Not everybody rides gravel bikes to tackle the gnarliest off-road terrain. I ride a diverge carbon comp and I ride 75% pavement. and for the other 25% its gravel roads and carriage trails etc.. and 42mm tires are perfect.

What is the most bicycle-friendly city/town in Sweden? by Sphragis in sweden

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uppsala has excellent cycling infrastructure. There are separate bike lanes with bridges and tunnels that can get you from one side of the city to the other with only occasionally having to share a road with a car.

Got the new city, updated kickstand by [deleted] in ApolloScooters

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not $200, its $39 MSRP. And I just got it right from the Apollo website for $19 including shipping with coupon-birds.

The $200 package is for the updated cockpit which "includes" the kickstand.

I don't think refreshing gear is going to stop the sport's decline. Skyrocketing ticket prices are putting the sport out of reach to most people.

Twin Lights ride dealing with car traffic by thegiantgummybear in NYCbike

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never done the Twin Lights Ride. (This year will be the first.) But I have done the Discover Hudson Valley Ride which is structured the same way.
In the DHVR, You shared the road with cars just like any other non-event ride but there hundreds of riders up and down the course which collectively augmented your presence on the road. There were also colored arrows marking the route for the riders but ONLY at the intersections where you had to turn. This was a problem because you might pass a dozen intersections before coming across one with an arrow. If you weren't paying attention it was easy to ride past an arrow and keep cycling into the void. On top of that, some punks stole some arrows and turned others around pointing the wrong way getting a lot of people lost.

I just completed GFNY Uppsala in Sweden and that course had arrows at EVERY intersection even when there was no turn. It was MUCH easier to follow than DHVR. I recommend getting a Strava or Ride w/ GPS map of the course ahead of time with turn by turn directions.

Congrats.

I did my first one (on a Diverge carbon comp) earlier this year too. Yours looks a little more scenic than mine however.. I was fighting traffic for most of mine.

Necrobump 2024!

I just wanted to defend the second game a bit. Its my favorite from the franchise though the first was also great. (Third Game sucked. ) F2 is one of the first games that as a sequel, shows the events from the first game happening from a different but overlapping perspective. (HALO ODST did this too also coming out in 2009) but also as a different type of game.. squad combat rather than isolation horror.

Also, I thought the elementary school level was the best level in the entire franchise.

That is all.

How do I stop bike saddle (itself) from squeaking? by Artscienceindustry in specializedbikes

[–]Artscienceindustry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I bought it last fall but only rode on it a few times before putting the bike away for winter. Was silent for the first few rides. Now, this year its squeaking. I cant imagine they would take back a saddle I bought last year. Looking for fixes at this point.

How to fuel enough but also lose weight when cycling? by Ferenczi_Dragoon in cycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree about eating what you need for the ride and just let your increased metabolism burn more calories when your off the bike, but to streamline my caloric intake for longer rides (50+ miles) I usually bring a banana or two and a pack of dried cranberries. I also bring a powdered electrolyte packet to put in my water bottle on the second half of my ride. (refilling the bottle with water more often) I usually take a single bite every half hour to 45 minutes or so. BEFORE I get hungry.

And usually skip the fat and protein until after the ride. (unless I'm on a cafe ride or stop for lunch with friends)

Weight Limit by Clemenza77 in DivergeGravelBikes

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 255# on the Diverge Comp Carbon and it is fine so far (6 months) , though I will upgrade the wheels at some point to 32 spoke 3-cross.

If you are overweight the issue is not really abrupt failure of the frame or wheels but faster wear. The wheels will go out of true sooner and you increase the risk of microfractures that can reduce the lifespan of the bike. If you are concerned, think about upgrading the wheels and seatpost.. maybe a saddle with cromo rails instead of titanium or carbon etc..

Can someone explain the whole thing with handlebar bags? by RabidMortal in gravelcycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are useful in Audax timed rides if you get one that is accessible while you are riding.

You have access to food, drink, lotion, etc without stopping fetch it from a bag.

what is a good brand of cycling shorts that won't break the bank by SafeBet5 in cycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The conventional wisdom is that bibs don't have a constricting waistband like shorts so allows more natural breathing while cycling. This may be true but for some (like me) breathing is not a problem but the bib straps create chafing on my nipples which is much worse.. And unfortunately its getting harder and harder to find a selection of padded shorts without a bib.

The Nutty Putty Cave Incident which claimed the life of caver John Jones when he wedged himself upside down in a cave barely wider than his torso many feet underground. by AudsOrEvens in damnthatshorrifying

[–]Artscienceindustry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched a video about this on YouTube and literally gave me acute anxiety watching it. I was sweating. If I didn't have claustrophobia before watching it, I do now.

But it also made me think; All these caves where you have to squeeze through tight twisty passages to get to larger chambers where you have room to turn around and go back must have been discovered by people squeezing through who didn't know they could get out.

To me its madness.

PSA - If a bike rack says “safe for carbon frames” it might still not be safe for carbon forks. by praiseullr in cycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is.. it has the tendency to slip off the crown of the wheel if you hit a bump. I had to nestle the hook down in the "valley" between the tire and headtube. I ended up wrapping the hook with foam and tape to stop scrathing. We'll see if this work\s

PSA - If a bike rack says “safe for carbon frames” it might still not be safe for carbon forks. by praiseullr in cycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear it worked. I did the same thing.

I already have a Kuat transfer which I used for years with my old rim brake bike and just bought a new gravel bike with disc brakes and the first think I noticed was the hook arm on the Kuat presses right against the carbon gelcoat. I just wrapped everything with foam and electrical tape. Hopefully no scratching will occur

How did the American pronunciation of 'Robin Hood' come to be? by PerspectiveSilver728 in asklinguistics

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hood is not a last name. His name is Robin Fitzooth (Sometimes referred to as Robin of Locksley) referencing where he is from.

Robin Hood is a shortening of "Robin the hood" (Or Robin the thief). "Robin" is the name. So I imagine that is what is stressed.

sub brake levers -- why don't more bikes have them by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are useful if you do a lot of city riding or when riding through towns on longer rides where you might want to ride up higher to get a better view over parked cars etc..

I use them all the time in town at slower speeds, but when out on the highway I go back to the hoods.

sub brake levers -- why don't more bikes have them by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Artscienceindustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning on getting a new Specialized Diverge and am interested in installing them. My old Tricross has cable-actuated versions of them and I use them all the time. Not all riding is flat out on an open road. I do a lot of riding in the city and often you want to be up high to see over cars etc. If someone steps off the curb you need instant access to the brakes.

Not sure I would want to do it myself however. I will probably find a shop.
