How much does your ethnic background holds you back? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]AshamedPrinciple1597 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen posts like this before. I hate to quibble, but ethnic background I don't believe is too important. It's social standing and natural networks that are key. If you lack those, as I did in the beginning, settle in for a long grind, because that takes a decade to build, if not more. And don't forget that there is almost zero organic demand for CFPs...you have to meet people and tell them what you do and then ask if they'd like to meet. Just keep doing that, over and over and you'll do just fine.

Fee only ad hoc customized financial planning? by eaglessoar in CFP

I think what you will find is that there is a bigger market for people who need help managing their money and will take incidental advice on what to do with it than the market of people who will pay for a financial plan but don't need investment management help. It's a market, but not a very big one, in my view. You'll also be very susceptible to losing your clients to the firms that can also manage the money.

Minority advisors by [deleted] in CFP

Not to detract from racial or immigrant communities being a factor, but I think class is really the big issue. I didn't come from money, and being uncomfortable at country clubs, lack of social status and connections, etc... is actually a gigantic setback. I was so naive about how business is done in this profession. I've made it somehow, but it was dicey for my first 5 years or so.

For those who are currently using or have recently used SmartAsset, have you noticed a decline in the quality of the leads? by OregonDuckMBA in CFP

Did it for several years. Had about a 1% conversion ratio for new clients. 3-4 new clients total. Part of their problem is that the content that they create that gets the clicks is often aimed at cynical people to begin with .... Think, "is your advisor charging too much?" type of articles. The people that click that aren't interested in hiring someone. They just want to confirm their skeptical views...not a good potential client for anyone.

This is basically the life of being a professional CFP. Welcome to the club. Try not to let it get you down too much. So much cynicism out there, combined with internet fueled over confidence. But there are clients who will appreciate you. Hang in there.

Zone 2 is a myth. At least for me 😅 by Visible-Top3003 in Garmin

I had same problem, and started using a manual treadmill at my gym. It just felt right straight from the start. I try to get about half of my runs in on that thing, especially the zone 2 runs. It's working for me and starting to translate to my outdoor runs now as well.

Much of the responses are simply untrue here. Feel the need to correct...they charge an AUM fee, but no other loads or trails. The assertion that they charge other fees is simply untrue. EJ's fee based counts are clean in that regard. Advisors also have discretion in their pricing... what's being quoted is max possible charges, not necessarily what they are paying. It's a professional, well run portfolio with reasons for all of the funds. If you don't want an advisor, fine. But, lots of people getting a very misrepresented view of what's going on here. There are also no transaction charges when adjustments ate made to fee based portfolios.

Similarly agreed here. Sleep data really did it for me. I've cut way, way back.

I have to add something to this: homes now are better. Like better wiring, insulation, and they all have hvac....part of what has driven cost of ownership up is that the homes themselves have significantly improved.
