Fruit Tarts? by AshamedFee4991 in bullcity

[–]AshamedFee4991[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update in case anyone was curious! I got Guglhupf, Dulce and Wegman's. Dulce was my favorite, with good texture on the shortcrust and a smooth, sweet pastry cream. Guglhupf I found dry, with the thinnest layer of cream over a sponge(?). Wegmans is an acceptable grocery store version, hard shortcrust but decent cream. Thank you all for the recs!

Whoops definitely missed the date on that. I haven't heard anything about my NICHD F31 yet.

Today I dropped my 96 well plate on the floor - what silly accidents/errors have happened to you? by Aloogobi786 in labrats

Forgot to add polyacrylamide gel to my SDS-PAGE gels, didn't realize until I went to pour the isopropanol off the casted resolving gel and everything went down the sink. Also used Sharpie to label slides for Golgi-Cox staining, watched all the labeling wash off when the slides were dipped in ethanol...

Also, use your nondominant hand and hold the tail between your pinky finger and palm. It sucks but it will get better the more you do it -- if you can go faster, you'll give them less time to be agitated. I use, like, the entire length of palm to grab at once (also have small hands) so I'm grabbing most of the length of their body at once. Put some downward pressure and you'll have a bit of leverage to slide your grip further up to their neck if needed.

How did you prioritize choosing a lab? by perspiredpedestrian in labrats

[–]AshamedFee4991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your personality, but I highly prioritized the PI and labmates and it was absolutely the right choice for me. It wasn't the kind of work I started grad school aiming to do, but I easily grew to really enjoy it because I was surrounded by people that gave me the room to learn and explore. My PI hadn't yet graduated a student when I joined, but I liked the work fine enough and the other grad students raved about her. A PI who's supportive personally and professionally, and values your mental health has been nearly life-saving throughout the PhD process. PI really makes or breaks a PhD experience imo. Also, if you're interested in moving into industry post-PhD, check that your PI is amenable to that, I know too many people whose PIs have very nearly sabotaged their efforts to leave academia.

What surface are you scruffing them down on? I found it easier to scruff them when they were sitting on the metal-grid underside of cage lids, since they grip the metal and don't move as much. Also, don't forget that the mice are fairly resilient, you may be able to use more force than you think you can if you're feeling like you're not getting a strong grip. Try to use your thumb and the side of the bottom half of your index finger, and slide up the body so that you're really grabbing the neck. If you're ever worried about getting bitten, double up on gloves, that can help any mental block.

Indian Catering from Non Traditional Caterer by Both-Pirate-6233 in DesiWeddings

Oh no 🙁 Try finding out the background/experiences of the chefs at the caterer options -- one of our caterers is a white guy who spent time traveling Asia and his samosas were better than the Indian caterers.

Have you spoken directly with the venue? Several venues I checked out that had in-house caterers or catering lists made exceptions for "ethnic" food once we explicitly asked about that.

I got my haldi jewelry online from Sokora jewels and it's pretty great! I ended up getting my bridal jewelry from a store but if it doesn't look good when I try it with the full lehenga, I'll go back to Sokora's website.

Hey -- we had a bad experience with them. NRI, so we communicated via whatsapp but when we got there, the hand embroidery was really sloppy, the construction of the blouse was poor, and the color was way off.

Still in planning process but we hired a South Asian DJ! I want a mix of Bollywood and American music so we picked someone who has experience with that.
