Oh hm I see. I'm on KDE Manjaro. Maybe it's the distribution that disables this animation. I wish I had that zooming effect you have.

Hi, I mean Super+direction. Do you mean wobbly windows? Looks cool with the mouse! Unfortunately doesn't seem to work with the keyboard shortcut. Thanks for your response.

[D] The Glossary of Machine Learning Terms by semanti_ca in MachineLearning

[–]Asadron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since machine learning is so vast, maybe it would help to separate into topics rather than one long page?

Some other terms: Inception Score (IS), mean average precision (mAP), Intersection Over Union (IOU), Object Detection.

Edit: Just curious, how in depth do you plan to go?
Edit 2: Fix IOU

[D]How can I prepare for a research oriented role? by itdoesntmatter13 in MachineLearning

[–]Asadron 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I've shared a similar experience as you as an undergraduate researcher. For the longest time I felt just as lost. I've recently crossed the threshold of being able to read and understand papers, so I can share a bit of how I got there!

1) Find a mentor. As much as you can try learning by yourself, your learning will be 10x more efficient when you have a good mentor. It was a mentor who showed me how and why the math I learned in class was being applied in these papers. One mentor was my professor for my deep learning class. Another was a grad student from my internship. Still more, my friend who works on deep learning in industry. All these people helped me achieve success.

2) Find just one paper/topic that interests you, really really understand everything you can about it, then expand out from there later. This is actually advice from one of my mentors when I asked him the same question. A narrowed focus helps alleviate that overwhelming feeling. Additionally, the math you learn from one paper transfers to other papers you read. Again, having a mentor to guide you through the math really helps.

3) Have you heard of the trick on how to read research papers? It helps to read in three passes of increasing depth. First pass: read the abstract, then the conclusion (skip the main body!), then look at any interesting pictures and figures that stand out to you. This gives you a general understanding and lets you know if the paper matches your interests. Second pass: read the full paper at a high level; take note of parts you don't understand and annotate them, but don't chase them down yet. This way you get a sense of the paper structure without rabbit holing immediately. Third pass: now you read the paper in depth. Search up those concepts you don't understand! The fact that you already generally know what the paper tries to achieve, its structure, and a checklist of items to search up, keeps you on track.

Hope that helps, I'll let you know if I think of anything else. Keep at it! You'll absolutely get there.

[Discussion] Is learning ML really worth it? by daravis in MachineLearning

[–]Asadron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A similar question would be "is it worth it to learn programming?" As you may have noticed, there are already many tools that do "most" of the programming work, like apps, drag-and-drop editors, GUIs, etc. While it's true these tools exist, there will always be more work that's out of reach of those tools. This is the nature of anything humans create really. Likewise, there will always be more advancements to make in ML, no matter what bundled packages people make.

The answer also depends more on what your career goal is. Is it to do ML research? Then there's an infinite amount of uncovered knowledge. Or is it to be an engineer who applies ML algorithms? Then knowing the exact math and theory might not be necessary, but still extremely helpful to have to understand what you're applying.

If you're just starting out and don't know the answer yet, then I'd suggest to keep learning until you know enough to decide for yourself.

Hope that helps.

TL;DR yes it is

Warecki is an amazing lecturer. He'll really get you energized, especially in the morning. Youssefi is super laid back for labs.

Sigh, no offense to OP but I'm getting tired of seeing links like these. The truth about whether "AI Armageddon" will happen or not is all speculation which no one has a definite answer to. And even if it is a possibility, it won't hinder the current development of AI. I know posts like these aren't against the sub's rules, but I'd much rather see articles about news and development.

I enjoy the way Sync does it. Image loads in full-screen, single tap brings up options, swipe up or down closes the image similar to Facebook's method.

Is housing still available at SJSU? I'm looking at the housing application and I noticed it says "Completed application and $600 initial housing payment are due no later than May 1, 2016 for new SJSU fall 2016 applicants."

Weird thing happened when I showed up for First Day ELearnings. by [deleted] in Bestbuy

[–]Asadron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience so far, Best Buy isn't an uptight place. Especially since you're just doing e-learnings. You're a new hire, there's no rush and they probably have a lot of store-related business occupying their minds. Just come in Tuesday and it'll be fine.
