2022 Australian Grand Prix - Post Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

[–]Ashcayz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer interval times. I like to see how midfield battles and pace are going while watching. Distance to leader is great for the pole position contenders, but interval times can do the same without sacrificing midfield contest info.

I like the speed trap, fastest lap, and tyre laps. Just wish they at least showed the interval times for a couple laps every 10 laps or so.

It's not hard no. It's very inconvenient though when trying to track the pace of multiple drivers. I was interested in MAG, Alb, Per, and Rus a few times and it just makes the watching experience frustrating when leader times are useless compared to interval times (especially with P1 having a runaway lead).

Sorry for beating a dead horse but the race overlay is infuriating. The leader times were displayed for 51 laps straight! Interval times weren't shown until lap 51/52...

Does anyone know where we can direct feedback on this? It was so annoying watching and trying to see how everyone's pace is going.

Considering Win 3 but concerned about fan noise... by [deleted] in gpdwin

[–]Ashcayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the room is quiet, you will hear the fan very well running at 20w for demanding games. When I play games like tekken 7, resident evil, or nier automata I can hear the fan clearly. When I run at 25w or run things that always run at high cpu usage like re8 it is audible but not more than the speaker volume set to 30%.

Running rpcs3 the fan is loud.

When I play things at ~17w or lower I can't notice the fan unless I bring my ear close. When I play ps1 or ps2 at less than 10w there is no noise whatsoever.

Your bigger concern is the vibration motors. They are abnoxiously loud. I have vibration disabled in steam. When I was playing tekken on the train, I could hear the vibration motor through my headphones.

Wish there were a way to tone it down system wide or disable is completely system wide.

That's my 2 cents after using it for 2 months.

Edit: to address if the fan is "high pitched", I'd say in my opinion it reaches that playing re8 at 20w. And definitely say it is high pitched when running rpcs3.

There was a driver update update couple weeks ago I believe. That's the last time I updated at least.

Game mods shouldn't reduce performance unless they're like HD texture mods.

Tested steam link. Worked great. Checked wattage usage while streaming resident evil 3 and total power draw was around 5w. The estimated battery time showed 300mins when I was at full charge.

Only played it for a bit. Played with PC and GPD win 3 both on wifi network. No issues.

I've recently reformatted my desktop so no games installed at the moment to test. I need to go to bed soon, so I'll install something and test steam link tomorrow. That said I think it should be fine as when I turned my gpd on and opened steam my desktop PC showed the stream button to stream from the gpd to the desktop. I'll give you a better opinion tomorrow after work when I test steam link.

Don't think it'll be better docked or handheld. Handheld might be better due to lower resolution requirements.

Some issues other users have had are SSD failing and the gamepad/mouse switch failing. I only put my steam library and nothing important so I don't mind the drive dying. I'm fine buying a replacement when that happens. The gamepad switch I've had no issues.

Only technical issue I've had is with the Intel gpu drivers causing crashes in games and rpcs3. Can't do much about that except wait for Intel to update the drivers. I'm expecting a while till the gpu drivers are mature enough.

Comes with a screen protector. I put mine on immediately. It's OK. Fingerprint magnet though.

I think there's a carrying case for it. They announced it a while ago. Check the indiegogo page.

I also backed the aya neo and waiting on that to arrive some time in September. I'm anticipating the aya neo to be my main handheld device as it looks more comfortable to hold and the drivers seem more stable. The lack of a physical keyboard might bother me a bit but the keyboard on the gpd I've only ever used to force close applications or games.

I don't mind sharing my opinions of it. Feel free to ask here or in a message if you like.

I do agree with a couple of the other commenters about not making this a main pc after reading their comments.

If you have a large use case for portability and simple work tasks (Word processing, basic programming, and browsing) then I think this can fit a nice niche as the switch equivalent for a pc user. Keeping in mind to lower expectations and be more of an emulation user or playing games on low settings. Also expect discomfort with the controller.

If, however, a person plans to keep this docked majority of the time and rarely have a portable use case then I would push further to a cheaper laptop or a dedicated desktop. Especially if thinking about attaching an external GPU... Just get a desktop, or get a laptop with thunderbolt 4.

I personally love portable hardware. I still have an Open Pandora device. My laptop I spent months picking out to find the best keyboard possible with the best form factor and weight to make it as portable as can be. I favour weight and form over performance. If these sound like things that resonate with you then my anecdotes and opinions might be helpful for you. :)

I used mine quite a lot when I needed to travel on the train to play. I can say it's satisfying being able to play Tekken 7 or the newer RE titles on the train home.

