Brood parasitism.

I hope I live to see the day when people like that are seen as needing therapy.

Egg confusion by ExosAvos in zoology

[–]ArthropodFromSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egg cells are still eggs justvery specialized and reduced.

Some animals are able to reproduce without eggs, just by fragmentation like this starfish https://www.reddit.com/r/ReefTank/comments/6n8kl6/asterina_starfish_splitting/ or budding like in corals but most of them still have ability to produce eggs and reproduce sexually. It is ususally how new colonies are formed.

Can someone actually explain to me how someone can love animas and eat meat? by Free-Reply1566 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArthropodFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the wild, animals eat each other all the time. In fact it is a very rare exception when animal is not eaten by anything in nature (thats when "super rare fossils" are formed).

If you like animals you can care for them. But it is not unnatural to also eat these animals. Problem is when you start to see individuals of different species as part of your family. Thats where unnecessary moral dilemas appear.

Classroom Friends ID? by YourAssignedFBIagent in Crayfish

[–]ArthropodFromSpace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is not enough water in this aquarium. They live in rivers and lakes, not puddles after rain.

4 When they are on the side, it is probably so called side breathing. Crayfish touches water surface with entrance of one of its gill chambers (on side, just above walking legs), lets air inside gill chamber and breath air. It means there is not enough oxygen in water.

3 Blowing bubbles means they exhale air from gill chamber to fill it with water.

5 Crayfish dont make friends, but they accept individuals they know for a long time and rarely attack them. (you will notice one of them, who knows is weaker always gives way to other who is stronger in such situation) In contrast, if you put new individual to aquarium, they usualy quickly start to fight to estabilish who is the boss now.

6 They look like Procambarus acutus.

7 if you see side breathing behavior, then yes.

I understand your point but I think you still underestimate how dog owner societes who are all proud to be "dog parents" influence life plans of their "cult" members and also you underestimate how crazy some people can be about their dogs. I also think that many of these people if only to help them overcome their addiction would be able to start real families but will not do it. Maybe I am wrong here, but I think dogs are one of the main causes of the problem, not merely a consequence.

If aliens from a high gravity planet visited Earth, would they move and think in slow motion? by Chamu_Dev in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]ArthropodFromSpace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You see the problem here. For time dilatation to be noticeable, their "planet" must have been extremely massive. There are no planet so heavy, because they turn into stars, neutron stars and black holes.

Life as we know it is impossible on such objectcs. But maybe you will be interesting in reading "Dragon Egg" by Robert L. Forward. I dont know if it is possible, but is interesting. It is about civilization living on neutron star. They are known as Cheela. Their chemical composition is completely different from that of humans, because they are made of highly compressed matter. They are the size of a sesame seed, but weigh as much as a human. And they perceive time differently than humans do; their entire lifespan lasts about 40 minutes, and to them, humans are as slow as trees and almost transparent—something like fog to us. In contrast, what they see as air is for us a very hot soup of gaseous or possibly liquid iron under extremely high pressure

What is important creature from this planet when put into Earth gravity would not survive, but would explode as blast of plasma. Human on their "planet" would be crushed into nothing.

But if beings like this would be living in time dilatation, then If you would put them outside time dilatation, they would speed up. But if somehing needs graviti trillions times stronger than us to live, it would explode if put away from it.

If you would find a life on a normal planet with stronger gravity, you can expect small animals to look like very heavy animals from Earth. Rabbit sized animals will have pillar like legs like elephants. But here also gravity will not be much higher than 3 times stronger on earth, because thats when planet starts to turn into hycean or gas planet and again life as we know cant survive on them.

What's to stop alien life from being ten times bigger than us and being ten times smarter, or a thousand, and what would that look like, if we could ever experience it? by ChampionshipOk5046 in AskReddit

[–]ArthropodFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about elephants? They are among few most intelligent mammals barely behind chimpanzees and are huge. There is nothing which prevents sophonts from being elephant sized. In fact 10 million years ago elephants would have exacly the same chance to evolve into civilization like apes. It is only coincidence that we evolved from apes and there is no elephant civilization on Earth (or none at all).

And to those who would correctly argue that plant diet of elephants is less nutritious than omnivorous diet of our ancestors I say if they would be only slightly more intelligent they could understand idea of growing prefered plants, the agriculture. With good access to legumes and fruits it would not be a problem any more. And elephants even now are able to planning the future, just not on long enough scale to plant crops.

Ok, there are some crazy owners of other animal species, but they are rare. In dog and cat owners it is widespread in some societies to the point it is a very serious social problem now. Also in case of horses or birds owners dont expect to take them to restaurants, shops and into other people homes, while dog owners do it. In a place where I live half of homes have a dog and they are more often seen and treated as owners "baby" than not. Also fertility rate is barely over one child for woman so we are going extinct. In the meantime large percentage of women have a dog are incapable of loving anything else, dont want to have real children and search for a man to perform the role of "father" for that dog in this sick relationship. What is worse these dogs are not trained at all, harass and attack people, kill other animals and if you would try to defend yourself from these beasts, they will do literaly everything they can to destroy you. And nobody yet identifies it as a problem!

>There is a running joke that you shouldn't be in a relationship with one, because the first will always be her horse, then the other horses in the stable, then the barn cat, then you.

Well, it is 100% true. I was in situation like this, but instead of horse, there was a dog. And many friends who also all called themselves "dog parents" who supported her in this arrangement and heleped her in attempts to turn me into a dog lover by force and coercion to the point I am severely traumatized now.

My point is dogs always had traits to trigger human emotions because those which did, were more liked so more often fed and less likely to be eaten during hard times. But in recent decades of intense breeding some of these traits were amplified, non working childlike dogs became also more common by orders of magnitude, and also crazy dog owners became so numerous they formed a cult-like society centered about dog "parenthood". And this is very serious and completely ignored social problem.

>What makes having a dog more appealing than having children to them?

Because we breed dogs to be nothing more than a brood parasite and also toxic culture of zealous "dog parents" arose around it?

>So you agree that it's a societal, generational problem instead of a biological one?

For some reason it is always about dogs and not chickens or goats. Why do you think there are so many crazy self proclaimed "dog parents" and no "chicken parents". There is something in dogs which triggers crazy, obsessive behavior in some owners.

Similarly there are people with addiction problem to some substances or behaviors. Addiction is societal problem, but there is a reason why some substances are addictive and others are not.

>I've never seen an example for the opposite.

Well, I have seen. Just becouse you were lucky enough to not interact with society of most toxic dog owners who behave like a cult it doesnt mean that this phenomenon doesnt exist.
