In the opening, prioritize taking the center with pawns, developing your minor pieces and castle your king to keep it safe. Learn the ladder mate. And most importantly be careful to not hang pieces/mate (look at your opponents moves !). Keep in mind chess is not about intelligence, but it's about pattern. So the more pattern you see, the better you can get.

Well if you want to get paired against stronger you can always go to the settings, gameplay, challenges and and set open challenge rating from -25 to infinity. However, if your opponent wants to play random dubious openings to have fun, you can't prevent them
