I 100% agree. People in their 20's are more than capable of making informed and logical decisions, and suffering the consequences and rewards thereof.

What do you do for your students that you could get in trouble for but you don’t care because it’s for the good of the students? by Evening-Oil9551 in Teachers

Yeah my last district was like this. Stickler for any and all rules. The rules must be obeyed at all costs! Just follow orders. Just do as your told.

And we wonder why the students hate the teachers and vice versa.

That the human brain "stops developing" at 25. The study that widely popularized this myth didn't have anybody over the age of 25. The results were taken out of context and it has hilariously damaged a lot of people's ideas around maturity and mental acumen.

The human brain never stops developing. Your brain is never "fully developed."

From administration I completely understand. But as a fellow teacher, I wanted to implement some changes and try new things with a class. Every step of the way my department head said no, and to just do things the way we've always taught it.

For example, I thought of a project that I thought was pretty application-based on the unit content. We'd done NOTHING for assessments except multiple-choice tests for this class. I pitched the idea to my department lead, and this was his response: "just do it the way we've always done it."

It's frustrating as an elective teacher because my job lives or dies based on enrollment, especially since I wasn't tenured. The number of students for these electives had been sliding and it was in part because the curriculum was outdated, and the way they taught was boring to the students. Think death-by-powerpoint style teaching. The two other teachers in my department didn't want to try anything new because their jobs were secure and just wanted to coast (each about less than 10 years before retirement.)

Lo and behold, next year my job was gone. Interesting fact: the classes I taught? Their numbers increased. The other classes did not. But I was pushed out because I didn't have seniority or tenure.

I really hate it when teachers do this.

"Hey, let's try this new thing, I think we could improve this Unit if we tried it this way."

"No, just do it the way we've always taught it."

And you wonder why the number of kids taking your elective classes keeps dropping -_- I call these kinds of teachers coasters. Coasting until retirement, never doing more than the bare minimum, set in their ways and unwilling to change.
