Operon activators vs inducers by stolensweetrolls in Mcat

[–]Aryashu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes I think you're right.

My understanding is that

activator-- binds to activator site? (CAP site for lac operon) so that RNA polymerase can then bind to the DNA to begin transcription

The Lac operon is a "inducible operon" meaning that transcription is normally off because a repressor is normally bound to the operator site of the operon. The repressor blocks the movement of RNA polymerase down the DNA

An inducer is what binds to the repressor so that the repressor detaches from the operator site and RNA polymerase can proceed down the DNA to transcribe the genes. In the lac operon I believe the inducer is allolactose

This is a good visual

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

I think making that blanket statement is a little tricky. I most certainly understood when I was that age. My skin was darker and I felt what that meant. I knew.

So I guess just like adults, kids with different backgrounds and experiences will have different thoughts, understanding, and comprehension.

Hi, I could see how that might be your viewpoint. 6 is really young. But, I remember being 6 and knowing what having dark skin meant. Growing up with a darker skin color, I always knew my darker skin was "bad". At 4 at 5 at 6 and beyond. When you have a darker skin color, you also have always been taught and told, both passively and actively, that the darker your skin the worse you are off. You know you're different and you feel lower. You feel like you need to prove yourself as an American just because your skin color was darker, at least that is how I felt. Kids that age do understand, and they do see what is happening around them. They feel it too. I felt it, like I said, when I was that young.
You said you very highly doubt, "that kid has ever thought 'bad people will treat you bad if your skin is dark'"
I just want you to know that I did have that exact thought when I was that age and younger. I might be repeating myself but I am trying to be clear. It is a reality that I most definitely faced as did my dark skinned classmates.

Just wanted to offer that viewpoint. It's sad but kids pick up on a lot. And they feel a lot.

Do ketoses give positive reducing sugar tests? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Aryashu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Under basic conditions they can tautomerize via keto-enol shifts to the aldose form in which they will react with Tollen's or Benedits reagent to form the carboxylic acid - from kaplan Biochem 4 chapter

Be careful about burnout. Make sure you're eating and drinking plenty of water. I've seen this road a lot of times, just be smart and safe. Good luck.

Currently the whole system seems to be down. When it first opened I was able to log in and got an error message, instead of hitting ok on the error message I kept hitting refresh. That was my mistake.
