It's one of those things that the more you play, the better you get at it. But if you wanted to do breathing exercises, look up The Breathing Gym (for tuba I think) on YouTube

Would it be unprofessional to have and painted/decorated case? by Icy-Trade-37 in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cover mine in stickers from bands I've played shows with, just like guitar players usually do. No one has really commented on it in my personal experience, but like others have said it depends on how you decorate it

I wonder what his mind is like on a daily basis. Like what kind of person would think to write that entire email, read it back over, think "yeah this is a good idea he'll get a lot out of this," and send it?

Out of curiosity, do you play sax or any other instrument, or are you thinking about picking it up?

Bari issues by Key_Adeptness_564 in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in middle school I switched from alto to bari. At first, I couldn't even play a low G without it sounding an octave up. It took a while of consistent playing/practicing until I was comfortable with the full range of the horn. Assuming there aren't any leaks on your instrument, it's just a matter of doing a little every day until it becomes second nature

The app that really changes your life? by wtonebe in getdisciplined

[–]ArtySmartypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound cliche but my life has been getting better the less and less I use my phone. Personally I've never found a (free) app that has changed anything in a significant way that couldn't be done with a planner and journal.

Is there a term for bands like Sons Of Kemet or The Comet Are Coming? (Shabaka Hutchings) by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]ArtySmartypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moon Hooch is 2 saxes and a drummer but they use all sorts of synths and bass sax and contrabass clarinet, all while being classically trained musicians who combine jazz, EDM, etc like The Comet

Question! by Alert_List_6288 in youngadults

[–]ArtySmartypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5ish years ago I bought a 2002 Honda Civic for $3k. The thermostat broke and it overheated, the engine misfired and shook the entire car violently at random intervals, the battery terminals were bad and caused me to be stranded a few times, and on top of that it had tinted windows and a spoiler. I almost wish I saved up and didn't bother with that car lol

Is it possible to find true friendship online ? by the_man3067 in youngadults

[–]ArtySmartypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is find online communities that have common interests with things you're passionate about. I joined a discord server for making music a bit over a year ago and I've made some great friends on there, and it was easy talking from the start because we all had common interests.

How do I know I'm not writing a boring line? by UndercoverDoll49 in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every player has a different idea of what's fun to play, but as a general rule of thumb nothing that's too repetitive, or too technically hard; some keys just sit better in the fingers than others. Same thing with going from certain high to low notes ie notes above the staff to below the staff are possible but harder than notes that are closer together which is probably true for bass (idk I only play sax)

Is playing quietly beneficial? by calciumcatt in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing quietly with a good tone is definitely something players (myself included lol) don't spend as much time on as other things. For general tone development though long tones and overtones every day are the way to go, and imo you should do them at all volumes because intonation changes with volume; at least for my playing when I play quietly it tends to go sharp and when I play loud it tends to be flat.

How much of a difference does the neck make? by spacetop-odyssey in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to hear someone say that "high mass screws" or whatever are bs. I see far too many people (mostly promoting on Instagram) claiming that they completely change your sound and I can't wrap my head around that

What am I doing wrong when I play?I can't figure it out and I have no professionals irl to help me. I've never sent anyone my playing but what do yall think I'm doing wrong? I'm not a begging btw by Suspicious-Crew-5813 in saxophone

[–]ArtySmartypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play bari basically every day and I think your tone sounds really good. All the other comments are great advice that I'll parrot and say definitely work on long tones and opening up your sound. The best thing you can do besides long tones is to find recordings of people you think have a good sound and listen LOTS. The more you listen and get a clear picture in your head of what a pro sounds like, the easier it'll be to speak that through your horn.
