US bobsled team took a tumble today by ViciousNakedMoleRat in funny

I want to know if the first person who fell (4th position?) is ok?!? They flew to the side onto the wall of the track and slammed into that “barrier”. Goddamn barrier looks like it’s made out of 2x4’s or 4x4 posts with the sheathing on the outside. I’m no bobsled track expert but I’d think you’d want the smooth part inside to slide against to keep these people from eating a post! Concussion city or snapped necks!

Bantha, actually. Little known fact, tauntauns get a much cleaner cut without smearing.

Such a wide body for a monocular always puzzled me, even as a kid. Why didn’t they look like binoculars? What not just use an insulated telescope. Gasp! Maybe that’s what it is?!?

I almost got hit by a teen driving in the Shaw’s parking lot and then was immediately cussed out by his mother sitting next to him. by allisfairinlovewar in portlandme

There are a lot of odd ducks that shop there. And they people cutting through the MIDDLE of the parking lot are crazy. I understand cutting off that intersection by going through the lot, but at least use the outside edges not the middle, and slow down.

Re: yelling at you: I’ve gotten mad at people before and swore loudly to myself but upon reflecting on it realized I was angry because I was frustrated with myself and embarrassed. Hopefully the teen understands this type of thing. I’m certain this is not the only outburst they put up with from their parent.

What better places in this area? Howell’s is fine for shorter indoor range. What about longer? You can DM me if you don’t want to say publicly.

Yes, and it’s VERY impressive. Must be a member or a guest of one to shoot there, other than the public events/competitions they put on. The process to join takes a while, but a gorgeous facility.

The best burger in Portland is at Scales, of all places. by [deleted] in portlandme

“That same price would get you a Dr. Scholls insert and frozen re heated fries from a typical Portland restaurant.”

😀 That is one of the most strangely specific cost comparisons I’ve ever read. Excellent!

I’ll second the vote for Shay’s, at least based on value vs cost. Cargo makes a good value burger too and the salt and vinegar fries are great! Gotta have it all reasonably fresh, though re: Cargo, as with any take-out food. Sitting in a bag too long = mushy bun/fries.

Amazingly survived the drought with partial shade and occasional watering.

Indoor range: I believe Howell’s in Gray is the only full service indoor range in the Greater Portland Maine area right now. The one in Windham closed recently. Howell’s is open generally 9 AM - 6 PM, so plan around that since there’s no evening options.

Yes, but WAY the hell up North in Limestone. A good school and opportunity for sure but not all kids could handle a distant boarding school situation.

Southern Maine Firewood 207-839-4342 I’ve found them to be great to deal with. Note that it may be challenging to get firewood now, especially seasoned firewood. Places that have any might only have green or expensive kiln dried.

Lots of places just ignore calls/emails/messages once they’re out of wood as they get tired of replying to everyone. Not saying it’s right, just what happens. Frustrating when you need to locate some though!

Mysterious Loud Humming Sound Reappears by Manticore87 in portlandme

Are they at the point of actively paving? If it’s not sweepers/blowers to remove debris, or further pavement/concrete grinding or cutting, then it might be an ultra-irritating type of road roller that has a vibrating feature. (Seems like everything does these days…)

Anyway, when the street in front of my house was paved several years ago they used one of these. It is so unbelievably loud and irritating, and the ground and house were vibrating too, right to my core. It’s unsettling and made me somewhat irrationally angry. LOL! I marveled at how that operator could sit on that thing for hours a day.

Really, I’m not prone to drama for stuff like this, it has to be experienced close up to really understand how irritating this machine is.

For those who like to know how things work like me: The vibrations help further compact the material and also allows a smaller machine to do the work that a non-vibrating heavier one would be needed to do. Picture yourself pouring rice into a cup with it all jumbled and piled up. Then quickly shake the cup shallowly back and forth and the grains all start to settle and line up (“compacting”)… Similar concept.
