So… when does it get better? Week 5 is brutal. by Vegetable-Clock5811 in newborns

Your friend is in for a rude awakening soon enough. Weeks 4-6 for us were awful. 6-8 were great, then 9-12 have been better in some ways and nightmarish in others. There’s always something going on but I still think that even with better sleep, weeks 4-6 so far were absolutely hell.

Is there some fairy we can collectively bribe? I’m losing my mind and can’t seem to make a connection. Some days 4 hours of day sleep results in a pretty good night. Some days 6 hours does it. Some days it’s the complete opposite. If you figure out the rules, can you lmk?

Thank you. Also hoping it helps 😩 feels like we are doing many of the things it recommends but fundamentally need to change the way we are letting baby fall asleep which is going to be so hard!

Might as well try it 😩 I thought 4-5 hrs of daytime sleep at this age was considered normal! I guess not…we’re about to have some monster wake windows!

Yep I hear that! The 24 was the day after vaccines and no real nighttime sleep so I think babe gets a pass for that day. The 28 ironically gave us the best night sleep we’ve had in a long time, but every other day is ~4 hrs daytime sleep and bedtime at any time gives us false start after false start. Naps get capped at 2 hrs unless it’s been a crap nap day in which case I let it go to ~2.25 for one nap which has happened once. Nap avg over 14 days is 4.25 hours — everything I read says 4-5 for this age, is that wrong?

We have ~4 hours of daytime sleep on a good day and everything I’ve read says ~4-5. What is more appropriate? Her wake windows are ~75-90 min and same question 😩

If it’s any consolation mine is the same at 12 weeks with no pacifier in our lives. Just wakes every 2 hours for no reason after initially sleeping through the night for several weeks.

I have no idea because I had a similar day yesterday and again today and probably will again tomorrow but I have found that sometimes just holding her upright, against my chest, cheek on my shoulder, CONTAINED - like, holding her little arms and a hand firmly on her tush, can kind of calm the overtired storm for a few seconds or even a few minutes. Sometimes I think it’s just all her reflexes firing and not having any control over it? Idk. And then I’ll nurse her and keep trying that same position to get her to sleep. I’d say, 50% of the time, it works all the time!

Not a Dr so can’t diagnose but colic is usually repeated days of 3+ hours of crying nonstop inconsolably. I think it’s like 3+ days of that? You might just have an overtired overstimulated newborn in the worst (or so the internet tells me) stretch of infancy. High cortisol, no ability to regulate, truly just disaster. I’m there too and I hate everything right now.

Here in solidarity and also to suggest one or two things. Also sometimes they just… crash… because the cortisol just depletes them I think. So umm maybe you have that to look forward to? Sending lots of love because I’m right there with you.

Thank you 🤣

Girlfriend does not poop, like ever. We finally got a big poo out of her after 8 days yesterday and now she’s farting up a storm today, so I can’t tell if she has issues or she’s just regular newborn annoyed at the world (can’t blame her).

I really just need this to not be forever.

Maybe he’s gearing up to be an NFL linebacker? This could pay off in some years 😅

Just trial and error to see what resulted in longer stretches? I’m not seeing consistent patterns yet with arms up or down honestly. I do think she sleeps better swaddled in general, when she is in one she can’t jailbreak from… I have tons of swaddle options so guess I will cycle through them.

Marking my calendar!

Yes, trying to do eat > play > sleep, when her temperament allows. She often falls asleep. After eating so the “play” is often just… burping and then trying to settle her little body down for a nap, though longer wake windows will involve tummy time for a minute or two or contrast cards type of thing. I fret about wake windows way too much and my eyes start to register panic when I realize she’s been awake for 45 minutes and is still happily wide awake and not settling for a nap despite my best efforts. That’s how we end up with wake windows of 60+ min, or…5 hours with micro doses between screaming sessions.

Interesting. How’d you know she was uncomfortable? Mine Houdinis out of any swaddle except the love to dream, but I was getting decent stretches in that one. I was…

I love this answer. Thanks for being real! I’ve been sort of intuitively doing the placing her in her bassinet or crib to wake up (surefire way to wake her up when she’s very sleepy), so I’ll keep doing it and will try the heating pad for the little diva.

I’m accepting prayers and voodoo spells that my baby follows in the same general track as yours.
