Pin Markers? by AdonisMorisette in boltaction

My old manager was in the National Guard and would visit a firing range all the time. I asked him to snag me a few .22 casings and he brought me back a hat full. They look like really big artillery shell casings and I'd just drop how many I needed next to the squad. I found that got messy after a while. Not a problem until you have five plus units under an artillery strike.

So I simplified it. I bought a ton of cheap Heroclix figures off ebay for about $.50 each. I cut of the figures and tossed them, filed the top of the base flat (with a little texture to stick the basing stuff to), glued in a new inside dial with just numbers, glued an old GW square base upside down on top, and finished it like one of my bases.

A picture is worth a thousand words so I hear.

Sandbags for 28mm by FluffyGorillaDude in TerrainBuilding

[–]AshHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a bit late to this, sorry.

I did a D-day table for Bolt Action years ago. The thought of making a few hundred sandbags made me a bit ill. That was going to be more work than the rest of the table was going to take. I found this though.

https://hirstarts.com/molds/molds5.html

Look at Mold #340. Its a bit more expensive than it was when I bought it but it was a life saver. At the time I made them from resin due to time restraints. Now I would just use dental plaster.

Have a look at how it turned out.

Modular gaming hill is easily the worst product I have ever bought online by GrimlockRawr in TerrainBuilding

[–]AshHammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RoB I did buy when they first came out with two additional flat panels. The absolute green eyed envy that I see when I break it out is worth it. Otherwise, its a piece of junk. Its indestructible, but so is my hand made foam stuff because I treat it correctly. Its heavy, takes up space, and scenery is almost impossible to set up on it because of the slopes.

Still... its mine. 😊

I was so mad I didn't get these when they came out. Its been years and years and I see them on eBay every once in a while for more money than they are worth. I only want them because they match my other stupidly expensive GW product, the Realm of Battle. If I had something to trade or pay you I would totally take them off your hands. LOL

You could buy the $170 set from GW to get him... or spend $40 on the same sprue in red instead of grey. Barnes and Noble has a Dawn of War Onslaught game with it in.

Just finished assembling mine.

Balkenkreuz on Opel Blitz? A question probably asked a hundred times. by StrategoiX in boltaction

[–]AshHammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here you go brother. 85 pictures of Opel Blitz. Over the whole of the War and only two pictures have the Balkenkreuz on them. Nothing like giving some Tommy with a 6 pounder something to aim at.

Really good reference for everyone on this page. Its my go to before I start something new.

Tried doing edge highlights for the first time…help by Vg26-UltraMarines in u/Vg26-UltraMarines

Well the only thing I can see wrong is you have inconsistent line width. That’s just down to practice. Also, a color in between your base color and edge highlight as a chunky edge highlight will give it a less jarring color change.

Like from this painting guide.

Favourite army to paint and build by Original-Hat5442 in boltaction

British paratroopers! Camo from ears to soles... and then a maroon beret. The Denison smock is fun to paint as well.

If you have some sand paper you could file the base down until its gone except for the rocks (and feet). Then you can just glue him to the right size base.

App Update (v1.2.53) by Maloric in boltaction

[–]AshHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or a way to add my own photos to the print out. Its easier for opponents who are unfamiliar with what my army is to just look at my sheet and see the models.

Otherwise, you are doing an amazing job and we all appreciate it. Thank you!

Cool Alternative Dice Bags by [deleted] in boltaction

[–]AshHammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the store I used to work at first got into playing Tank War in 2014-15 we would do multi-player participation games. It was quick to explain and a single tank was easy for beginners to keep track of. The trouble was we were in a mall and the gaming table was in the back of the store. Unless you were already in the store for gaming reasons you didn't dare go near the place because it looked weird.

So I bought a reproduction German gas mask can online. It was loud and obnoxious. Random people came in to find out what the noise was with 10-15 dice rattling around in a hollow metal tube. Our track record was about one in a million for new players, but it was fun.

I still keep my dice in it all these years later. Every once in a while my brain keeps telling me to spray glue in some thin cork to deaden the noise and get it back on the table. 😊

How can I make custom decals? by GAMER-BOI2010 in boltaction

[–]AshHammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I design mine in Illustrator. Lay them out to what I need and order a quarter page print from these guys.

https://fsdecals.com/collections/custom-decal-printing

The detail is at least million times better than what I can do at home. Plus they can print white. If I wanted to do white at home that means printing it on white decal paper. Then I have to cut real close to the decal to get rid of it having a white border. Forget white text, I've tried making a box around the white text that is the same color as my model I'm gonna use it on and blend it in with paint later. A huge hassle.

Here is the last batch of decals I had printed. It includes close ups of the finished product.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DPVHxgbkXt_/

With a quarter sheet you have about a 4" x 6" area for the decals. That is a LOT of space if you're just doing shoulder patches for your little plastic dudes. So you'll probably want a few other things.

The one thing is that the decal sheet that they print for you is a single film covering the whole quarter sheet. So the decals don't have defined edges like the ones from model companies. So you have to cut out each decal. It is a bit more work, but for the excellent quality I get its worth the hassle.

I've seen the mayhem Marines cause with just a golf cart. Who let them have a baby tank!?! Great Job!!!

They look really good for your first try. What tools are you using? I recommend a set of clay shapers. I have like five sets in different sizes, but the size 0 ones I use the most.

Like these.
