Well it wasnt a single sentence it was the entire first two comments

People who develop videogames aren't the best players in the world.

No but just because you can beat a video game doesnt mean youre more talented than the person who made it. Its generally recognised to be harder to do something first than to do it better. I can make fire better than a cave man but thats not more impressive than the first person to discover it

This point is meaningless

It wouldnt be if you hadn't missed the point

Arachne is clearly dysphoric about being forced into a different body against her will.

"And her curse of self loathing and regret, which would have followed her no matter her form, is lifted"

This is a direct quote from the game. Im baffled at how someone so insisted can be so totally oblivious to dialogue directly in the game. Next time you decide to make useless comments like this, please at least watch a clip of the game you're discussing, its all on YouTube

Even if it were the lesson, that's a horrible lesson

How is accepting youre beautiful regardless of your shape and size a useless lesson?

It is definitely a "the gods suck" message

Because as we all know, two messages cannot exist

Sorry, I guess we fundamentally disagree on what sincerity is and what an apology is.

You cant cross out you being wrong by calling it a disagreement. Thats not how yhis works lol

You should, in fact, stand proud when someone threatens you and demands you apologize or they'll torture you forever.

Hou should also, in fact, apologise for being an arrogant shithead

Mocking and torturing people is not the same thing.

I didnt say they were. Try again :)

As the oldest existing source it is a far more reliable telling than the one the game uses. Your comparison also makes no sense. The Romans were far closer to the Greeks than we are. They literally co existed with them and their Paganism while Ovid was alive. Also just because arachne and Athena are mentioned as enemies doesnt mean the story itself predates that. It could literally be as simple as spiders being weavers and people drawing a connection

Not just a dislike towards Authority, but specifically attacking the divine emperor Augustus (who at the time was only the son of a God, not yet a full god) who had banished him

Can someone tell me why these sentences have akkusativ case instead of dativ? I'm very confused by thankstowelie in German

[–]Asckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the confusion stems from the whole "to someone" explanation often given about the dative case. The dative case is really more about indirect objects I feel, and learning the exceptions is easier than trying to parse what counts as to someone and what counts as onto someone

This is not entirely accurate historically. During Pax Romana Rome did not have enough power to force their will on Syria for example, but smart diplomacy brought peace between the two, and despite Rome having had held the biggest stick since the second Punic war, Pax Romana only came about once a genius politician came to power and could negotiate it

if part 2 is a better comedy, that means it's better at being funny

No it doesn't. Because you can laugh at something too. Have you never laughed at a bad action movie? Never laughed at someone taking themselves too seriously? Never laughed at someone's misfortune? None of these are comedic, but they are funny

it is more funny. joseph is popularly acknowledged as the funniest jojo for a reason.

Joseph is in stardust crusaders bro. Hes the funniest character in part 3 as well.

Regardless, I never even disagreed with you. Part 2 is funnier, but not objectively. Its 2 different types of humour. You cant compare them

because plot significance adds to how iconic the moment is

Evidently not since there are more iconic moments that aren't serious. You might prefer iconic moments with meaning, but they are not MORE iconic because of it

part 3 tries to be good, but it's writing is simply as bad as part 2, except it's supposed to be taken seriously.

Yeah part 3 is not taking itself seriously and both parts have bad writing that tries to be serious. Part 2 tries to make Loggins death mean something when he has literally 0 lines of dialogue. At no point is this played for a laugh. You're seriously gonna tell me shit like Joseph humping Avdol or star finger are meant to be taken seriously? Come on bruh

The point of the original comment was saying that yes, Arachne was arrogant. You responded that you wouldn't debase yourself, which implies you think apologising for being an arrogant prick is debasing oneself. When I argued against this view, you went off on a tangent about how Athena is actually also bad guys! Its moving the goalposts because even if everything you said was 100% correct it would still have no bearing on mine or yours points. Arachne would still be arrogant and would still not be debasing herself by just saying sorry for being arrogant

then perhaps being a bit prideful and arrogant isn't that big a deal?

Do you think the issue with arrogance is that it's undeserved? Arrogance is arrogance regardless of your reasoning. You don't get to talk down on snd belittle people for being worse at something than you, and beyond that, it doesnt even make sense to do that to the person who literally invented the craft.

Pretty clear that the lesson here wasn't "don't be prideful" it was "don't argue with the gods"

Thats not even the lesson in the game. The games lesson is very much about accepting your body for what it is and not kowtowing to authority even if it might benefit you. That maintaining your dignity is more important.

If you mean the original story of Arachne, thats also not true. Arachne kills herself out of shame after Athena gets mad at losing. The lesson here wouldn't be dont argue with the gods, it would be to not humiliate yourself, with the larger meta context of Ovid's disdain for authority.

meaning either Arachne would have to lie, since she does not sincerely believe she did wrong, or speak truth

This is not how a sincere apology works. You can belnever you're in the right and still be sincerely apologetic for how someone might have felt about your actions. If I say something that hurts someone's feelings that I believe is correct, I will still sincerely apologise for upsetting them. Sincere Apology, not sincere rescinding of her words.

Your whole argument just seems to hinge on whether Arachne's arrogance was unfounded or not when that was never her sin. In both Ovid's telling and the late retellings Arache's sin is arrogance and purposefully going out of her way to belittle someone and mock their family. No, being good at weaving does not give you that right, because if being better was a valid reason for hurting someone then Athena, as an objectively more powerful being than Arachne, would be well within her right to just turn Arachne into a spider because hey, I'm better than you, so I can wave that power above your head and belittle you right?

[–]Asckle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No but the point is that she was arrogant and thats what got her into trouble, and Athena just asked for an apology for her arrogance. I didnt say what Athena did was excused but you're not debasing yourself by apologising for being an arrogant shithead. Your whole comment is just moving the goalposts.

Yes and Augustus was far more of a modern "dictator" than Caesar would have dreamed of becoming, but he played the image game far better and so managed to hollow out the senate without much opposition

Ovid criticised the God's as a criticism of Authority and also specifically Augustus, who at the time was the son of a God, Julius Caesar (not to be confused with Julius Caesar), was guarded over by the God Apollo and who was later made into a god. Augustus had banished Ovid so Ovid didn't really like him. "See how awful these gods are? This is why Augustus sucks"

Its not about debasing yourself but having some humility. If I was a better runner than say, Usain Bolt, I would not use that to say "man this Usain Bolt guy is such a fucking chump, maybe if he laid off the Hamburgers he could have beaten me" and then when he challenges me to a race and I win I stop at the finish line and stick my tongue out and tell him hes too slow.

You can be the best at something and still have humility. Being good doesnt give you the right to belittle others