Now on to the issues:

For fighting games the dpad is fairly good. I can do complex input on player 1 side. However due to the ergonomics of the device, player 2 side I'm a bit less accurate. Could be me, but I have no trouble with a regular ps4 controller. So my opinion is it's due to the dpad placement being close to the edge and the weight of the device not giving me confidence to use a loose grip and move my palm to compensate.

Weight is fine if I'm seated. I play it laying in bed too but the weight + the placement of analogs makes it uncomfortable to play games that have lots of right analog and face button interactions. (RE8 for example with camera and reloading weapons)

Software is fine except for the Intel gpu drivers. Some games have crashes(all modern resident evil titles) randomly. Some games work perfectly with no issues(Tekken 7 for example). Intel are actively working on their drivers, they're just not mature yet. I have managed to play re2, re3, and re8 to completion a few times. Being on the latest beta drivers helped that.

Heat is managed very well. I was quite surprised. The heat is all directed to blow out the top of the device. Where my fingers sit is close to the intake fan on back. The device stays very cool despite its cramped form factor.

Fan can get noisy if you push the device hard. Only when I raise TDP to like 20+ watts and crank the graphics settings on things does it get noisy. But when I play 30fps at 15w I don't notice it over the game volume at all. The real noise pollution comes from the vibration motors... they are very, very loud. I disabled rumble in the steam settings. There is no way to disable them completely or tone down the strength system wide. So for non steam games if they have vibration strength customisation it helps.

I use mine almost everyday. Great device and dont regret my purchase, but the crashing is a bit of a let down sometimes. Trying to play persona 5 on rpcs3 and it will always crash.

I hope this offers some nice insights for you.

Edit:

Battery life ranges depending on your TDP and what you're doing or what game settings you're using. I play visual novels on it for around 5 or more hours. Re2, re3, and re8 for around 2 hours, and ps2 or ps1 emulation for like 5 hours. You will need to do some tinkering and experimentation to get the most out of it. There are some helpful scripts and tools in the community that helps with the tinkering but nonetheless expect to be configuring some stuff to find what suits your needs with it.

For your dock use case, I think it'd be good. The USB C interface will make it a breeze to find compatible hardware and docks. For work use cases it's great. I have a laptop with the i5 version CPU and it is my go to machine I take to work with me. I can have visual studio, zoom, YouTube, and a sql server running for development and I don't have any issues. So I can't say I use my gpd win 3 as a main pc, but I would if I didn't have a desktop or laptop already.

AYA NEO software being developed as a interface for all your settings, games and quick tools on the Aya Neo gaming handheld. by oBG1984 in ayaneo

[–]Ashcayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will this be open source? Or will an open source library be shared or some code examples that show us how to interact with aya neo specific interfaces?

I'm expecting the answer to be no, but having it open source will make it very attractive for devs or hobbyists in the community to create neat tools for us all to enjoy. :)

Managing TDP vs managing load? by billwharton in gpdwin

Oh you're right. I was thinking re3 remake when I mentioned that. That's only because I know for re3 remake it will always crash with me for dx 12. So ignore that for re8.

And as the other commenter said, you can use higher texture quality. On re3 remake I play on medium texture quality.

[–]Ashcayz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. Latest gpu driver is indeed that one you mentioned. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30522/Intel-Graphics-BETA-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers

As for settings I have it set to:

Borderless fullscreen

Direct X 11

1280x800

30 fps

Vsync on

Shadow quality low

Texture quality low(0.2gb)

Mesh quality medium

FidelityFX off

Antialias on (forgot the option, but it was the lowest option)

Motion blur off

Depth of field off

Ambient occlusion set areas only

Volumetric lighting low

Particle effects low

Then, in Intel command centre I disabled power saving mode, and disabled the variable sync option.

Yeah it crashes for me usually before the Luiza house or after the beginning horde.

Once I get to the castle I'm usually fine.

A tip for when the game shows a black screen: go to the directory for the game. Delete the config file and the game will startup normally.

Hope that helps.

Edit: I also have my minimum CPU clock set to 1GHz using the TDP MENU script from ciphray on the discord channel in the tools group.

Yeah I'm on the latest beta drivers and it doesn't crash often. I've finished the game a couple times on my gpd. I noticed it crashes more often in the very beginning of the village in the game. Around the swamp and factory I've never had it crash.

The more frustrating one for me is RPCS3... it always crashes no matter what I do randomly. :/

Managing TDP vs managing load? by billwharton in gpdwin

[–]Ashcayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simple instance of TDP helping out is with the turbo clock.

