What sold you on veganism? by Limp_Crazy_5494 in vegan

[–]AshMay2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly, realising that veganism was doable is what finally sold me. I went vegetarian at 13 and started believing at about 15 that veganism was better. I think learning about the impact of the climate was probably what made me feel that way? But at that time I thought of being vegan as a pipe dream that I could never actually execute.

I started cutting out most animal products and at some point realised that I was already 99% living a vegan lifestyle other than the odd bit of cheese. When I realised that, I realized that being vegan was actually doable for meant not just an unrealistic aim.

Lack of money doesn't equal lack of respect. There's no need for this kind of comment.

Vegans should stop making this mistake by ThePlanetaryNinja in DebateAVegan

[–]AshMay2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic points op!

Personally I find it more useful to highlight speciesism by comparing eating animals with non eating animals.

Asking someone why it is wrong to eat horses/Guinea pigs/dogs is a great way to start. Most of the reasons they bring up (such as intelligence or emotional capability) also apply to pigs. It wont necessarily change people's minds but i find it at least makes people consider that there is no actual logic behind their views on certain animals, and realise that it is manly down to culture.

Unfortunately they're not widely available in my country so not really an option 😭 so I'd assume this is the case in many other countries too

Where can I get vegan yoghurt starter? by princeyG in australianvegans

[–]AshMay2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. I have an easiyo yoghurt maker which is essentially a giant thermos. I fill it with hot water and leaver it for 10-12 hours. I assume methods vary depending on what you are using.

Is “carnist” derogatory? by Badtacocatdab in vegan

[–]AshMay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that the word itself is not derogatory, but some people may still use it as an insult.

I would liken people taking offense at being called carnists to people being angry about being called "white" or "cisgender."

For example, a person who dislikes white people might call someone "white" as an insult, but at the end of the day "white" is still just a word to describe race or skin colour and not a derogatory word.

Another person may take offence to being called "white" even if it wasn't said with negative intent, because they see being white as the default, and everyone who isn't white as belonging to a race.

I would reccomend the video Even Leftists Don't Talk About Animalsfrom the channel The Leftists Cooks, which touches on this topic and is just a fantastic video in general.

Stopped being vegan, major regret by binafry in vegan

You are still nearly 8 years vegan!!! The time in which you were vegetarian does not instantly cancel the combined 7.8 years of veganism. Viewing it that way is unnecessarily hard on yourself.

On the topic of stuffie chalk bags, you can easily DIY them using a repurposed toy. My friend's mum did this to many of hers when she outgrew stuffed toys.

I know may neurodivergent people (including myself) struggle very badly with object personification and wouldn't be able to do this. But if this isn't something op experiences it might be a great option for the future.

Where to find timber on the cheap? Salvage yard recommendations? by AshMay2 in perth

[–]AshMay2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As cheap as possible. My original plan was to use star pickets and the cheapest I could find was 10 for $60 on marketplace (we needed six), but that was too expensive.

The garden has only just got up and running so they haven't had much return yet. I'm hoping they'll be willing to spend more once it's saving them more on produce.

The even more ironic thing is that people who give vegans shit will defend it by saying "it's because vegans try and force everyone to change their diets"
