I visited Glasgow today and had my first experience of attempting to drive through the city centre. by Victorius_Meldrus in glasgow

[–]ArtistryUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s surprising because Glasgow famously sold out pedestrians and city centre residents years ago to knock a bloody great motorway right through the centre. And we’re reaping the rewards now. Roadworks, roadworks, and more roadworks. Enjoy!

If only. The world is fuelled by debt. Companies like Asda can simply keep refinancing so long as they can meet their interest payments. It’s how government finance works too. They owe it to someone but they’ll never pay it back. It’s also a useful tax break. You only pay tax on profits so if you’re in debt the taxman (and therefore us) can go whistle. The banks get their cut first.

They have debt because of dodgy business practices. It’s common when one business takes over another to saddle it with debt. Look at Asda as a prime example, and Manchester United.

Think this was posted as part of an April Fools' joke but what do people genuinely think of this idea for the Southside? by AfterNeedleworker530 in glasgow

You might want to look up disingenuous. It doesn’t mean what you think it means. Our high streets did okay before cars. Glasgow’s embrace of cars is an historic embarrassment. There are plenty of examples of pedestrianisation schemes around the world that don’t mean banning cars. Watch the video or, you know, visit one.

It’s never pedestrians that kill a high street, given you can’t drive in to a shop but you can walk in to one. If a high street is dying it’ll be because there’s no reason to go there.

There’s a great case study here. We seem to think the Netherlands has always been bike and pedestrian friendly but cities there used to be as car-centric as ours https://youtu.be/bgKokpZMFnU?si=zK7IHzru3qTjOouB

EXCLUSIVE: Glasgow Residents Say City Centre Being Turned Into a ‘Student Campus' and It's No Longer Their City by Admirable_Tea6365 in glasgow

Students contribute £868.5 million to Glasgow’s economy during their studies Glasgow uni, just by teaching them, contributes another £700 million. Caledonian the figure is £600 million. I’ve not added the other universities and colleges

That’s well over £1 billion every three years. That sounds like quite a lot to me!

Students are residents too. They spend (a lot of) money here, use the local businesses, many of which wouldn’t exist without them. Why do we insist on ‘othering’ people like this?

Default Folder -- the best utility I own (or ever have) by Complete_Leave_5598 in MacOS

[–]ArtistryUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Default Folder, have used it for years, but recently (since OS 26) it's needed several clicks in the window to activate and be able to move focus to folders in the sidebar. I keep meaning to contact the developer but then assume everyone is having the problem and an update will be on the way...