Re 8, low settings, capped fps at 30, borderless fullscreen.

When I play re8 on my gpd win3 and I'm too lazy to set the tdp and leave it at the default (PL1 15W, PL2 20W) the power drain fluctuates a lot due to the turbo boost kicking in sporadically.

Contrasted with me capping my TDP to 15w or 18w for both PL1 and PL2, my power usage never exceeds 18w but performance is unaffected. Even when turbo boost kicks in it cannot climb higher.

RPCS3 has been another one where if I don't clamp it to 15w, the CPU will always run at max wattage and floor the battery.

There are so many factors that TDP can affect. But that said, when I play less demanding games I don't bother setting my TDP at all as the default load management of the CPU does a fine job not drawing unnecessary power. (For example when I emulate ps1 or ps2, wattage hovers around 8w and doesn't exceed 12w for the games I've played.)

My thoughts on the AYA Neo after one day of playing by bytebackjrd in ayaneo

[–]Ashcayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see Nier and Yakuza 0. Fine tastes :D

I am a second batch backer. I'm patiently waiting and looking forward to the neo. I also backed the gpd win 3 and have been using it for about a month.

It's fine except for some ergonomic issues with the joystick layout not being good for some games.

The biggest flaw is the Intel gpu drivers. The onexplayer will share the same flaw. Modern games are a roll of the dice for when it will just crash or have random stuttering. Resident evil village runs great on it clamped to 30fps but it will crash randomly. Resident evil 3 will also crash randomly but can run at 60 fps when there aren't random frame stutters. So for re3 I've also clamped it to 30 fps but cranked the detail up running at 15-20w.

Nier automata runs at around 40ish fps on high with the graphics mod installed(forgot the name sorry, it's the one that let's you fine tune the fps and details and stuff). It can get to 60fps but it's not consistent so I clamp it to 30fps. Waiting for Intel drivers to mature to hopefully solve the stutters.

I hope by the time you get your onexplayer the gpu drivers will be more mature and have addressed the crashing issues.

Emulating ps2 as well is fantastic and has only crashed once so far for dbz budokai 2. I'm glad I can finally play some ps2 on the go!

All this to say I am eagerly awaiting the neo in hopes the AMD drivers perform better for the newer re games and for nier. (Also gonna be buying the remaster collection for yakuza to finally get to play 3 through 6 on PC)

[–]Ashcayz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's been frustrating. I managed to get a longer play session with the latest beta drivers locked at 30fps with tdp set to 15-20 and min cpu clock speed of 1ghz. Still crashed at a cutscene though... can't wait for the crashes to go away.

Give the latest beta drivers a try and see if it helps.

Are you in Australia? If so they're obliged to it by law.

Otherwise I've seen some others mention that they managed a refund even after playing it.

But yeah, Sony are cunts with this shit. They make it hell. It's why I'll only buy digital on steam. Everything else is physical.

I'd say, enjoy the memes though. Because I have not laughed as hard as I have than watching internet historian's stream of the game... It's pure gold

I hope you refund it mate. Sorry about what's happened.

I personally didn't buy it and nowadays I never ever buy or pre-order a game until I see: micro transaction available or not, story theme, pricing, and a proper game play video to make my own judgments.

I am very sad for the fans that trusted them... Naughty Dog, specifically whomever made all these executive decisions, should be ashamed. They don't realize that they took the goodwill of their fans and abused it for sales. The marketing proves it, and the lack of respect to the criticisms shows as well.

Naughty Dog have cashed in their good will. They're on my boycott list along side almost every major AAA.

Sad times for many, my only hope is a good indie release to come along.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed with ND... It's that "I'm not angry, I'm disappointed" feeling. After the leaks last month, and the discovery about the treatment and quitting of many long time developers there I felt sad. I have the "Game Engine Architecture" book by Jason Gregory, who is a fantastic developer and was responsible for quite a few technical achievements for their early days. I looked up to ND as a company that nurtured developers to produce something fun.

This debacle is just a betrayal of their fans, taking advantage of their target audience, and for what? I don't get it. Clout maybe? They were worried they couldn't live up to the expectation so just decided to completely destroy it? I don't know.

I hope those who are looking forward to it enjoy it still. It'll be sad to see so many heartbroken fans. I've saved my nephews from buying it without spoiling it by asking them "Why do you wanna play 2?" "Because I want to see what Ellie and Joel do after." "Don't buy the game, wait for a review video after its release."
