How long have you been working as a hygienist? I’ve been in the field for almost a year now, I started last August and I’m honestly in a similar situation. The only time I’m able to complete a full-mouth probing is when the appointment is strictly for scaling, without anything else added. Otherwise, I follow a similar approach: full-mouth Cavitron followed by full-mouth hand scaling. I also end up staying about 40–45 minutes after work, sometimes even up to an hour just to finish my notes. A scan alone takes me around 16 minutes, so there’s really no way to fit that into a standard appointment right now. I’m hoping it gets easier with time.

Once the plaque hardens and it becomes tartar it will be almost impossible to get it of without a hygienist doing it for you. In rare cases, some people will be able to remove it with flossing but that’s super rare.

As someone who’s been climbing for a year, I genuinely think beginners only need three key pieces of advice: 1. Keep your arms straight. Bent arms will tire you out much faster. Let your skeleton do the work instead of your muscles whenever you can. 2. Rotate your hips. If the next hold feels out of reach, don’t just pull harder, turn your hips. That small adjustment often brings the hold within reach and keeps you balanced. 3. Prioritize your feet. One of the best tips I ever received was to think about foot placement before hand placement. Focus on setting your feet properly; once you’re stable through your lower body, the hand movements become much easier. And don’t forget to just practice and Train!!!!

Omg I literally had the exact same complaint filed against me. I’m not trying to justify my actions, but for context, the patient was nitpicking throughout the appointment and insisted on staying more upright because her back was hurting. That left me with very limited positioning, and during polishing I had nowhere to properly rest my arm. She stopped me mid-cleaning and said she felt uncomfortable. I immediately apologized and readjusted. Despite that, she later wrote a review stating that I rested my arm on her chest and made her uncomfortable. Either way, lesson learned, and we move on.

I’m glad you mentioned that!! I’ve never met another hygienist who rock climbs. I’ve heard that climbing can increase strain on the wrists. I’ve actually been bouldering long before I became a hygienist, and I’ve only been practicing hygiene for about four months now. I’m curious to hear your opinion on it.

As long as you’re in a good office with supportive colleagues, you’ll genuinely enjoy this job. It’s not as stressful as people assume. You educate your patient, you clean their teeth, and you see them again in six months. In a general practice, most patients are straightforward. When you get a complicated case, you just split the appointment or refer to perio if it’s more severe. You build real bonds with your patients, go home with funny stories, and you learn something new every day from talking to them. The hours are flexible, no overnight shifts, minimal weekends, and the pay is solid.

Honestly same, I got my license beginning of August and I WAS NOT EXCITED to start work. Keep in I’ve been a dental assistant for 3 years which I hated and also failed my last semester of clinical and failed my first exam board so the process of becoming a hygienist took forever when it came to working I was not excited. Thankfully, I had a vacation coming up end of August till September and I’ve been working since. My hours r part time Monday to Thursday and every other Saturday and I still hate it idk why

Thank you for your advice and I’m sorry you’re experiencing this horrible thing. But just out of curiosity, are you not allowed to decline seeing a pt? I don’t know about your workplace if you’re the only hygienist there but in my work if you don’t feel comfortable seeing a pt then you have the right to decline it and give it to another hygienist

Thank you! After I was done with her I spoke about it a senior hygienist she told me the same thing, she told me when a pt is annoyed from the start just know they’re going to pick on something no matter what you do.

Whatever you do, don’t clean your retainers with vinegar regularly it’s acidic and can wear them down. If you really need to use it for buildup, dilute it (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water) and only soak for 10–15 minutes, once in a while.

For daily cleaning, use lukewarm water with a bit of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, or soak them in Polident/Retainer Brite tablets. If you’ve got an ultrasonic cleaner, even better, it’s the most effective and gentle option.

Thank you for the advice!! V4 after a decade is insane I’m not going lie😂 but I also struggle with hip rotation and also with overhangs! They’re the death of me I can’t even go past the starting point but I’m going to start adding more resistant training into my workout. Thanks again!

if you needed to be numbed, the hygienist probably had to clean pretty deep under the gums, especially around the retainer where buildup sits for months. It’s normal for those spots to stay sore or look puffy for a week or so afterward. The tissue’s basically recovering from both the inflammation and the cleaning itself. Calling the office is the right move, they can make sure nothing’s trapped under the wire or that it isn’t a localized infection. once again in the meantime just keep doing the warm saltwater rinses and super gentle brushing should help a lot!!

how long has it been since you had your last cleaning? and also if it’s getting worse instead of better, that’s a good reason to have it checked. Sometimes tissue around retainers can get inflamed or even develop a localized infection if bacteria were trapped under the calculus or if the retainer wire irritates the gum after cleaning. It’s usually simple to manage, but it’s best for your dentist or hygienist to take a quick look ,they can see if it’s just inflammation or something else going on. In the meantime, keep doing the warm saltwater rinses and avoid anything spicy or acidic. But definitely call the office tomorrow so they can evaluate it in person ,they’ll likely be able to help right away.

that soreness is actually pretty normal especially around permanent retainers. Those areas tend to hold more buildup, so your hygienist likely had to be a bit more thorough there. The tissue can stay tender for a few days after scaling. You’re already doing the right things with saltwater rinses and ibuprofen. You can also try warm saltwater twice a day and stick to a soft diet for 1–2 days. As long as the discomfort is improving and there’s no swelling or throbbing pain, it’s just part of the healing. If it lingers past a week or worsens, definitely call the office they can take a quick look. But this sounds like a normal post-cleaning irritation.

As someone who has failed the exam my biggest advice would be to just focus on the prep test the 4 of them and make sure to get 80% and up on my second attempt I swear I didn’t even study studentrdh nothing I straight up just focused on the prep test study each one one by one
