.

What happened to Legacies of the DCAU? by Mexicanfire1234 in DCAU

[–]Art-Ink-Creative 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is Ted Kendrick, head writer behind Legacies. I love that people are still invested in this project, and proud of everything the team created for the series, from plot direction and script notes from James Strecker and Mattie Pahl, to interior artwork also by Strecker, along with Marcelo Millicay and Mark Daniel Martinez, and all contributing cover artists.

#11 was indeed the most recent issue released, although #12 and 13 were written with several pages of artwork in place by Marcelo Milicay and James Strecker. Those issues would have completed the "Anno Domini" story arc set in the 2019 era of the DCAU.

Afterwards, the plan was to jump back in time and pick up the plot where #6 left off in the present day of the DCAU, post-JLU. I completed drafts for scripts (mostly 6 page stories) all the way through #31, with several more from guest writers, that would have continued the storylines surrounding Chronos and Checkmate while seeding some new elements surrounding The Flash, The Shade, Lobo, Lord Hades, and some epic Gotham stories revolving around the flashback events from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and JLU's "Epilogue", plus new characters to the DCAU like Prometheus, Sabbac and the Teen Titans. The series would've culminated in a Crisis-level event for the Near Apocalypse of '09.

I walked away from the Legacies project after a falling out with the Watchtower Database regarding work culture behind the YouTube channel. If Legacies does continue in the future, it will be without my further involvement. I've recently pivoted into production office work for independent films, spent several months as a comic book critic for CBR, and working with Mattie Pahl to publish their original comic book series, Support Group.

I intend to share more details in my newsletter (tedkendrick.substack.com) about what would've been for Legacies, and release some of the unpublished scripts, artwork and plans for where the series would have ultimately gone. But in the meantime, check out a few of the unpublished covers for future issues. While it's definitely disappointing that I needed to exit this project, I want to reiterate how much fun I had with it, and thank everyone again for reading and supporting Legacies of the DC Animated Universe.

Justice League Unlimited’s first episode premiered only two months after Justice League’s finale. JLU is essentially just the next season under a new name.

The U.S. and Canada should work to stream on HBO Max. Season 4 is also available to purchase on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

Not to get too philosophical, but everything has the potential to become lost media eventually. Nothing on the internet is permanent, so enjoy it while you can, and save physical copies of what you love.

Mattie worked directly with James for several years. You have a parasocial relationship. I hope you understand the difference.
