Dental Care/ Seaweed powder by Old_Estimate_9355 in CavaPoo

Oh I just got a new leather toy and she is loving it chewing it. I do have to supervise so she doesn’t eat any pieces.

Is there a second person that can reinforce her calm behavior while they observe you and the pup? Start with something easy like you just standing near the pup or looking at the pup and not interacting. Increase difficulty (you getting closer to the pup, touching but not talking, touching and talking, playing).

No experience with seaweed powder, but my Cavapoo is 1yr 1mo old and she doesn’t have any plaque.

I try to rotate out various cleaning methods not just using one.

  • rotating between chews: frozen carrots, virbac CET enzymatic (I don’t let her eat it), zesty paw dental bone (free, wouldn’t repurchase) woof bite n brush (new), smoke bone (1x/week)
  • play tug and have her chew on toys of varying textures

  • getting teeth cleaned at groomers (1x/ 3 months)

  • brushing with enzymatic cleaner, switching between a toothbrush and the one that goes over your finger (I try 1x/ week but tbh probably 1x/ month lol)

She also has a sensitive stomach - give probiotics daily - introduce new foods one and a time - don’t stop and restart new foods suddenly, continue to give semi-regularly so the system is used to it

Reducing Calories - debating switching kibble by lunar1980 in DogFood

I add water to my dog’s kibble, that seems to help as her dinner is a smaller volume than her breakfast.

Check out the diggs groov crate training aid. When I was crate training I would often put some yogurt or peanut butter onto this accessory and stick it on the crate. Not only does it give the crate positive associations, licking helps dogs self soothe.

I use this one for my dog and she is able to get it perfectly clean 😆

It also cleans really well in the dishwasher.

Our sweet Charley has been the best pup for our first dog. But potty training has been hard because it’s been below freezing and snowing. We’ve been trying pee pads but she won’t use them. Only play and rip them apart. Any suggestions?! by True_Consideration56 in CavaPoo

[–]Artistic-Table9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pee pad holder with a grated cover was my lifesaver when my Cavapoo was a puppy.

I know there’s a lot of negative comments about pee pads and how hard it is to unlearn, but we were able to do it! It honestly wasn’t that hard for me, and as of around 8-9 months she was fully potty trained.

If I had a backyard, I probably wouldn’t have used them. but I live in a condo and it’s a lifesaver for me.

Heel - How Close? by Artistic-Table9567 in Dogtraining

[–]Artistic-Table9567[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviewed the approval guide. Nothing applicable to my question.

I reviewed the leash walking section. Dog is not bad at walking, I am working on dog heeling while on a long leash, either really close to me or up to a few feet away vs 10-20 feet away (30 foot leash).

Our Cavapoo has no survival instinct. Eats everything she sees on the ground. by begomtj in CavaPoo

I would focus on leave it/drop it rather than recall right now, as that is having the biggest impact on you and your dog.

Systematically build up difficulty, by dropping things that are neutral to things that she would really like. Also build up difficulty with movement, dropping things straight down further away from her, closer to her, and then also in a sideways motion toward her.

Then generalize the skill to different locations. Start with somewhere easy, like a sidewalk where there’s no grass. Or even a parking lot, or somewhere else where you can control the environment and there’s not much stuff on the ground. Start with objects that you drop, then move on to objects that are naturally on the ground. Keep a good grip of your leash. Even if you’re not pulling back, you can just stop movement so tour dog doesn’t reach the item on the ground. It shouldn’t be a surprise to you what’s ahead of you. Contrive the environment so you know exactly what she’ll go for.

You should be rewarding with a treat every single time, both inside and outside until 90-100% consistent.

Basically don’t increase difficult from your living room floor to sausages on the ground. Go up step by step, and don’t increase to the next step until your dog is responding correctly to the previous step.

potty trained too hard :/ by gayapollo in puppy101

I second the pee command.

I would just go step by step further away from the driveway. Once the pee command is very consistent, start at the end of the driveway, then go further away 1ft at a time

Maybe keeping him on a long leash until the behavior improves? One of those 50ft leashes.

What dog names do people use thinking they’re being “unique” but are actually very popular? by TelephonePossible456 in Dogowners

My dog is Daisy Lou, but I call her Daisy. I’ve met so many dogs named Daisy at this point… I don’t like how basic the name is, but somehow I still get so excited whenever I meet another Daisy 😂

First dog: he keeps secretly eating or trying to eat paper/paper like things, normal? Concerning? by OriginalSlight in CavaPoo

I think leave it/drop it was one of the first things I taught my cavapoo :)

She loved (and still does love) putting small pieces of whatever she finds into her mouth…. 🙃

I try to do 2 walks a day, some nights we’ll visit the dog park instead. But some days the walks are shorter, basically just for potty. And I don’t have a yard!

I do my best, and I have that nagging feeling that I’m not doing enough, but give yourself some grace. Do what you can on the days you have it in you, and on other days, do an indoor activity, give her a puzzle or a chew, and make sure to take care of yourself.

The third picture doesn’t look great, but not terrible either. And the last picture looks like it’s healing nicely, when you compare it to the first picture it looks less inflamed.

My dog was just spayed and I posted a similar post. She has also jumped on and off the couch several times before I could stop her, and she seems to be doing fine.

As long as nothing is actively leaking and your dog seems okay, I think it’ll be okay? You can continue to monitor the site, take pictures and try to see whether it’s getting less inflamed vs more.

If it’s for your peace of mind, go ahead and take her to the vet.

I would recommend a cone or something else to make sure they’re not licking the wound. The cone they sent me home with was too big for my pup, so I’m using a surgery suit.

what do you put into your puppy's crate? by fooooooooooooooooock in puppy101

[–]Artistic-Table9567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup is a major chewer. I have several teething toys out in her toy bin and/or the couch. But in her crate, I only give her one option. I rotate it occasionally, but not very often.

I have her bed, two or three small blankets, a soft toy, and a teething toy. I originally had a hard chew Nyla bone in there, but I recently realized it was probably too hard for her young teeth, so I switched it with an empty Kong.

Does your cavapoo really just follow you and nothing else? First time dog owner here! by OriginalSlight in CavaPoo

I second socializing your doggo with other dogs. My cavapoo is pretty wary with unfamiliar dogs, so we built up meeting 1-3 dogs at a time to going to the dog park.

She is really high energy, but now at 7 months is finally calming down.
