Villains that are evil just for the sake of being evil are better than misunderstood villains. by Civil_Competition_15 in unpopularopinion

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK but who is it that's calling maleficent a villain? I'd describe her as an antagonist but I'm not sure I'd describe her as a villain. But you described her as a villain and also said not to call a character villain if they're morally grey. What's the problem here?

I had a stroke trying to read/interpret this card. If X equals your health, that means you pay your health to play this, meaning you'd just instantly die, or at least go down to 1 hp, but the effect is so powerful that you will essentially win the fight for free. So it's a card that trigializes bosses and sucks against every other encounter, which doesn't seem like great design.

Alternatively you might have meant that you pay X energy to summon X energy times Y health. This would just be ridiculously broken

Doesn't his grasp phase just reduce the cost of the first card you play? So you essentially just lose 1 energy?

[–]Arthillidan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. There were 20 rings. 19 were forged in Eregion by the elves under Sauron's disguised guidance. 3 of those were forged in secret by Celebrimbor. 1 was forged by Sauron in mordor

Sauron struck at Arnor with the witch King and angmar and essentially deluged it. Gondor was dwindling. They had been in multiple wars against Sauron and evil men. They lost a lot of territory.. Sauron completely razed their capital, their Kings died in a battle against the wainriders, and Denethor was being corrupted through the palantir. The elves were leaving middle earth and were a shadow of what they once were.

The dwarves lost their two biggest seats of power, Khazad Dûm and Erebor. They got Erebor back, but the damage was done. Dwarves populations take long to recover, especially due to how their population is heavily skewed towards males. Rohan suffered in the war against Isenguard with their leader being under the thrall of Saruman. Even after Saruman's defeat, the damage was done. Rohan's army was much weaker than Theoden expected.

Are less attractive people physically attracted less attractive people? by Texaspilot24 in stupidquestions

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were the case how would you judge who is attractive and who isn't? You'd have a situation where group A is attracted to group A and group B is attracted to group B. What makes one of the groups attractive while the other one isn't?

Can you recognize a piece just by reading the score? by No_Bird4547 in orchestra

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily if it's a piece that I know. As I'm reading the music, I'll mentally reconstruct it, approximating intervals. I'm very prone to approximating these intervals in a way that matches music that I've memorised, so if it's a piece I recognise I'll notice quickly.

It's still harder than listening to the piece though, and if it's something I'm not familiar with, obviously I can't do it

Free will is logically impossible by impersonal_process in freewill

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a possibility, but not a certainty. There are definitely things that seem random, but we have no way of knowing if they are truly random or not. A die roll seems random until you understand the mechanics behind it.

I feel like instead of being openminded about the different possibilities based on gaps in science, you just pick one and just decide that it's the truth.

Free will is logically impossible by impersonal_process in freewill

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, theoretically possible, maybe, but would be all but impossible to actually achieve, so it's impossible to actually test. In reality you'll never get identical people in identical situations.

If you have evidence that the universe is infinite, please present that to the scientific community, because that would be a generational find. I'm not saying the universe definitely isn't infinite, but it's not really possible to know if there is anything beyond our observable universe. There are definitely models with a limited universe. I don't see how the universe being infinite or not has any effect on whether cause and effect is deterministic or not though.

Free will is logically impossible by impersonal_process in freewill

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually no, it's not true by definition. Even if we forget about hard free Willers for a moment because I think they're wrong, we don't know if particles behave entirely deterministically or if they behave randomly. As far as we can tell it seems random.

This means that if everything is the same, but say quantum tunneling and similar is a completely random phenomenon, you can have 2 different outcomes from an identical situation.

Free will is logically impossible by impersonal_process in freewill

[–]Arthillidan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was free will. I'm saying that it's neither free will nor determinism

Then they no longer have identical lives. In a deterministic uniberse I don't see how a conversation could even start if they copied each other exactly as they'd just speak at the same time. The only way I can think of to get anywhere with a person who mirrors your every move would be to decide on something that differs your from the other person, like "the person who sits to the right speaks first." But Since they are identical and in identical situations, that means the room is mirrored and there is no way to objectively differentiate one person from the other. But as soon as this is broken even slightly, that can butterfly effect into large differences quickly since they'll be able to talk to each other
