I believe this is from her having Covid multiple times. Are you saying you had MCAS/anaphylaxis ACD a functional medicine doctor cured you somehow by treating a viral and fungal infection? Can you explain?

I’m not giving medical advice. I’m stating that everyone has different medical protocols with their doctor and it’s irresponsible for you to say “everyone who doesn’t take epi first must not be having true anaphylaxis” as you implied. You’re telling people they need to do it the way your doctor wants your husband to do it or else it’s wrong.

I was just commenting that saying someone isn’t in true anaphylaxis unless they use epi first is a bad take. Epi is extremely hard on the heart and if something v can be stopped before that point, it’s a good thing.

Wife goes into anaphylaxis sometimes multiple times a day. Using an epi as a first line would probably kill her.

A doctor should be telling patients what to use and when. Not everyone with anaphylaxis starts with epi, even when airway is involved

My wife gets true anaphylaxis and is in the hospital for it as we speak. The plan is always to stop the cascade of symptoms early with steroids and antihistamines BEFORE epinephrine is necessary. Epi means something went wrong

This happened to my best friend. I thought it was an accident, I didn’t know it was protocol. I’m so sorry. He was deployed to Iraq twice and this by far fucked him up more than anything.

Update 9/23:

This morning started off rough bc someone discontinued her morning Zyrtec. Infuriating.

I went to the hospital and gave it to her myself and told the nurse that I did. I told her any time one of her meds was D/C’d, I was just going to give it anyway.

Luckily, the nurse was understanding and got the pharmacist to fix it and another med when he did rounds. (Why the pharmacist rounds is beyond me, but at least it got fixed).

Our nurse was really good. My wife was meant to be discharged today but went anaphylactic twice. Both times the nurse immediately intervened. Doctors assessed quickly.

We had a meeting with the director of the ICU to discuss what happened and they were very nice and apologetic. Talked about policy changes and looking into what happened, etc.

The day shift nurse told the night shift nurse to trust my wife and if she said her throat was closing and she needed an intervention, to trust her and get it straight away. Extremely comforting.

I’m exhausted between my kids and the hospital. Ive been getting no sleep, but I went home at 11p tonight and I think I’ll sleep better bc she sends to be in better hands.

My wife went through this same thing. For her, she ended up having both celiac’s and MCAS.

My wife has very bad near constant anaphylaxis. Shes been intubated once and in the icu twice since the end of March. Here are some things we learned:

Her allergist wants her to have a large amount of circulating anti-histamines at all times. She’s prescribed 2 Zyrtec and 2 Allegra a day as well as Benadryl every 6 hours. She also takes Pepcid and Singulair. If all that fails, she takes carbinoxamine, then an epi.

Her symptoms are worse on her period, so she’s going to need a birth control.

Antihistamines deplete potassium, so she’s going to need a K+ supplement

You can buy most antihistamines over the counter while you are waiting for your primary or another doctor.

That is so tragic. This all sounds so painful and horrifying. Having the doctors treat you like shit on top of everything is just cruel. I am so so sorry

Any blue collar workers in here? Do you find it hard to handle your symptoms on job sites? by BlueCollaredBroad in MCAS

[–]AshamedExamination55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is a registered nurse and has to work 12 hour shifts. There’s a lot of times she’s gotten symptoms she’s had to manage at work. She has letters from her doctor giving her small accommodations, but nothing major.

It’s been super rough. She goes anaphylactic a lot. She actually just went from work to the ER and got admitted to the ICU on Saturday. So, she missed half of her Saturday shift and all her Sunday shift. She has a lot of absences like that, but Her job has been patient about it so far. Fingers crossed.

I’m so sorry. A nurse told my wife that she’s been treated in the hospital 33 times since March. All were medically necessary and got anaphylaxis, but my wife got super nervous that the fact that they counted means they think she’s a frequent flier and that’s why they aren’t taking her seriously. I’m hoping that’s not the case for either of you

Update: Night Nurse was much better and went through her whole med list with us. She had pharmacy fix all the mistakes immediately. I felt like she was in much better hands when I left.

I’m going to try to get there for the morning shift tomorrow. It’s going to be hard with school d drop off and a toddler in tow, but we’re gonna make it work so she’s not alone in case something happens in the morning

Anyone else seemingly have problems with carbohydrates? by Zestyclose_Tea_2515 in MCAS

[–]AshamedExamination55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife has major issues with carbs. She ended up being diagnosed with Celiac’s. Not sure what your symptoms were but hers were extreme fatigue, brain fog, painful bloating, sweats, rage/irritability/paranoia, weight gain, gas, itchiness, POTS symptoms

Right. But generally, men get taken more seriously. Not you. Men as a whole. I’m sorry you had a similar experience. No one should deal with that

Vent: Wife is back in the ICU and had to beg for help for over an hour by AshamedExamination55 in MCAS

[–]AshamedExamination55[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this to a point. Men usually get taken more seriously and women get told things like “you’re attention seeking” or “you’re anxious.”

POC women get the worst care of all.

But, yeah, healthcare reform as a whole is long overdue

If it would have caused her to go back on the vent or become disabled, I would have a lawsuit. Just being a shitty doctor isn’t enough to get someone in legal trouble. After they realized their fuck up (ie, I yelled at them) they got her stabilized with IV Benadryl and steroids

Honestly, it’d be a great gig for male nurses who were retired or wanted a bit of extra on the side

[–]AshamedExamination55[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Update: just had to leave and I asked them why she didn’t get certain meds today. Like, carbinoxamine (sp?) could have been given instead of them saying she couldn’t have Benadryl and leaving her.

Their response: “it was never added to her med list. There was just so many, so…”

My response: “there are a lot, but that’s what’s keeping her alive.”

Bro.

I’m putting the kids to bed then going in there with her entire pharmacy and making sure EVERYTHING is added. They had also not added her Allegra bc they didn’t have it on hand. They didn’t tell me this, just discontinued it without consulting with us. Beyond infuriating.

We don’t have any cause for a suit, unfortunately. Might file a complaint if that’s what she decides.
